Re: Celebrity Roy boys

As a kid at the Junction Oval, I recall some regulars in the Social Club Members' area. John Blackman, Sir Frank Wilkes, The Cop Shop Actors(Paula Duncan, John Orcsic, Gil Tucker...) and at other games during the 1970's, '80's and '90's, Jon English and John Waters might be spotted.;)

Re: Celebrity Roy boys

..."Ugly" Dave Gray, Ken Morgan, Karen Knowles, Nancye Cain, Tom Reynolds, Barry Dickins, and of course, Don Chipp(played 3 games in 1947). I might think of some more. Ronnie Biggs?;)

Sorry folks, I'm a bit late on the scene. A far more impressive list than I expected! I always thought Tim Lane was a Carlton supporter?:confused:

Does anyone know any current or former AFL footballers that grew up barracking for Fitzroy? I guess they can be classed as celebrities as well (some more than others).

Here are the ones I think were Roys supporters:

- Joanthan Brown
- Luke Power
- Sam Power
- Matthew Lloyd
- Troy Selwood - an article I have quotes Troy directly as the only Selwood brother to follow their fathers team of Fitzroy;
- Travis Johnstone (his whole family certainly did at least);
- Marc Murphy??? (just guessing it was a possibility, although not at all sure)

Any others?

Marc Murphy definitely didn't barrack for the Roys as his old man hated them after getting traded.

Simon Prestigiacomo from the Pies was an avid Royboy!

Don't know if Lloydy was a Royboy but his favourite player growing up was Superboot.

And another Hardy family member Marieke Hardy former writer on Neighbours (following her parents), plus parts in other shows and as the blonde in the car in a .05 Commercial, when a littel tacker Marieke always on Thursday took a Chocolate cake to Lakeside for Timmy Pekin and others.

I used to work with Marieke one year on a mini-series and indeed Marieke and her famous family were mad Roys! At the time I was also working with the Lions on-field and we had a lot of cast from Neighbours coming in to the rooms and there were strong rumours of Boydy and one of the Neighbours girls who was always in there but can't remember her name, just her face?

Who remembers the back page of the Herald Sun when Wally Masur was wearing a Fitzroy jumper prior to the Davis Cup tie against the US at Kooyong? Obviously the Brett Stephens and Gavin Hopper relationship was the reason for that.

Now, the most famous Fitzroy supporter of all was of course Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her Daughter, Princess Anne. When the Lions played Richmond in front Their Majesties in 1970 they were quoted as saying "well, the colours are certainly regal and the lion is certain English so we shall spirit on the majestic lions shant we."

On Matthew Lloyd - I heard him say it himself on TV a while back (that he barracked for Fitzroy growing up).

On the Murphy's - I have read a bit quoting John Murphy since Marc started playing, and in relation to Fitzroy. While he probably hated the Club at the time, it seems like he has definitely let go of the whole episode and seems to mostly talk of Fitzroy with great fondness. I also know he wasn't keen on the merger with Brisbane when it happened - so he must have had felt some stake in Fitzroy at the time to have an opinion.

Just makin' sure these guys were listed, while refining the quick find list.

This will become the "People of note who GAF about us." index.

[General] [Tim Lane] [Bert Newton] [Jon English] [John Blackman] [Ken Morgan] [Gil Tucker] [Libby & Toadfish!] [Elaine Page] [Alan & Galia Hardy] [Peter O'Brien] [Maryanne Fahey]
- Other Folk : [Bernie Ahern]

Tim, you may be able to help with something I just posted on the Brissie board -

She first performed The Loco-Motion during a Fitzroy Football Club benefit concert. The Loco-Motion was the highest selling Australian single in the 1980's

from here - Big Pond

or if anyone else knows something, please let us know, as I am sure there will be more than a few interested. I have posted this in the Brisbane/Fitzroy relationship discussion thread. Thanx BR.

I'm pretty sure it was a fundraising benefit at Festival Hall (maybe Dallas Brookes Hall) in 1986.

Actually there's an old thread on this board about it:
