Watching this game makes me happy Ponting is no longer captain.
Agreed 100% athiest. I thought I was the only one. Was about to post something similar. IMO it was clear, based on tonight's efforts (albeit defending a modest total) that Clarkes installation as captain has been a positive move. The same bland, unimaginative stuff was on display again. It reminded me of the dark days between 2008 and 2010

It's hard to be imaginative when you are defending 150 odd off 40 overs because most of your batsmen performed like donkeys.

Glad Sri Lanka won tbh, they deserved a win after playing some great cricket the last couple of games and just missing out. Keeps the series interesting too.

Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan, Mathews are quality batsmen and Malinga, Kula Shaker and Maharoof are all quality bowlers, they will be a handful if they make the finals. In fact I reckon they are a bigger chance of beating us in the finals than India are.

I agree with your statement which is why I pointed out that it was a modest total. However, he waited far too long to put a spinner on, which could have taken the pace of the ball - dilshan and Mahela feasted on the quicks. To add to this, he brings Lee back on, as if it's magically going to get a wicket. The bloke got carted. Perhaps someone like Dave Hussey may have put in a few tight overs to build a little pressure, we don't know. Point is, Ponting IMO has shown, like tonight, a lack of imagination and lateral, strategic thinking throughout his tenure as captain which was one of the main criticisms of his captaincy.

Also, Ponting himself was one of the main turkeys that made a paltry 2 runs.

Agreed. After everything that country has been through and all the rubbish to do with the Cricket Board over there, it's good to see them showing some gumption. Sangha, Mahela amongst others are class players and as a cricket fan, you like to see the great players of the world fire. Great result for the series, though I'm not sold on your prediction that they would be a more formidable opponent against Australia in the finals just yet

I was really expecting Starc do to something, this was the sort of pitch where he has been tearing batsmen apart.

These results happen when you start playing with the rotation policy especially when you already have new guys in the side like Christian, Warner and Wade then trying to bring Forrest into that mix as well.

I thought then and i think now that India's pathetic performance in the tests made Australia look better than we really are. If we were playing a test series against South Africa, Sri Lanka or England i suspect it would have been a much much tougher contest.

Sri Lanka have what the Indians don't have, plenty of batsmen in form and bowlers with the ability to take 20 wickets in a test match.

We have always had a rotation policy in ODI cricket after a summer of tests. It isn't an excuse at all. Lacking the intensity with bat and ball. Need runs from our openers for a change.
In previous years the rotation policy has only been employed once the series was won. And in the SA series we didn't employ it at all and still got smoked 4-1. The last CBS series we lost to India, so I don't know why we are suddenly expecting wins when in the past we have lost with the rotation system in place. Not to mention we are playing the World Champions and the runners up, not some minnows.

Not sure that is true, always remember Punter getting rested. Gilly got a rest to give Haddin a run. Rotation policy is not to blame. We have the players to play good cricket even while rotating players.

I know the commentators have been behaving as though he has been playing like McGrath, but you know, he really hasn't been pulling up any trees. He did nothing on very helpful pitches against NZ, had a good test match at the WACA and has four wickets for this series in 4 matches.

He's too new to assume that he'll turn up just because the pitch might be a bit helpful.

We aren't the force we once were, we didn't even make the semi finals in the WC so what makes you think we can go on and beat India and co with a depleted lineup? India are world champions for a reason and they are dam good in this format. You can't just expect to rotate players and beat them in the process.

How many players are we rotating?

These results happen when your best players are injured, and your normally good players are out of form suddenly

He's been a good run since his talk with Wasim, was taking regular wickets in the Big Bash, then the WACA test and performed well in the first ODI and was useful in the next match too. Hence why I figured he would show up in this match.

Hussey last match. Rotated/injured same concept your best players aren't in your starting 11 so why would you suddenly expect us to beat the world champions and WC runners up?

Australia's still the number 1 team in Odis so you'd expect them to show a little fight on home soil. We beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka a couple of months ago......

Also, that world cup was played on their home soil, and India and Sri Lanka are crazy good over there. Australia is completly different setting.

SL beat us on home soil a couple of seasons ago and India won the last CBS series here so they are just fine over here. As for the SL series, take a look at the side we played and compare it to the one in this match. Also we lost 2 matches in that series, is that us not showing fight?

You don't win every game in ODIs, heck there are days where you collapse like we did. That is ODI cricket.

We are nothing without our mighty leader.
Does anyone else notice a distinct propaganda campaign with regards to Michael Clarke?

For most of the summer channel 9 has been overly praising Michael Clarke, almost to the degree that it seems forced.

It is like they know his unpopular and they are trying to pump him up.

Ashley Mallet has recently written an article claiming Clarke to be destined to 'walk in the footsteps' of the 3 greatest Australian captains in Benaud, Chappell and Taylor.

This is after 7/12 test match wins and barely a year in the job. He may well be a fine captain in time but surly this is hyerbole to put Ravi Shastri IPL's exploits to shame.

For what it's worth, I have felt for sometime our fortunes ride on Ricky Ponting's willow. Not coincidence that during Ponting's slump we were crap. If Ponting fires tomorrow we will win.

Aussies have a pretty good record in JAMODI's in the sub-continent. I think they lacked toughness as regards the pressure of the World Cup.

I've only noticed that it's been going on since he was about 21?

But I think he's doing a good job as skipper, I'm not an anti-Clarke fan at all apart from him being sometimes too slow in short format matches.
