Stengle next week:
Better that than this....

Will Smith Slap GIF by Xavier Degraux

I think people always focus too much on a player's weaknesses like with George and his speed.

Guys like GHS and Constable failed because they had no massive strengths not because they had some weaknesses.

The biggest positive for George from the other night was that his weapons of contested ball and smart ball use stood up massively at AFL level. If he's truly elite at those things at AFL level his weaknesses won't hold him back.

Posted a video earlier in this thread. They’re hilarious.

They’re definitely truly friends.
Having played team sports from more than a few decades, I've become a student of teammate dynamics. My favorite team ever was a collection of good guys, a weird assortment of expats and a couple locals. Not DHs. Almost as an afterthought we also dominated for a few seasons until some got transferred to other countries. It's an enormous buzz for an athlete to have first, the chemistry. And then getting rewarded is truly just the icing. :thumbsu:

Gazza Greatness: your comment only implies to me that you cannot see past your own opinion and will revert to immature personal attacks if someone disagrees with you. George Stevens is an honest battler who has had one good game. If you want to make a ridiculous claim that he is “the best young contested mid that we have recruited to the club in years” then go ahead. I am not here to stop you from looking silly.

Hinkley29: the proof of the pudding is in the eating and I've seen nothing from you that suggests that you have the foresight when picking out potential top line players when they are young and before they break out and your negative comments towards George Stevens kinda supports that thought, hence my writings. However, if I'm wrong and indeed you have forecasted many great players when young and before they breakout then please inform me and I'll apologise. As for me, I had SDK as my avatar before his breakout, I had Ollie Dempsey as my avatar before his breakout, I had my COS as my avatar earlier this year before his breakout (and I would have had Toby Conway too but he keeps getting injured but also Lawson Humphries) and I've explained 'in detail' to all and sundry on Geelong BigFooty as to why each and everyone of these players were going to be top line players way before they played games for our great club that would eventually show their true potential.

And I've been able to do this for years, even all the back to Corey Enright and company. There are just some people in life that are better at doing certain things than others (refer Wellsey), so it's no knock on any one person, mind you I can be a complete dumb-arse in other areas. And by the way stop with this personal attack crap, I'm just calling you out for what you write, however if in time I'm proven to be wrong, then I'll humbly apologise, although I'd expect you to do the same if you are proven to be off the mark but my track record suggests I'm 85 to 90% more likely to be right than wrong and if so, George Stevens will end up the best contested inside mid we have recruited into the club 'in years'.

PS - Hinkley29: I'm not here to be your enemy so please don't interpret that way. We both have a passionate love for this wonderful and amazing club, therefore we have much in common and I'd like to think in time whoever is proven to be correct about George that the other doesn't take out some personal vendetta against the other cos I'm simply not that type of person. Sure we can play hard at the ball on occasions (and with George I have a very big opinion and appreciation of him and his future football capabilities) but when we walk off the ground we have a beer, shake hands and have respect for the other, the same as what you and I should do, best regards Richard.... and GO CATS !!!

I thought it was clearly his best game of the season

I know there's those who'll remind us of the opposition, but sometimes you need a game like Saturday, even if it's against a lower standard of opponent to kick start things
Zuthrie had a bit of a quiet/lower impact patch but he's been steadily building for about a weeks now. Back to being in our best 6 or so players most weeks, and I think I had him 2nd BOG on the weekend.

I suspected Holmes and Cameron would pop up where they didn't in our board's MVP voting.

Max was a bit of a turnover machine (10 for the game) but his other 26 disposals were still pretty high impact.

Cameron would've kicked 8 on a day his goal kicking radar was on.

Watched first crack for the first time in a few weeks and found it amusing that they spent so much time on Coll, Carlton etc that by the time they got to us they did a quick Tom Atkins appreciation and moved on quickly as they were almost out of time.

Now Atkins 100% deserves his kudos but to not even mention Stevens excellent debut or really the game at all was stupid.

If George backs it up with another performance like that against GWS where more eyes will be on our game then you can bet they'll have no choice but to talk about him.
He has massive Josh P Kennedy vibes, a big bodied mid who can get over the ball, control the immediate space around him and then quick dish it out to receivers. Can play defensive mid and lay crunching tackles too.

The same criticsms were there for many similar blokes. "Too Slow" with pace, doesn't have much "flair"

If you can go in and win a footy and get it out to your receivers (Smith and Holmes) then nothing else matters.
That is still a valuable trait when you combine it with a nice booming kick. He can hit his targets without bombing the ball.

Reckon we've really got something here with Georgey boy.

Unpopular opinion: Dempsey is a big talent, but very, very vanilla.

Needs to go when he has to go. Doesn't always do that. He is clearly a very good player and when on is one of our best, but needs to be more physical when the time comes.

"Vanilla" is not a word i would use for Dempsey in any sense? LOL

He is absolutely an "X-Factor" player.

Floats around the ground, jumps out of his boots, kicks freakish goals.
Nothing about that screams vanilla unless you were refering to his milky white skin lol

I think we need Stevens against Green and Callaghan.

It's difficult to find a sub. Mullin, if he doesn't have a tagging job? Bowes played pretty well so I'd be trying to let him build consistency.

IN: Smith, Stengle

OUT: Duncan, OHenry

Smith straight into first receiver mid, Stengle straight into the forward pocket.
Brad Close to the forward swap off the bench, Bowes to sub as a utility to come on wherever we need him to be.

Seems like not much else changes unless there are injuries (knock on wood there's none) and we roll into "eNgIe" stadium and give them a return serve.
We surely can't kick as shit as we did last time we played them right?

Where did I say it was impossible? I said he has his work cut out for him. So did Lawson. 3 strong games probably gets it done for Stevens too.

Never said you did

Just simply sharing that Humphries got his nomination in his 3rd game is all - best chance for George to be nominated may be too play another couple of games and force his name into the conversation

17 touches, 1 goal in a loss.
21 touches, 1 goal, 14 score involvements and 8 clearances as a DEBUTANT in a win...

AFL is a bit of a joke.

Meh George will get his if he keeps playing like this, it's up to him to grab it.
The ball is in his court now so to speak, hold your spot for good kid!

Ah right. Yep that makes sense. It's possible to get nominated with late season debuts, but you need to knock it out of the park a few games in a row like Humphries did. I agree with that. Hopefully there's not too many "Kako's" they have lined up for season reward nominations.

I gave Cameron 2, but it was as much for the work up the ground that he was doing especially in the first half as well as for the unselfish give off to OH. Wasn't just stationed in the f50. Gave us a lot of drive from half back too. If he'd kicked straight it would have been a complete performance.

Nah. Dudes a freak who also plays a disciplined game. Does the team thing every time, Runs, will get mark of the year eventually, has kicked multiple goals this year booting it out of the air.

Very impressed by J Martins kicking. While I doubt he plays 22 games a season I love him rolling off half back and combining with Humphries and Zuthrie it gives us truly elite disposal out of defence.
