It's the Chinese with payback for Mack 'The Knife' sledging their swimmer.

Person makes stupid comment on facebook or twitter, 'my account was hacked'

Government sets up website for the Census, which is flooded with everyone logging on at once trying to complete it and the system can't cope with the volume. 'We wuz hacked'.

I thought the whole reason the internet was developed as a web was to ensure communication could never go out during times of war and isolated bombing interrupting communication lines.

I guess hacking was an unheard of issue back then

It must just be a coincidence that this hacking attack took place in peak times last night when every man and his dog was trying to log on.

I can't see what reason overseas hackers would have for hacking an Australian census website anyway so it sounds like a bullshit excuse to me.

do we actually have until Sept to do it? then why the **** do they yap on like august 9th is the 'due date'
Because August 9 is Census night, you have to fill the form out in regards to August 9 whether it is currently August 9 or not. You can fill it out weeks in advance or weeks later, but it has to be relevant to August 9. It's a very simple concept to avoid people filling it in on August 6 and counting the 10 people that are at their house for a party, and then one of those people filling it out again on August 13 when those same 10 people are at their house for a party.

If it is a bullshit excuse its a terrible one. Many already were worried about hackers and security risks with online census to begin with. To further inflame those fears unnecessarily is a very silly tactic.

If it was hacking how come I could get onto the website and get to the java pop up which gave me a message saying to come back later - wouldn't nothing work?

What time? Most ppl just got the generic site down messages.

Either way, if they didn't size it correctly they DDoS themselves :)

After 7:30pm - reading further it looks like they just shut it down after then but didn't tell anyone

The whole DDoS thing is a crock of shit anyway. They just didn't have the resources.
DDoS is not hacking anyway
Shots fired at 4chan. (or is it 8chan these days).

Slightly off topic but I love the general public perception of hacking.
Mum: Can you hack?
Me: Yes. I just log on to commonwealthbank.com.au and there is a secret login that lets me see everyone's bank details

Surprisingly enough a DDoS attack unlike a DoS attack looks like alot of different people trying to logon at the same time

The govt has now said the dont think it was an attack.

They obviously didnt work out a proper capacity plan or have a decent load testing strategy.

ABS is going to have a hard time recovering from this.

Lol this guy last week predicted this would happen

A spokesman from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has stated that: “Online could handle 1 million form submissions every hour. That’s twice the capacity we expect to need” (“Chaos plagues countdown to online census”, 2/8). The ABS is expecting to collect data on 24 million Australians, but the only information I have received is an envelope in the mail. One side states “Your census login inside. Keep it safe.” And on the other: “Keep this safe and save the date. Census night is Tuesday, 9 August 2016.” There is no suggestion you should do any preparations, or that there are any alternatives. So I expect most eligible people will arrive home on the ninth, have dinner, then think “oh, the (expletive deleted) census”, and expect to be able to finish it before bedtime. This could mean up to 10 million people trying to respond in one hour. I predict total chaos, and as it will be too late to make other arrangements a very large number of people will say something like “To hell with that”, and go to bed.

Not going to bother with it. If they question it I'll act like a 70 year old computer illiterate fogie and say I tried but it didn't work so I threw my computer out and went back to watching A Country Practice as I thought it was a one night only thing.

They door knock and will give you a paperform to do.

They would have planned say 10,000 and now will have to do 200,000. They are going to need a bigger boat. Door Knock December 2017.

Interfering with the census would you would assume be a crime against the commonwealth. The only investigative organisation empowered to look into it would be the AFP. The police force with the largest and most capable cyber unit.

Yet a commonwealth officer has gone off running to the DSD an organisation that answers to practically no one and can do all sorts of murky stuff in the name of national defence.

Coverup much?

"The site will be restored as soon as the Australian Signal Directorate and the ABS and IBM are satisfied that it can be restored with all of the necessary defences against denial of service and other attacks in place"

"We're very disappointed. We were told that our copy of Norton Anti-Virus running in the background was all that we needed!"
