Before this devolves into a argument of semantics, let me point out that Michael Crawford uses his voice extremely well. He is very clever with his singing and knows exactly how to get the right tones (and undertones) in his voices, and from a technical point of view is nigh-perfect when it comes to singing. I'm just saying that if you gave his voice to many other really famous music theatre people, they'd never get out of it nearly what he has. It's a poor voice that's been tuned to near perfection, in much the same way Rachmaninoff would likely make the run-down out-of-tune piano at a local church club sound awesome.

I'm not sure what point there is to this.
Michael Crawford was a singer since the beginning of his career, whether it is entirely natural or not - doesn't make him much different to anyone else.

how much different is he, to say Mandy Patinkin?

lots of people work at their voice, in fact doesn't everyone in that genre?

none of which has anything to do whether Kelli Underwood is a good commentator or not.

Yeh better than Luke 'Chris Knights is a prestigious kick' Darcy.

She was good (relative), but it's hard to stay focussed on a game with a female commentating for some reason....
A bit like watching a soccer match without a Scotsman on special comments, just doesn't sound right...

But seriously, I thought she was alright.

I mean, considering the amount of commentators which outright annoy me, she was not too bad.

She's definitely better than Mick McGuane.

lol. who knows!

fwiw, I just did some checking: Crawford appeared in opera and music theatre professionally on stage and in film some 25 - 30 years before he was phantom.

I know. He did lots of music drama in his youth too. I was surprised to read that Some Mothers Do 'Ave Em was his first breakout success though, I kind of thought he'd done something major before that. My memory isn't as good as I thought.

Haha I know. I completely agree with both of those comments....

Jenny is just being sexist though. It doesn't surprise me at all. Next she will be wanting chicks getting drafted as well.

:p:eek:

God no.... NO women on the field PLEASE! Seriously the palava some of you have carried on with..... can't recognise tongue in cheek eh? Look, the bird wasn't bad - certainly not as bad as some of these blokes who have been "champion players" blah blah blah but who wouldn't know an original thought if it bit them in the arse. They just seem to regurgitate the same incorrect shit week in and week out. Cometti - who would be my favourite (since the passing of Clinton Grybas - did he ever play the game BTW? or Bruce? - ) - unfortunately, spends his week looking for witty reparte rather than researching the teams at hand.

I don't personally care WHO or WHICH SEX commentates as long as they actually KNOW something about the game and the teams competing. I think I've previously said that I'm pissed off at the likes of Walls and Sheehan who don't see it as their jobs as "experts" to actually WATCH every game so they can make INFORMED comments. Or the likes of Watson and OX who THINK they are "experts" but have a combined footy IQ lower than a blade of grass. Just because they played, and were good at it, DOESN'T mean they'll make great commentators (coaches etc.).

Can't see why women can't be footy commentators if they so choose... as long as they know their stuff. As in all aspects of our lives, they'd have to be twice as good as a bloke in any case just to get the damned job in the first place. :p;)

and this is obviously the crux of the matter.

is this really the forum for whatever underlying issues you might have or want to vent?

What part of "can't recognise tongue in cheek eh?" didn't you understand? :D That was just too easy!

IMO they should pick commentators for what they know, not who they know. Also, they need charisma and a voice that doesn't make you cringe. Murray Walker (Formula 1) was a great example. Despite his cliches such as "SPECIAL" and "CLEVER," Bruce Abernethy is IMO probably the best AFL commentator atm, especially in finals and close games.

Play nicely children and don't make me get the whip out ;)

Seriously, she knew enough for my mind. At least she was able to tell most of our players apart, unlike Tim Lane who gets confused by all the blondes, including at one stage saying that Shirley was Johncock.....

But I agree on the voice, in that she was very monotone, but many commentators seem to have that same issue. In watching the game my dad did mention that his favourite bit of the commentary was when there was none for a couple of minutes.

Personally I prefer monotone to Rex Hunt excitable rubbish. Just wanna watch the game ffs.

Greg Gallman Saturday absolutely terrible turned the ball over too many times! Good results in time trials but has to work on kicking. Was impressed with Jarrhan Jarcy will he be a regular in the line up? Whats the news with Phil Davis is he going to play or what?

Yeah, has to work on his kicking, considering Gallman is injured and did not play on Saturday, good work.

Greg Gallman has a broken collarbone or something. Number 34 was Myke Cook, which was confusing for everyone!

Phil Davis is doing full competitive training as of the most recent session, but it's hard to say if he's going to play... I'd guess not, personally, but it's just a guess.

When its a game that doesn't involve the crows I fund the additional excitement useful in keeping me interested.

Yeah you wanna hear the game but I prefer it with a bit of life

ABC 891 is the best commentary for this on the radio. May not entertain but you can listen and know what is happening.

Yes! Definitely agree! Always listen to this at the game. Thought about turning down the TV and listening to it, but the gf raises her eyebrows at my football obsession a fair bit already.
