Can we just pump the brakes on Conway a little?

I thought he played well for a second-game ruckman, but let's keep it in perspective - he kept Meek honest and had a few good moments, but Meek did win the ruck battle overall... and he's Lloyd Meek, not Sean Darcy, Max Gawn, Tim English or Jarrod Witts.

For my mind, he did enough to keep his spot, and has a really good set of hands, but there's a fair way to go as well.

This board does this all the time - wanting a much-hyped young player to succeed so badly that an ok performance must be talked up as excellent. He was decent, and that's more than enough at this early stage in his career.
You must not be around here often. If anything it's the opposite.

Bruhn was written off before he even pulled on our jumper. Clark was called a bust in his first VFL game. Holmes was heavily criticised in his debut year, and Knevitt's already been written off by many.

Henry's somehow on the verge of missing out on the side in the eyes of many on here, and the Dempsey hype was only legitimised beyond doubt two weeks ago.

SDK's been called a soft pretty boy on many occasions, with his hair being the focus on many occasions.

Pretty sure 50% of the activity on this board over the last two weeks has been about why Mullin isn't ready, and shouldn't play until next year.

I'm not pulling these out of my arse either...you can go back and check for all these posts. The Jhye Clark thread is a ripper.

We're guilty of a lot of things on this board...but over-hyping our youngsters isn't one of them.

Would you call his Adelaide game amazing?

Anyway, you did say he's been in "ripping" form this season, and the first game is literally 33% of that entire sample size. My point wasn't exactly OTT.

14 touches, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 1.1 goal, 2 goal assists, 8 score involvements.

go clutch at straws somewhere else.

Conway played a better game than Stanley has for 12 months. He had a great game and gonna be very very good
A great game? We did lose the ruck in the finish, but he put in a valiant effort.

No argument from me that Stanley has absolutely lost a yard or six since 2022. It was a nice change to see a ruckman taking a few good clunks.

I like the signs, but let's not over-egg it. We set people up for failure by our own unrealistic standards here.

I thought he was pretty good tbh - not that Mabior Chol and Mitch Lewis are the last word as tall forwards.
His touch in the last quarter was excellent.

He's a bit of a victim of his own high standards IMO.
You're more than welcome to think that, I don't agree but we are 3-0 and there's few things to complain about!

I disagree. I think that's the squeaky gear getting inside your head a bit; most people here are being particularly generous with younger players, and especially Clark.

Seems the new Hawks thing is to carry on after kicking a goal like you've nailed an important lead stretching goal late in a Grand Final, but you are 5+ goals down, is the new trend.
I know they play for the hawks so a "close" game IS a 5 goal loss but seriously? ******* embarrassing.

Noticed a Hawks player gave the "shoosh" symbol in the 2nd quarter - when he'd kicked a goal to get them back within 30 points.

Cracked up laughing though when a Hawks player was getting into Zach Guthrie, and Oisin Mullin wandered over and bumped him and sent him sprawling.

Parfitt looked more composed. Back to something like his better days.
Kicking still a bit rushed and up and under for mine.
I think he's found his niche as a tough-tackling in the phonebox type. We kind of miscast him early on in his career as a forward of the ball footballer.

I think next year is when we'll truly be a strong flag chance but who know what could happen in 2024?

Good to be pumping games into the young blokes in any case.

All the smalls in their forward line were doing it. Ginnivan obviously, but Bruest, Watson and Moore(underrated flopper) were going at it all game. They're all shockers at it.

Ginnivan does it to his own detriment. He'd be a better player if his first instinct was to free his arms and fire off a handpass rather than focusing solely on diving at a sideways angle, throwing his head back and raising his arm. Numerous occasions he could have dished off to a teammate and potentially set up a score. Ah well, he'll be the talk of the media all week as you could hear the narrative being set during the game so I guess that's what's most important to him.

Happy with our win. We were disappointing in patches, stunning in others. Liking the look of Bruhn, Clark, Dempsey, O Henry and Conway. Thought Parfitt was very good for the second week running and his staking his claim for a spot on what may have been his last opportunity to do so. Kolo has been good all year thus far.

Every time I see Hawthorn play I come away thinking Frost must be one of the worst players in the league, surely? Just a shocker!

Ross Lyon football is the worst type of game for small forwards.
Actually I kind of think it's worse if you're tall (because the ball comes in so slowly) - but it's usually bad for forwards in general.

That said, he was the quietest of all seven of them. Glad he had a really good one today.

I assure you, I've seen a lot more posts writing off/playing down youngsters performances or potential than I have over the top praise.

So much so that's we've got a pretty common thrase on here now "Not every youngster is Joel Selwood" - In reference to the impatience the majority seem to have with young players on this board.

Best game I've seen Clarke play
Until today wondered if he wasn't going to make it.
The rove off a Conway tap and laser pass to JC was special
Yeah, that's what I look for in players with that level of experience. You might not (in fact, unless you're Bartel/Kelly, won't) dominate games in your first year, but you have moments.

I have ALWAYS valued Parf as our best tackler. In the Covid Tigers GF when he broke his hand, our premiership hopes were also broken, not helped by GAJ's shoulder.

Bank the 4 points and move on.

Good signs from Mullin, Conway, Bruhn, Clark, Dempsey. No injuries or obvious MRP worries. SdK finally pulled the finger out.

All positives. Go Cats!

Agree with all of this. And I thought Parfitt was really good again, too. Great to see him taking his opportunity the last couple of weeks.
