Centrelink debt notices - Turnbull govt reaches new levels of arse clown-ness

yep for the second paragraph. We all want low taxes and we all want the services we hold important to what makes Australia great (medicare etc). What's is frustrating is govts tell us (Labor) there is $19B pa waste in the health sector but neither side seems capable of addressing that. Imagine if that $19B went towards extending medicare into dental and improved mental health service.

It is also frustrating to see the unemployed locked out of society, not only from there perspective (self-esteem, mental health, socialising, purpose) but also from the state's perspective being an under-utilised resource. Perhaps we should not only look at reducing waste but also improving productivity.

Perhaps many of our social costs wouldn't be so expensive if we mobilised the 6% official unemployed, those hidden behind non-participation figures and those under employed. Council gardens, train stations, child care etc all come to mind.

Cant do child care. You actually need to be trained to care for children, remember this isnt watching your niece but 30+/kids in one go for most of the day. Also they would need a working with children police check.

More importantly, would you let your kid be looked.after complete randoms without training?

For council parks, i.believe a.lot of this work is already done by people serving community service orders (it was at my local for for eg)

For train stations, i think working with children may be an issue as well.

WFD had this issue too. Unless you want to return to the whitlam era of rock painting, there are few truly unskilled jobs these days that can have a day in day out labour pool

yep, there is always issues but in the past we gave these guys guns......what could possibly go wrong there?

I don't think giving up on people, because of limitations, is fair or reasonable. everyone deserves respect, the right to participate and we shouldn't search for reasons to give up on them.

with opportunity, people shine!

Im not saying give up on them, im saying the solutions arent easy or come at a price

Work for the dole programs have to work for business

That means finding businesses who can accept day by day unskilled labour. Thats a small pool

Anyone else see that dumb campaigner Brandis on Q&A tonight on this?

Can you name a worse AG in living memory?
Yep....former Victorian AG Rob Hulls. Absolute clown. This is the guy who believes that no one deserves to stay in jail and everyone should be released.
He perfected the revolving door to prison and turned into a joke. He resigned in 2010 due to illness and since then everyone has been cleaning up his mess. We have a mass murderer in Julian Knight who killed 7 people and seriously wounded another 19 people, and was eligible for parole in 2014. Why wouldn't that scum simply receive 7 life sentences, and 25 years for each person he wounded? Pretty simple, however our useless judiciary and successive Labor Govt's refuse to allow mandatory sentencing. How many men have been convicted of multiple rape, in some cases 10 or 12, and the offender receives 6-8 years minimum. How do they reach such a decision? You get a discount for the more crimes you commit!

God help you if you are travelling 6 km over the speed limit and you get done by a speed camera. No problem giving the average punter a serious haircut.

Mandatory sentencing is a bad thing, though.

Next thing you'll be advocating three strikes laws.

During the Asian financial crisis, iirc, Suharto decreed that employers weren't allowed to sack anyone, or something along those lines.

I clearly remember going into shops in big centres and having 20 staff following me around. It was actually unnerving.

Still happens in department stores in Malaysia.
Very unnerving even though they smile alot.

If anyone out there is being harassed by Centrelink or their debt collectors, (or knows of anyone) just remember the same Govt that is ruthlessly chasing you, actually has laws to protect customers from the actions of debt collectors. Not many people bother to check their rights and just accept that harassment and stress is part of the process. It's not!

If you tell a debt collection company or debt collector to stop contacting you, they must abide. Remember if you do this then the creditor may decide to then commence legal action without further notice. If unsure go see your lawyer. If you cannot afford a lawyer try and contact Legal Aid or seek the assistance of a financial counsellor. Once they become involved in a case, the calls usually stop.

