CDs are pretty tough critters. I've had CD-Rs that have been floating around out of their cases, slid across the floor etc and still work just fine. Unless they're pretty severe scratches that run parallel to the edge, I think the laser just continues on its merry way. Watch out for the top side though, the layer of plastic is much thinner and if you scratch it, you're more likely than not to go right through the reflective silver coating.

Of course, if you actually want to care for your CDs, the best way is to ALWAYS keep it in its case, handle by the edges and avoid cleaning with sandpaper if you can help it.

I heard on talkback radio that you can chuck 'em in the dishwasher and they wont be harmed.

I try not to touch the silver/mirror surface.
Is it myth or are they fairly robust?

You probably could do that, the heat wouldn't do it much though.

Some DVD's can take alot of punishment as well.

Like Des said, pending on how bad the scratches are, they'll handle well. A deep scratch will kill it before 1000 small ones.
