Mullin had a few howlers, but some of his strength in the contest was quite impressive.

He really needs to improve over next ten weeks, because I can almost guarantee he is not going to be dropped, and he is currently way too accident prone for a close final.

I'm OK with him as a midfielder runner/tagger. He just cannot be playing back pocket on small forwards (thankfully someone has seen the light and put oconnor there instead).

I said as much during the match. We can (just about) live with Holmes/Smith's turnovers as they are line breaking ball magnets that get the ball to our forwards regularly. Plus they are generally a 50m kick that gives us time to get back.

With Mullin those missed handballs or chip kicks between the arcs can become instant opposition goals against the better teams.

If he can shut down the opposition's best player then it's okay but otherwise the trade off isn't there.

He has been good at some shut down jobs this year though so there is scope.

Weird game, first our guys didn't seem to really celebrate goals, in first 3Q. Were they underestimating early? And so often either kicking high over the target, or misreading the ball, running under it and missing the mark.

Also we were very friendly with Reid, everyone, even Mullin. Might have been the camera angle, but it almost looked like one of the Cats gave him a little bum tap after he missed a shot on goal. :confusedv1:
For a guy who often gets niggly with oppo... tipping the hand? :winkv1:

Maybe. But perhaps Clohesy is actually capable of playing the same defensively minded mid role but being a bit more effective with ball in hand?

Clohesy could do that job on a certain type of smaller mid as he's dogged enough but Rowell is physically too strong he would randomly him.

It's kinda crazy to think that tonight was the first time in nearly 3 years that we actually faced off against the last place team

Loved Mannagh and Close in that one. A good game from MOC. Miers also great. Stengle brilliant in patches. Dempsey disappeared then came back and impacted.

All the negatives for me just boil down to pressing the attack when it wasn't on, looks we were instructed to just try break the game on every possession in the first half. We'll learn from that.

Would like them to play that last quarter pass from Duncan on repeat as a perfect example of how to kick to forwards: soft, let the forward come at the ball. Too many hard bullets into forwards tonight.
Totally disagree. A ball coming at you, you take it on merit and judge hands out or chest mark.

For example, Stengle missed a few sitters to take a hands out approach other than a chest mark, but failed to take control because he misjudged the tracking of the ball.

He had ample space to chest mark which makes it easier, yet didn’t for perceived pressure.

There’s lots of issues through this game for us, bullet passes isn’t an issue in my book. Bombs to no one in general yes though.

Close was bloody shocking, dont know what game you were watching.

I'm not saying he's a dud. But in a big, high pressure final I wouldn't feel that safe with Mullin as a link in the chain for an important end-to-end transition.

His raw turnover numbers aren't terrible (1 in every 6 disposals) but they are usually dinky little handballs/kicks that stand out when they miss. You need a degree of difficulty meter for turnovers and efficiency that sadly we don't have access to.

I like his contested stuff when he gets a tagging role though generally.
Thankfully midfield link man will not be his role in a big final, so we are all good.

Not sure why we let Brad Scott coach the first three quarters, but good to see Chris coach for the last 👍

I think he needs to assess better - the short passes or handballs are fine when they are on but he needs to raise his eyes as well and assess longer options
That's bloody hard to do but I think that's what we expect in the long run.
