Census 2016

Okay - got my letter in the mail last Thursday with my unique code, and directions to a website. there is some bit about ring this number if you want a paper version.

I can understand them wanting people to do it online because it is cheaper. But two questions:

Is every household in Austrlia supposed to log on to the same web server in a single evening??

Aren't they leaving it a bit late for people that want a paper version? I know of a couple of people that only got their first letter today.

Seems a bit dicey to me.
I still haven't received anything in the mail with less than a week to go.

It would have to be odds on for the system to crash. And why the **** can they dictate to me that I have to do the census on that particular night under the threat of a fine? Why can't it be done beforehand or later?
Because your answers may well be different from day to day. Especially if you have a family.

$180 per night is the fine, $1800 for false information.

Should have booked a return flight to NZ months ago.
You still have to complete one even if you're out of the country on census night AFAIK.

Their are very strong laws related to compelling people to complete census information.
The information is very important for optimum planning for our future.
Why would you be so childish to the need to supply the information.?
You've never come across Lebbo73 before I take it?

Never mind how long they're keeping it for be worried about the fact your name and address will be linked to it.

Nice online database with everyone's name address and other personal details on there. The government already knows everything about us, but it's a nice treasure trove of 24 million people's personal information all collected up nice and nearly in alphabetical order as well. All up to date as well.

It's not a matter of if but when they'll breach that database and steal all our information.

Going online for this shit is as stupid as voting online or voting machines.

It's not secure and never will be secure.

Instead of spending $17000 on a new oven for Kiribili house or millions of dollars for a new fleet of top of the range luxury and admired BMW's for them selves or giving them selves pay raises worth tens of thousands of dollars each annually that they don't ******* need, they should have spent it on the paper and envelopes for this bloody census that none of give a shit about.
Names and addresses have been on every census I've completed in the past??

There was a guy from the ABS interviewed on the Project earlier and he said something along the lines of "complete it early", when answering one of the questions

So I thought I'd see if the site would let me do just that
Logged in and filled it out 100% correct as if it were Tuesday night
Got to the point of submission, expecting it to block me and force me to save the info until Tuesday
But no...hit sumbit and get a thank you message and a receipt number

Checked the website and I can't find anything relating to early submission and any penalties (only for late submissions).
So as far as I'm concerned I have performed my civil duty and completed the 2016 Census

Interesting enough, the final question on this ONLINE survey basically asks "Does anyone in this dwelling connect to the internet?"

All complete.

Currently live with two foreigners and therefore considered myself to be the only person in the dwelling.

"Public concerns have been growing in the lead up to the August 9 national survey over the potential risks to individual privacy generated by the policy change.

Former ABS chief statistician Bill McLennan called it the “most significant invasion of privacy” ever perpetrated by the ABS. Privacy lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia labelled it a “serious breach of trust”, and NSW Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Coombs this week said she was “concerned” about the risks."

I will be calling the Census phone number tomorrow and requesting a paper form!

I've had them absolutely ####ing hound me for the last three months to fill out a motorist transport survey.

I've done my best to ignore it but they have called 3 times in 3 weeks to remind me of the $180 a day fine that's hanging over my head.

Unbelievable.

I've missed your point. What are you upset about?

its a bit of a worry. The data already goes down to CCD level so why exactly do they need to go sub 150 home. Life expectancy is a bit of a nonsense since there is the birth/deaths register.

All the new policy does it make it increasingly likely to get worse quality data. I won't be stating my correct income if they can identify me by name.

Had a guy show up to my door to give me the paper copy on Sunday. Didn't need to order one. Not sure what you lot are on about.

Anyway I like the census. I like helping produce accurate demographic data about our country. I like seeing how religious affiliations and ancestral backgrounds have changed over the last 5 years, along with population data.

Once heard a talkback caller saying our auusie way of life was threatened by not being able to have bacon with your KFC

I like bacon as much as the next person, but KFC is the aussie way of life?

The 'Aussie way of life' is about having KFC in the same block as Golden Dragon Palace, Mario's Pizza and Emre's Kebabs. #multiculturalheartfailure

KFC not having bacon isn't a sign of progress.

Would the ABS share information with other government departments like Medicare and would that include name?

A friend is worried that their health details may then find its way to an insurance company he is having a dispute with.

can you really not think of any legitimate reasons why? should be obvious.

last census i was selected for a follow-up interview from an ABS volunteer. pretty rudely pushed her way into my house and sat her laptop down on the kitchen bench...right next to a massive bag of weed i'd bought the day before. i hope that wasn't included in my stats.

'We dint do that stuff mate, were aussies'

Heard a story on another forum today about a part of rural Tasmania where everyone has a PO box because there is no postal delivery service. The Census envelopes got mailed out en masse to street addresses, but with no postal service it was left to the local postmaster to try and match up addresses with people's PO box number. She or he gave up, returned them all to sender as undeliverable. Apparently everyone was wondering how their census form was going to get delivered, since the ABS are no longer employing people to hand out physical forms but want everyone instead to do it online.
