Nothing like a 3 hour return trip to see one quarter! Still managed to see like 8 or 9 goals!!

Gawn is awesome at vfl now. Good to see Toump running around for Casey too. Help him get used to the bigger bodies without the breakneck speed of afl.

The run at VFL level for Gawn has been extremely beneficial IMO. Was the right time to give him a rest as his last 2 weeks had been very quiet but to hear that he has gone back and played really well in tough conditions is a real positive.

And this is actually the normal way of things. Nobody really locks down a senior spot without a bit of bouncing back and forth.

The great thing about this for Gawn is that he is a hard worker and a competitor. He has the right attitude such that from here on, everytime he goes back to VFL it will probably get easier and easier for him; and everytime he gets called up to the seniors he'll have a better idea of what to expect and a bit more confidence.

Spot on. From what I can gather he kicked at least 3 goals today and had an impact which is fantastic and all we can ask of him. Fitzy deserved his spot this week but it's nice that we have a couple of young talls in good form putting pressure on each other for a spot.

Interested to hear how Toumpas, Taggert and Blease went today amongst others.

You got to see a melbourne game in 30 minutes, value for time in any case.

Third.

Long bow to draw though with the effort levels though. Plenty of easy opposition at VFL level as well.

Yeah, perhaps. But our bottom end list players are still putting in strong efforts against the VFL sides of strong AFL lists like Geelong that shows the effort difference. I think anyway. I'm just glad that at least some of the players on our list are getting to experience what it's like to win regularly, especially the young blokes.

Gawnster kicked 4 I think, Taggert 3 - I'm interested to hear how Blease and Toumpas went in conditions that wouldn't have favored them.

Well if a man mountain like Gawn can kick 4 in those conditions you would hope the others could do alright as well.

This is what I notice about Gawn. He isn't above doing the hard team things, the one percenters. The problem for him is that he doesn't have the AFL level battle hardened body so he runs out of puff quickly. A bit of further experience with regular short stints in the seniors and continued development at Casey and I think we'll continue to see very rapid improvement.

I hope Toumpas is left at Casey for another 3 or 4 weeks to really build up a head of steam before seniors consideration where hopefully he will grow to become clearly a cut above VFL level rather than just being selected and dropped yo-yo style. It will be difficult transitioning into the AFL for him given where Melbourne is at the moment but at least if he has some form and confidence in the VFL, if he is dropped from the seniors again he has that belief at VFL level to fall back on.

Blease named 2nd best on, good to hear - Taggert and Gawn also made the bests.

Good positives there. Puts Blease and Gawn in the frame again for senior selection, while I'd like to see Taggert back up this performance over the next few weeks for a chance to be in the mix for the seniors after the bye.

Personally I would like to see blease given the same treatment. Make him play several good games in a row before he is called up. At the moment I don't think he works hard enough in the seniors. Making him earn his spot a bit more may make him value his position in the team more.

Good to hear re: Taggert and Blease, you'd like to think now that posters would refrain on calling for Taggert to debut next week given that's probably the first or second time he's been named in the bests.

You would LIKE to think that but just wait till the changes thread starts after the Hawks game and everyone has him in their ins! Regular as clockwork!

Taggert has to play next week... No question. Gawn and Blease too.

;)

Cowboy, I am excited about Rory. If he gets a good run at it and a pre-season under his belt, he'd be a walk up start for round one next year.

He has certainly shown he has the ability to be a very handy player. I remember watching him in a Casey game just before he got injured absolutely tearing it up. Like you say, if he can string some good games together, get a taste of AFL and then have an injury free pre-season then he would certainly be around the mark of the senior team from Round 1!

It's not all doom and gloom at the minute. You get out to Sandy today and you get to have a look at the likes of Toumpas, Hogan, Taggert, Blease, Gawn. There are some good kids on the list. As Neeld likes to say we need to get 50 to 100 games into as soon as possible.

True. And we do have potential midfielders on the list like Viney, Toumpas, Blease, Taggert, Kent... they just need time and experience to get to where we want them to be. The problem is that we don't have anything of real quality outside of N. Jones and to a lesser extent Sylvia to keep us afloat while we wait.

Taggert has all the attributes; skill, hardness, speed - just needs to get his fitness up after his injury troubles and get his defensive impact up.

This is hurting us. How we fix it, I don't know.

For the time being we just need to get as many of them in there as possible and see if we can get a very good midfielder in the trade period with another mature age recruit like Matt Jones to support them while they come through. It's all we can do I think. Although in the second half of the year I would love to see Toumpas, Viney, Blease and even a Taggert get a real crack at it. The season is over so there isn't a great deal to lose by getting games into them.

I hate looking back. I think that's half our problem. We keep looking back trying to allocate blame. But how have we allowed our midfield to get to the state it is? Todd Viney, Tim Harrington and Jason Taylor will earn their money over the next twelve months.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more mate.

Dayle Garlett kicked 6 in the WAFL today. We desperately need a crumber. Could he be the man?

It may sound harsh but I'd like to see Bleasy back it up too. Nothing like coming into the seniors full of confidence for a young guy, and nothing breeds confidence better than consistently playing well in a side that's winning games.
