There is a bit in the last he catches the guy with his speed but you just knew he wouldn't stick the tackle. Not sure how Smartt went earlier on but crunched a guy with a brutal tackle.

Tsatas excellent, not sure how anyone could say that was a bad game, it’s potentially the most impactful territory game he’s ever played for us

Hobbs meh, good for VFL but should be braining it at that level, looks very short on confidence

Shiel very good linking and hitting the scoreboard more outside impact

Gerreyn quiet and then ended the game in a sling, shoulder got pulled back awkwardly in a marking contest

Menzie good but nothing to write home about, wouldn’t expect he’d push for selection off the back of it

ADJ quietest game in a while, just couldn’t get in

Unwin did some nice, impactful things but quiet on the whole

Smartt quiet but really good moments where he shows good power to make and break tackles and crack in hard

McMahon standard, best key forward on the ground

Nothing out of the VFL contingent apart from O’Neill who played back, Hately, Eckersley and Monteith who was dominant for 3 quarters then cramped badly late.

Sweid played exclusively forward and was quiet, would have liked to see him have a run around the ball.

As weak at the contest as any player I’ve seen on an Essendon list.
He’s some how elite at, not being at the contest either and sprinting in late having 0 impact on the passage of play. It could be off the screen work rate I don’t know but the kid looks hopeless unfortunately. Smartts moments looked like afl impact worthy moments

Sweids first possession was in the back pocket

Tsatas should be “braining it” at this level but doesn’t. Has moments but not consistent enough. Agree that his territory game was an improvement on recent weeks

Hobbs plays to the level he is in.

Thought Hoare was best on sans the turnover that tipped the tide in Casey favour.

Of the VFL guys, Solomon McKay intrigues me as a small defender, just does the basics well. Reason he’s picked every week

Will be interesting how Smartt goes at the top level and will probably get a chance sooner than later. Doesn't mind physicality, smashed a guy in the third QTR who didn't see him coming. Also will kick most chances he gets 30m directly in front and will kick some half chances. Our forward entries the thing that won't help though. In any case I suspect he will be an upgrade on Menzie, ADJ, Gresham.

I suspect that since he did his shoulder he has basically lost what physical game he had. He was never that bas at under 18 level. Not a beast but he made run down tackles. Now as you say he just sprints in and the basically escorts them hoping they make a mistake. Also dodges front on contact most of the time.

Sweid played exclusively forward, he may have got up the ground a little bit, but he didn’t play any midfield.

Tsatas is braining it presently. We just watched it.

Hoare did as much good as he did bad, missed a 30 metre target by 30 metres, let Jefferson and Hardie go up to mark uncontested, didn’t spoil and left the ball to soft drop multiple times. I like him but it was not his best game.

Solly McKay really limited player. Good honest tryer but not at the level I don’t think.

Having said that, it is a difficult situation. 6 weeks ago the VFL backline would have been Hayes, Johnson, Clarke, Laverde, Nguyen and Nyko with Hoare, now they’re all either playing AFL or injured.

I say this without a hint of sarcasm, appreciation of the irony or recognition of our history in this regard:

draft Monteath to see if he can be developed into an inside mid.

As impressive as his influence on that game was, you would not think that an AFL side would allow a ruckman that amount of leeway to follow. But, he's shown maybe 4 or 5 of the 6 or 7 qualities that you'd want to be possessed by what is probably now the single first touch/hardball specialists that most sides allow to hunt inside ball (regardless of speed and 2-way work rate/capacity).

The 2 to 3 unknowns are what makes or breaks him as a midfielder. Even being the ruckman at a stoppage is still miles from being the player whose job it is to take the first possession. But, and unlike flankers, the physical requirements and 360 degree nature of play at a stoppage are already part of his job description. And he quite clearly already understands the attacking running patterns of a midfielder.

He's got an impressive combination of size, athleticism and innate footballing ability (which could not have been faked). Someone will surely have a go and turning that into something.

197cm - unless a massive leap won't be AFL ruck except pinch hitting but at that height could be a Kouta sized midfielder indeed. If the club thinks he could be something special could be listed with the "hamstring awareness" injury known only to keep guys out for months at Essendon, until draft time 😉

Kouta sets the standard way too high. Might as well be Danger.

I'm thinking of it more like drafting Ned Long, Hustwaite or George Stevens a few years in. You've got an imperfect player who is an absolute meat axe and who has the physical capability to dominate the hardball.

In my view you only really have the room to play 1 of these one-paced stoppage specialists which is why you want that player to be the most physically dominant player possible. I'm not saying Monteath is a stoppage specialist just that I'd try to turn him into one because I think he's got the capability. If he's more than that, that's great.

Could he also play CHF with Caddy doing the tall half forward role. Also known as the Gary Lyon role

Yeah, sure.

While he is a tall player, I think forward is probably a more complicated transition than a role inside. It's nothing new for ruckman to struggle playing forward. He also doesn't necessarily have a competitive advantage standing at CHF. We have 3 defenders who are taller than him (and about as athletic) and most clubs are in a similar situation.

He could just end up as one of the outlier short ruckman but that's not my thing. There is almost no value in possession accumulation by a ruckman.