The following attachment provides an overview as to the rights of people with respect to the actions of debt collection companies. In typical Govt speak it is only a guideline, however there have been a number of debt collection companies which have incurred significant fines for their unethical actions. For eg, some have told people usually elderly, immigrants or people who just don't understand the law and their rights, that the police have been notified and will be on their way to their residence unless they pay the debt. There are a lot of cowboys out there!

http://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/776_Debt collection guideline_February 2016_FA.PDF

It is not reasonable or acceptable to contact a debtor to:
• frighten or intimidate the debtor
• demoralise, tire out or exhaust the debtor
• embarrass the debtor in front of other people
• or for other similar purposes (see part 2, sections 17 and 18, Conduct towards the debtor or their representatives and Conduct towards family members and other third parties

Example:
Unnecessary and unduly frequent attempted contacts
If you phone a debtor and the debtor answers the call but subsequently terminates the call
(contact), and then you proceed to repeatedly phone the debtor throughout the same day despite
the debtor not answering the calls (attempted contact), this may amount to unnecessary and
unduly frequent attempted contacts and could constitute undue harassment. (you think so!)

That was because you were stealing s**t

In Indonesia's case and at the time, it was done to keep people participating/engaged.

Jokes aside, youre right

Same happens in china, and its about treating the customer like a king

Greeters at the doors for instance just say hello to you, thats it! Counters usually have multiple staff, with ones to process your sale and one to manage the credit card payment - and these are separate to the actual salesperson who helps you initially

As opposed to Myer and a few other places , where you walk around for 20 minutes looking for a staff member, or have to wait for 10 minutes at the self serve to have the privilege of having to pay the same prices so you can then pack and scan your own groceries. How does the price of banana's fluctuate in three days? $1.99 to $2.50 to $3.50 then back to $2.50? Australian consumers are treated like fools.

And you know if they could replace customer service staff with a video screen attached to a Segway they would do it.

In the end though it will be an app that tracks you through the shop to spray baked bread scent as you pass the toaster oven display, lets you scan stuff on the spot to ramp up the impulse buys, etc.

Actually that is the future. Corporations without the hassle of human staff. Unfortunately none of them realise that if people have no jobs, they cannot then buy products. Could hurt their bottom line.

Isnt this the Walmart philosophy? Pay them just enough to have them spending but not so much to break the bottom line

they probably said the same thing during the industrial revolution. Only to find out the there were more jobs, higher pay, more products and services, lower prices and lead to the most prosperous and peaceful time in history.

We are now opening up the world to this amazing economy and continue to free people from the burden of s**t jobs.

In reality the issues we have today is adjusting the framework to ensure greater fairness.......less tariffs, international property rights, international tax harmonisation etc. We also need to help nations implement birth control, education, social security and medical etc.

so weeks on from the media hype and lies, we can all relax knowing the debt notices are no different to any other claim for liability. Sure the process could have been handled better but at least we know Centrelink is trying to be a good custodian of capital and monitoring for fraud and or overpayment.

Wouldn't the Govt be better placed to chase the cash economy where GST is not paid? Perhaps take a more rigorous approach to companies and individuals that avoid paying tax. Perhaps force all of the athletes that have used the various Institute of Sports and then moved overseas to pay their HECS? Perhaps when a multi millionaire owes 50 or 60 million, the ATO does not buckle and accept one third of the amount? Much easier to send out notices and harass people who clearly cannot look after themselves or struggle from pay to pay. Instead we have the Speaker in the Victorian Parliament claiming $40,000 because he lives in Queenscliff and is forced to live in Tarneit to represent people he could not give a s**t about. Amazingly people keep voting in these clowns and their Party. You get the leaders you deserve.

I dare say it isn't one over the other. All areas of waste and lost income should be addressed.

Are you taking the piss?

Can you explain how you can compare annual data with fortnightly data?

Do you realise that most claims for liability actually set out the basis for that claim?

it has caught some legitimate cheats and demonstrates the system is watching to all. This in itself prevents fraud as people behave different if they know there is monitoring.

and no that's not the case, usually a statement is provided with just figures. It is only once a dispute of claim, is received in response, that is detail provided. Importantly a debt collector or a legal process can't automatically start if the amount is communicated "as disputed".
