Thought it'd be worth it's own thread for a little bit - perhaps to be merged into the news thread later.

It looks like all players are getting the 20 % pay increase.

In other key details contained in the agreement:

  • Annual contribution of $4 million to the AFL Players’ Association’s Lifetime Health Care and Career Ending Injury fund
  • Annual contribution of $250,000 for concussion research, inclusive of all tribunal fines
  • $13 million over the life of the CBA to fund Industry-aligned Player Development programs and services
  • 12 business class airfares per flight for WA-based teams when doing east/west travel
  • Business class or premium economy airfares on international flights other than New Zealand
  • Cost of single room accommodation has been removed from the clubs’ soft caps
  • Removal of provision allowing players to contribute to cost of pre-season camps
  • Eight grand final tickets for participating players
  • 1000 tickets for distribution amongst players
  • Category-A rookie-listed players will be eligible to play senior football from 2018
  • Players no longer need to be restricted free agents before becoming unrestricted
  • At least one additional free agency provision to be adopted by October 2017, from the following — Free agency for life, free agency portability, restricted free agency at four years for any players under median salary or such other change proposed by AFL and agreed by AFLPA
  • Pre-season mini-breaks will increase from three to four days
  • ‘Rested’ players or ‘held over’ travelling emergencies let out of their senior team will receive match payments
  • Players agree to license their personal GPS data to be made available to clubs and broadcasters with specified limitations

I really hope the dollars filter down to the bottom tier players but suspect it will be the likes of Dangerfield, Selwood, Pendlebury and co, that will be the main beneficiaries.

They seem well looked after with the 20% increase across the board, but you're right in that it'll probably be an uneven distribution in the increased cap. Hard being a lower tiered AFL listed player. Don't earn enough for life and most don't have much time to develop employable skills whilst on a list/ junior years getting there.

The GPS data thing looks interesting. Whole new world of stats opens up if champion data and the like have access, particularly if it's live.
Stitch something into the footy and you've got everything you'll ever need, short of deploying an AI to analyse the video.

I imagine there'll be all new discussions on metrics associated with GPS data, like "Port Adelaide covered a total of 214 km at a minimum jogging speed last week - the third highest amount recorded so far. How much is this going to affect their run off a six day break and trip across to WA against the Dockers who are a lower-ranked running side but at home?" etc.

Will be interesting for the first couple of weeks, then spew worthy after.

Combine the speed the ball is moving with targets hit and you've got a new standard for elite kicks.

Combine uncontested marks and marks on the lead in the forward 50 with forward GPS and you find your most effective forwards at generating scoring opportunities for minimal effort.

There's huge ways to improve the aesthetics of the game, and to more objectively identify the right juniors to do it.

Good chance to see which forwards spend too much time sitting in the goal square :).

Salary cap is no longer a salary cap.

If a club can't comfortably fit all of its listed players under the cap, given the amount it will be increased upfront, then they clearly don't know how to use a calculator. Gone are the days when successful clubs have to move quality players on to stay within the cap.

It won't really make a difference. Wage rises across the board, so players are now worth more money. There will still be clubs offering overs to poach players.

Think you may slightly be missing a key point. All players have received a pay rise. The cap is definitely still a strong presence to clubs. Players know its up so they'll naturally ask for more on top of their pay rise too. I think that we'll actually see a couple clubs make a few cap blunders over the next season in a settling period forcing players out of clubs who've overestimated the new cap space.

Club's already have this stuff - only difference now is Kingy has a whole new segment "In The Lab" to break it down to stupid levels of detail for us yeah?
