Saints too good at Marvel

Seen the headline before.

WE werent good enoough and a lack of effort and pressure killed this one.

41 points down on more than 1 occasion proved too much to overcome.

Some good signs from Clohesy, Clark, Neale, COS, Humphries J Henry

Holmes. Depmsey, Miers, Jezza, PFD, OH, CLose, Stengle and pretty much the rest give SFA in the first 1/2 and you cant do that in this league and expect to win.

Stewy injury hurts too.

On to next week and im off to bed.

Go Catters

Didn't deserve to win, and better we didn't.

Win and it would've papered over our unwillingness to play 4 quarters of footy.

Now they'll review and be forced to acknowledge their lethargy.

3.5 quarters of good footy in '25 so far, vs 4.5 real ordinary ones.

We have consistently struggled against St. Kilda at Marvel under Lyon. We lost to them there early in the season in a flag year.

Not to say that this season will go the same, and I doubt it will, but it is a good sign we fought back and got the game on our terms at the end, and we should be really pleased with signs shown by young players. Early in he game Knevitt and Clark were the only ones who could really hold their head high, and the efforts of COS and Clohesy were a large part of the comeback, with the former's marking being very impressive.

Sheer arrogance by CS.

When your midfield is paper thin and Smith is a late out... you know Holmes is going to be tagged.

So knowing Holmes will be tagged you send out Atkins + Knevitt to start the game in the middle with him.

Does Patrick Dangerfield not seem like a pretty decent option under these circumstances to start in the guts.

We also know Marshall will manhandle SDK as SDK is always bent over by any decent ruck.

We sent them out at a strategic disadvantage.

OWN GOAL GEELONG and Chris Scott.

Leaving at three quarter time justified. Would have been shattered to miss the win. But sub par most of the night. Tough game up in Brisbane next. Yikes

O'Sullivan . . . . is anyone else as impressed as I am?
I thought he was so good. Began to dominate the air and even had a go at goal in the dying stages. Looks the complete footballer.

I mean he looks every bit as good as what De Koning was in 2022 and that's just three games into a career.

He was great but that shot for goal was dumb. Partly because he was never going to make the distance and we needed a point to make it a one score game but also because we had free players inside. He will learn from that howler but he's going to be a really good defender. Reminds me of some early days Harry Taylor stuff (big call I know).

For how little AFL they've played all of O'Sullivan, Clohesy and Clark did well when for 3/4 of the game most of our blokes were getting thrashed.

Yep.
Stewart was a pretty significant out in the grand scheme of things. But having said that, he's going on 31 and won't be around too much longer so we have to transition the team anyways. I thought O'Connor was good too.

He is going to be a really great player for us. You could see him building confidence and getting better within game.

For anyone playing at home Caddy was subbed off in the dons game

Surprised at how many penciled this in as a win given our shit record against Saints at Marvel, and if we can’t beat that team they had out there tonight, not sure when we will.

Had the chance to win it despite playing so badly but shat the team time and time again going forward.

Lions, Dees, Crows, Hawks next 4, ooofff.

Bogey team with their loser coach does us in again. Happened enough over 20 years not to worry too much anymore.

We just don't get enough out of our 2nd tier mids, and when Holmes is tagged and Danger forward this happens.

Stewart had more influence on the game than Mullin, who needs to go back to the VFL. Play him against the premiers and we're asking to lose.

Mannagh and Baz in.

How much does not having regular games at Marvel, have an impact when we finally play our single game at the venue for the season?
Shouldn't really have any more effect than playing any other away game, or should be less due to the lesser travel demands. Not having regular games there hasn't really stopped us winning games in Adelaide or Perth.

We can’t play at marvel.

Too much panic and lack of composure at the end.

Probably the worst first half in a long time, everything we did from the first min just screamed we were off.

No more knevitt. We’re not serious if he’s in our squad.

COS and Clohesy are finds and should stay in

Damn that was a hard watch, COS and Clohesy were the only things that made it ok to watch, good effort by those boys! Please take an example of the oppositions pressure from tonight, if we had that with our talent it would be amazing. Jeremy Cameron tonight I hated the way he played or was told to play, we just needed him in the 50.
I don't begrudge sending him up around the ball. We were getting smashed at the contest and needed numbers

The ruck issue we have no solution for. There is no alternative to sdk. That is on the list management team and on the medical team who cannot get Conway ready to play. Nothing the coach can do there. That needed to be fixed in the trade period and we didn't do it.
Dangerfield I agree but that depends whether he has the tank to still do it all game (he may not).
We may be better off starting him in the mids and then fwd after half time when we hopefully have a lead up.

We’ve seen this game on many occasions.
A dominant ruck giving opposition mids first advantage at most stoppages.

How can a Ruckman have nearly 30 disposals and 33 hit outs?

I understand our formula of using undersized/flexible rucks but it’s usually a reliable reason why we lose games.

A young midfield and an undersized Ruckman is a recipe for disaster.

As many of you know, I spend most of BigFooty in Bay 13.

I created the game day thread for our match with the following description:

Hello Friends,

It's that time again. Time for a St Kilda spud to come out of the shadows of mediocrity (huge news at Seaford) to kick 4 goals against Christ Scott and his Classy Cats.

Somehow Ross The Boss has made a tactical error and Zaine Cordy will not line up for the Saints, but will it be a big enough chink in his defensive armour for the Cats to get on top?

Probably not.

After last night's umpiring debacle, will the AFL try to orchestrate an even bigger scandal? The Magic 8-ball says "It's likely".

Expect a fast game until Ross Lyon sucks the absolute life out of it to avoid being slaughtered.

Saints by 8.

Jack Higgins - 4 goals.
Saints by 7.

This game is like CLOCKWORK.

I think SDK would have taken that mark in the square towards the end if Ollie Henry had not spoilt him.
Ollie Henry has a lot of talent, but he's not the best team player.

I don't know if kids use the word these days, but back in '90s we'd have called him a "hungus" because he always look to have a ping at goal evem of giving it off is thr better option.

Ollie also, as you stated, spoils his own team mates at time by going for marks he has no right to fly for.
