I thought the umpiring and commentary around Ginnivan this game was really interesting. Prior to the final quarter, there was plenty of talk by commentators about how he is treated differently, unfairly.

The interesting part for me was how in the last part of the final quarter the commentators - confronted with a Ginnivan who kept diving, kept leaning, kept lifting his arm - completely changed their tune saying things like: 'well, I don't know what to think about it'.

The fact is, that's exactly what the umpires are faced with. And I feel for them. Players who dive put them in a difficult position: give a free where it may not be justified and give away a goal or let play go on and risk missing a free kick. I can see why they've been instructed to do the latter and I think most fans of all teams would support that approach in general: if in doubt, don't blow the whistle.

The truth is, it's hard not to be biased (how many Hawks supporters would have backed Ginnivan in prior years? I'd say it'd be close to zero). And with all honesty, I can see how we'd be pissed if this was Close or Stengle or Miers (granted, they don't duck, but admit that most of us would have a bias towards our own players). But looking at it from the umpires' point of view: this is surely the hardest game in the world to adjudicate, and players who try to milk free kicks make that job harder, and they have nobody to blame but themselves if they miss out on the occasional genuine free because of their own muddying of the waters.
Not hard for me to be unbiased Mattttty: what Ginnivan is doing is bullshit and is hurting his side as he should be laying off handballs then trying to shepherd or block. If that was ANY Geelong player I'd want him to IMMEDIATELY STOP DOING IT or be dropped...... PERIOD. He's actually a better footballer than that but at present he's just a unsuccessful cheating SOB.

Just watched the replay and gave up when I had seen Worpel and Bruhn match up 5 times in the first 3 quarters.
Was 1 possession each and nothing for the other 3.
The last quarter started even worse for you.

Had you gone with Atkins got taught a lesson by Worpel you would’ve had a case.

In other news I thought Luke Bruest got absolutely taught a football lesson by Tyson Stengle
I haven't watched the replay but I remember seeing Nash and Bruhn together a lot and Bruhn beat him handily and was a huge reason our Q1 was so strong.

He wasn't on his own there... The entire list of smalls in the Hawk fwd line seemed to have instructions almost to flop, dive and try draw frees... Particularly in the last quarter

I agree 100%. And I think I'm pretty unbiased, too. I'm most proud of our players when they play fair and win. And that's not the way Ginnivan goes about his football.

From what I watched Nash went to Bruhn after 1/4 time
First quarter he was mainly on Hustwaite and Newcombe.
Nash beat him in the second from what I witnessed but in the 3rd Bruhn burnt him many times.

What impressed me was his defensive running that some people on here questioned
You can see even in the vison shared by the club he was there to exit the back half himself or apply pressure when the hawks had the ball in there forward half

I can’t believe the AFL is apologising to the Hawks about that diving flog “treatment”

Means he'll just keep doing it ..

I don't think Sam Mitchell likes they he goes about it ..from what he said on the telly last night

Considering they are supposedly 4-5 years into a 'rebuild' (side note, what is a rebuild?) you wouldn't have noticed it yesterday.

Not even being biased, I'd take our kids over theirs everyday of the week.

Bruhn, Holmes, Conway, Henry, Clark, SDK, Dempsey, & Mullin all performing together was a delight.

The only Hawks player out there I'd be in any hurry to get to the cattery in exchange for one of those guys is Newcombe...and even he looks like he's gone of the boil a bit this year.

Huge credit to our list management team. It was only a few years ago that Charlie Constable was among our most promising, it's pretty incredible how we've turned that around so quickly.

Hard to know this early on .

But they picked wizard over Sanders ...

Nuke a good player but yeah seems abit off ..

Breaking news: Guy who started playing the sport 2 years ago doesn't look like a star in game number 8.

Love your work PO, but if there was a game to criticize Mullin this one wasn't it.

First time he's actually shown athletic traits at AFL level IMO. Played a little bit more on instinct rather than just trying to not to make a mistake, and used his speed and strength to get himself out of trouble.

Made a top 10 draft pick in Watson look silly on occasions too. Side note, looks like second coming of Paul Medhurst that bloke.

Tiny body, giant head, and about 15 of his 75kgs are in the backside. He looks like a Lego man.
That burst of speed and left foot pass early in the game had me up and about😍

Who ever plays Hawks next better be prepared for him to get 5 frees in the first half if not quarter .... Oh wait it is Coll by all means give him 10 ;)

The booos will be funny

I think CMac and McKenzie would look better in better teams

He didn't do heaps, but this was definitely his best game.

I like that he took it on a bit more. Gives me hope that he'll turn into a solid player with time. But probably agree he'd be better to play a few VFL games and try to attack.
He's been somewhat underrated as a negator in his AFL games so far, even though we all want him to break lines and set up attacks.

Someone of his experience should be getting carved up by AFL small forwards.

Agree that Worpel was BoG for both sides, I just meant Geelong and only Geelong.

Pretty sure Bruhn spent most of the second on the pine.
He did. I rewatched the match. Bruhn had 1/3 of the game on the bench, just under 1/3 on Newcombe, just under 1/3 on Nash and maybe 1/50 on Worpel (about a minute and a half).

We tried to roll Atkins (mostly), Clark (sometimes) and Parfitt (occasionally) onto Worpel. A bit of Holmes and Bowes in the last term. Worpel was great but it's hard to really complain about the collective efforts of our undermanned midfield. We made it scrappy enough that our wingmen and flankers could dominate after stoppages.
