Mullin had a few howlers, but some of his strength in the contest was quite impressive.

He really needs to improve over next ten weeks, because I can almost guarantee he is not going to be dropped, and he is currently way too accident prone for a close final.
Oisin was good. Had Reid covered and won his own ball. Had that nice run down HTB on Reid and a really important contested mark. He’s strong through the hips and just powers forward. I want them to really do a hard tag with him. They always move him, just leave him on a gun full time.

I said as much during the match. We can (just about) live with Holmes/Smith's turnovers as they are line breaking ball magnets that get the ball to our forwards regularly. Plus they are generally a 50m kick that gives us time to get back.

With Mullin those missed handballs or chip kicks between the arcs can become instant opposition goals against the better teams.

If he can shut down the opposition's best player then it's okay but otherwise the trade off isn't there.

He's a sturdy see ball get ball, who needs a chop out to clear the ball, or a very clear lead down the ground, because he can kick long and well.
He's just not that skilled or trustworthy in close, tends to get in the way. Hopefully that cumbersome work improves, but probably tagging to instruction better than we think. Plus he's doing okay with the big bod holding things up.

Last week missed an easy goal, and this week almost stuffed our forwards 10 metres out, so WTF he's doing in our forward line I don't know, needs to back out to HF a bit, even if tagging.

Feel like Scott was trying out a "**** it, we ball" game plan for the first three quarters. Really weird game to watch on TV, feel like it might have made more sense viewed at the ground.

Holmes and Smith were great. Miers fantastic as a link man. Rest of the midfield was terrible.

Maybe. But perhaps Clohesy is actually capable of playing the same defensively minded mid role but being a bit more effective with ball in hand?

I'd play Clohesy ahead of Close who has been a bit hit & miss across the season

I have no doubt that Clohesy can play a defensively minded role but would he be capable of doing so for 4 quarters - especially against the likes of an Anderson or Rowell?

We need to remember that Clohesy is still only 20, not turning 21 until September; Mullin is 25 and we can see the strength in his body & especially through his legs. Competing against Anderson who turned 24 in Feb & Rowell who turns 24 next month, think I'd be leaning towards the more mature body

Geez you guys are tough on some players. There was 14 cats that had the same amount or more turnovers as Oisin. Lots of those other players turnovers resulted in opposition goals.

I think the cats will gain more from that close game than if it was a blow out from the beginning. The eagles played well for large patches and well done to them for making it a contest. The cats really had to think their way through it carefully and to switch into different modes when needed.

It really seems that every mid/lower tier team play above themselves when playing the cats. The positive from this is that hopefully it’ll be good experience if they reach the finals.

1. Rhys Stanley - Another serviceable game. Breaking even against Flynn and Reid meant we were able to win the clearances for long periods of the game. The big mark and goal in the last quarter were very nice too.

3. Bailey Smith - Got about ten thousand touches again and will probably feature in the Brownlow votes, but I think his game was only OK. He butchered the ball a lot more than usual. Not just the little soccer kicks he does in congestion, which tonight mostly went to WC players because they were leading us to the ball, but simple kicks too.

5. Jeremy Cameron - I reckon Ginbey beat him for about 75% of the game, yet Jezza still ended up with 5. How does that happen? Four last quarter goals came because he's lethal at ground level and a good set shot, his teammates played for him (Neale's effort aaginst Ginbey and another WC defender let Jezza snaffle that one), and midfielders started looking for good options inside 50 instead of derping it around randomly.

7. Shaun Mannagh - Our best IMO. Probably the only bloke kicking inside 50 all night who actually lowered his eyes and looked for a lead. The set shot too from 45m was very nice. Just a ruler-straight drop punt through the middle, right when we needed it.

9. Max Holmes - A bit like Bailey Smith. A gajillion touches, more bounces than John Pesutto's chequebook, and nearly 900m gained, but disposal left something to be desired.

14. Connor O'Sullivan - Very high footy IQ. He's nearly always thinking ahead, and when he does get beaten it's from inexperience rather than from lack of effort. He can sometimes overcook the handballs which is nice if our defender can run on to it, but can also easily put him in a lot of trouble.

16. Sam De Koning - Very poor in the first half, making Oscar Allen (a chip scab) look like a superstar. Much, much better in the 2nd half where he attacked the footy with a lot more intent and got his disposal back to acceptable levels.

17. Lawson Humphries - Excellent game again. He's just so composed with the ball, impossible to evade when tackling, and an amazingly good kick on both feet. That kick to Neale off his left foot was magnificent.

18. Tyson Stengle - Tonight was a very welcome return to form for Stengle. Two goals, numerous assists, and generally made himself a major headache for the Eagles' defenders all night. He got the rewards he deserved, after several weeks of working very hard for little return.

