Geelong has axed David Spriggs after failing to organise a post-season trade for the pacy midfielder.

The Cats also promoted Shannon Byrnes to the senior list while cutting Daniel Foster plus rookies James Allan and Jeff Smith.

Geelong had told Spriggs before the trading period that it would try to swap him to another AFL club, but did not muster enough interest at the trade table.

Spriggs made his debut in 2000 and missed only two games in his first two seasons, finishing tenth in the 2001 best and fairest.

But he missed the entire 2002 season after a bizarre pre-season knee injury suffered on a beach, and was never the same player again.

Although he did play in the qualifying final against Port Adelaide this year, he only took part in five matches.

Byrnes was promoted off the rookie list this year, playing four matches but lost his place in the team for the finals.

South Australian Foster played 17 games over 2000-02.

Meanwhile the Cats are on the lookout for three new board members after the departure of Greg Giles, Glynn Harvey and Adam Trescowthick

good to see him go.
why?
Geelong would want to make sure they still have depth through the midfield. All the good sides have 25-30 players that wold make the best 22 of other clubs. I would have like freo to have a go at spriggs, if we hadn't of picked up black and Carr.

I hope he ends up at Richmond.
If Richmond wanted him you'd guess he would have been thrown in as a free-be in the Ottens trade. Richmond are going to struggle to create enough list vacancies to use their draft picks down to pick 31 as it is. Unlikely to spend either pick 31 in the national or pick 1 in the PSD draft on him ... and we won't have any lesser picks to spend.

I dont really know that much about him. Before he did his knee I recall he was a pretty pacy 'outside' type. Kicking may have let him down a bit.
Is this about right? Might add a bit of pace to the Pies or is he not worth it?

Not if Pat Bowden's available they won't.
Spriggs is available in the national draft, Bowden probably won't. Hence Rich first pick in the PSD will most likely be irrelevant for picking Spriggs - expect him to go somewhere between 35-50 in the national draft.

Cheers
