Autopsy Cats lose to GWS by 4 points

For those lamenting the cost and don't like the idea of standing: I've been a couple of times this year as GA and got a free seat at the southern end easily.

I turned up about 40-50 minutes early to guarantee a good seat. But at the bounce of the ball there are still plenty of good spare seats.

Take a bread roll or box of snacks, sneak in a bit of my own booze.

If money is a factor there are options.

The club need to do something to draw people in droves, as whingeing about not getting enough home games per year doesn't add up when you're getting sub 30k people there with a capacity of 40k is it, or more now?
Isn't it officially just under 40k?

Take away standing and seat holders that for whatever reason don't turn up to a particular game (not sure if we have a buy back scheme?)

Then 35k is still a pretty decent turn out on KP games

Must admit it felt less than 28k last Sunday

It is about 40K.

I'm going to give the 28K vs GWS a pass for now - but a big watch on the rest of the year. Last year we regularly got around 28-32. And that is historically high. Just would be good to give that a nudge up to 34-36.

Im not sure what the internet is like now but when I went in round 1, I basically couldn’t use my phone for the entire time I was in the ground. Just no reception.
It’s 2025 ffs.
Can’t use cash (although this is probably the same for all stadiums and venues as it’s becoming more frequent)

It’s incredibly annoying. Haven’t been back since.

It's the first I noticed it this season, with the "cow in the paddock" as Hocking refers to it being located outside St Mary's oval /across from the Bob Davis Gate

I'm in the Players Stand and didn't lose phone/internet coverage at any stage during the day - I was there for both the VFL & AFL. Hopefully that's helped a bit for those on the Telstra network

Cashless is standard at all main sporting venues across the country - Adelaide Oval was the first to go in that direction, having trailed it during the 2016/17 cricket season and then rolled it i out across the stadium in 2017

People mention Blicavs, Stengle, etc but for me the worst was that round the corner one from Dempsey that didn't make the distance.
How is it worse? It was just as far out. Why is falling short but accurate worse than kicking long enough but inaccurate. I dont get the logic of how one is worse than the other?

Unless my memory is off Blicavs and stengle also missed two shots. Dempsey didnt.

Dempsey's shot that fall short was from 20m out - definitely a lot closer to goal than either of Blicavs missed shots

What also makes the Dempsey miss more frustrating was no one on the goal line other than a GWS player

Here's where our shots on goal were taken over the first 3 quarters:

From that distance, it is easier to take "making the distance" out of the equation by making solid contact. I'm not convinced that going gentle significantly increases your accuracy, so why not take distance out of the equation?

I'm talking about people who live in Geelong and surrounding.

They must make up a decent chunk of the membership base.
Less than 1/3 in some seasons. 32 % of 2024 memberships were from local Geelong

Dempsey effort was poor for a league footballer
Poor for an amateur footballer even

Drop punts!!!

I'm happy with them going around the corner, just do it properly.

I would actually like to see some data on drop punt vs round the corner. I suspect the round the corner kick gets more goals, but it would also get more "no score, what the **** is that kick?" as well.

Yeah plenty fall short or hit the belly and go completely wide

Regardless of the kick there is no excuse for not reaching 20m
Pros should nail that kick on either foot.

Shows how athleticism has replaced skills

That is a very low % for having your own team in your backyard.
Need to get a breakdown of where game attendees live though. These days there are a lot of bullshit* memberships you can buy if you live far away and never really attend to go, but want to be part of the club.

*tongue in cheek, no offence to those who buy them

Yeah we have the pet memberships now.

I always used to laugh at other clubs for those.

At lease they're an add-on rather than boosting the membership tally.

It's hard to know why it won't increase. With the on field success we've had the memberships have built to 80k, yet a smallish percentage of that attend. It's quite possible that many have purchased memberships to qualify for finals tickets.

My family take the hit of a family membership @ $1400 knowing they can't go to every game, due to kids commitments, but don't have to go to the endless palava of booking GA individual games.
And to push home the disability aspect, although not many care, the Club won't handle that seating, it's a frustrating matter of going through Ticketmaster each time, and waiting for callbacks. AFL money hungry contracting, most likely.

Local Geelong means Geelong town and not Ocean Grove/Surf Coast?
I suppose if it's only greater Geelong that's not very big

Then there's probably surf coast, Bellarine and surrounds

Then Melbourne/Victoria, interstate etc

Would be an interesting breakdown because being in Melbourne I bump into random Cats fans everywhere

Need to remember that all things considered, Geelong is still small.

32% of 90000 members comes out to about one membership per 9.4 people in Greater Geelong.

Even if you assume all the rest are from Melbourne (which they aren't clearly) then that means there is one membership per 87 people in Melbourne. Factoring in interstates etc it's probably closer to 1 in 100 in Melbourne. Of course a lower percentage is expected here (geography, competition with Melbourne based teams)

But you can see how the sheer size difference between the two cities means the 32% is a "bigger" number than first meets the eye.

I noticed on Sunday there was a 2 ticket GA membership for $49 at the ticket booth

So if you were buying two tickets you'd save $5 and be counted in the membership numbers