22. Mitch Duncan - He may be winding down, but Duncan proves that there's no substitute for experience or class. He got more than his share of the footy and inevitably used it well. Would have been nice if he'd kicked that goal late, but he looked pretty gassed.

28. Ollie Dempsey - Three quarters of silly rubbish, and a very fine last quarter. Whatever Scott said to him must have sunk in because he stopped trying to do the fancy shmancy stuff and got the basics down solid, reserving the Harlem Globetrotter stuff for that goal out of congestion when nothing else would have worked.

30. Tom Atkins - Tackling Machine Tom was doing the usual thing again tonight. Yet another week with double-digit tackles. He's on world-record pace. I thought he got a bit out of position at times tonight though.

32. Gryan Miers - It's hard to believe he'd only kicked two goals this season before tonight, because he's been among our most dangerous forwards. Somehow he just always seems to hit a target, even if our forward is drowning in a sea of defenders. Career-high 13 marks tonight, and many of them were intercepts around the midfield.

33. Shannon Neale - Just the one goal, but I liked his ruckwork, and five tackles for a tall forward is a damn fine effort. He's also a bit quicker than you'd think a 203cm 100kg forward/ruckman has any right to be, which lets him affect a lot of contests and put pressure on a lot of defenders' kicks out of D50. That's how repeat inside-50s happen.

34. Oisin Mullin - Who was he tagging? I saw him lay an absolute beast of a tackle on Harley Reid at one point, but aside from that and a hideous handball in the 3rd quarter seemed to do nothing much. It was probably a bit of a nothing game tonight.

36. Oliver Henry - Another quiet night stats-wise, but two goals was a decent return. This week I appreciated his willingness to chase and tackle, put in a very clever half-block for Stanley's mark and goal, and try to get the ball to fall to better advantage for our crumbers in contensed mark situations. More of that please. But don't do those stupid around-the-corner kicks when you're 25m out on no real angle. Just a drop punt will do.

150- Jack Henry - We look so much more settled with him down there. He regularly gives up an inch or three on the tall forward he's minding, but his reading of the ball off the boot of the guy kicking inside 50 is second to none.

39. Zach Guthrie - Best game for quite a while, I thought. We looked pretty shaky in defence for a lot of the night, but I don't remember too many major howlers from Zuth. Seemed to push a bit up into the midfield too, which I like because he is a good kick and excellent at finding the right option.

40. Ted Clohesy - I wish Scotty would give him more game time. Tonight he came on with less than 5 minutes to go, went straight to the centre square, and got about 5 touches, a mark and a tackle in no time whatsoever.

42. Mark O'Connor - A bit quieter than his excellent last two weeks, but his cool head and sound disposal got us out of trouble numerous times. Sometimes you need your senior players to put the team on their shoulders and win the game off their own boot. Other times, all you need is for them to lead the way by not freaking out over nothing. MOC can always be relied upon to stay cool-headed.

44. Tom Stewart - I thought for the first quarter and a bit he looked somewhat out of sorts. But For most of the second half he was doing what he's done so well for so long: reading the ball perfectly and picking off anything that was there to be taken. If Jack Henry reads the ball well off the boot, Stewart reads it well of the play. If we're going to challenge in the finals, this is what we need.

45. Brad Close - Yeah... pretty forgettable night. Serious case of butter fingers. When he didn't fumble the ball he used it OK, and I liked the opportunistic goal (you don't kick across D50 when Close is lurking) but mostly the ball just wouldn't behave for him.

46. Mark Blicavs - Very quiet game by Blitz's high standards. He seemed to be minding Flynn a bit every time Flynn went forward. If so, mission accomplished because WC got little from their tall forwards, aside from Allen taking SDK to the cleaners in the first half, generally. But we look better with Blitz more involved.

Biggest legs since Josh Hunt now.

He’ll develop into a very good player but he seriously butchers it. Needs to improve his disposal (and will)

Gave up 2 goals from disposal errors. That handball to H Reid (and goal) was average
Yeah, sure, I see that but like you am not concerned about it long term at all. I'm just really seeing the good and special signs from such a young player.

We just need to look at that centre clearance he got where he had two guys trying to tackle him and he just kept driving himself forward until he could get a handball to a teammate

We've got some promising young players, and I like Clohesy's intent out there, but not sure he would have that same ability to drive through in that situation

I'm not saying he's a dud. But in a big, high pressure final I wouldn't feel that safe with Mullin as a link in the chain for an important end-to-end transition.

His raw turnover numbers aren't terrible (1 in every 6 disposals) but they are usually dinky little handballs/kicks that stand out when they miss. You need a degree of difficulty meter for turnovers and efficiency that sadly we don't have access to.

I like his contested stuff when he gets a tagging role though generally.

Hmm. That's because they were specifically told not to do it.
Baz of course was elsewhere then, but needs the memo.

Yeah that's because there's a team rule about not making mess to clean up its why they never do the gatorade spray that some teams do.
