The fact CEY is contracted probably puts him in the better position and I just wonder if CEY was afforded the same opportunities Lyons was this season what he might be capable of??
I think we saw what he was capable of in 2015. No idea why the ball didn't keep rolling.

Of course the reason that CEY hasn't received the same opportunities as Lyons is because he's not as good a player as Lyons...

He kicked 2 in each game but wasn't very impressive in my eyes
Needs to be played every game to get the most out of him. In and out of the team is shocking for continuity and confidence. always thought he has something special but he's never really been given a really good go IMO.

My mail is that Lyons really wants to stay and there is a good chance that he takes the contract we gave him in the end. He is very settled in Adelaide, has a long term girlfriend who doesn't want to move. He recently bought a house here as well.

Wouldn't blame Lyons at all if he left. Has been amazingly loyal to the club that has, if we're honest, not treated him too well.

I know it's professional sport, but it's a bit sad to see guys like Lyons and Vince who love the club/city shoved out the door and then we get all upset when people like Gunston and Danger leave.

I like CEY but unfortunately I don't think he's ever going to be a major player for us. He simply wasn't able to consistently push anyone out of our midfield this season, and there must be a reason for that. With the expected arrival of Gibbs who will likely take the position in the starting 22 of Thommo I just don't see a place for him if he's fit. I know he plays a different role to both Thommo and Gibbs but 23 into 22 still doesn't go. We probably won't have another year like this one injury wise but I still think it'd be best for both parties if they parted ways

Every time CEY has got an opportunity, he's looked at home playing AFL. Had a great start to the year in 2015, then got injured and surprisingly not brought back in. He's great in clearances, is a goal kicking mid and has decent pace. Lyons is handy but his type is a dime a dozen. Had a good year, we should cash in while we can.

Having a reasonably good midfielder on a ridiculously low contract isn't a bad outcome for us

This is true but it does limit our trade options somewhat.

Remember we don't have a 2nd round draft pick this year do we have 13 which will be part of the Gibbs deal and then the next one is 3rd round pick that might get used on Jarman.

Do we dab into the 2nd round next year and risk the possibility of going into minus again next year if we are match a bid for Edwards?

There are not many players that we are happy to trade that actually have good value. Lyons is one of them and I suspect he was the key to getting enough currency to get the Gibbs deal done. Unless we get a super nice surprise with Hendo compo pick. I suspect we won't get any compo for him but thats just me.

Where's the "what have we been offered for em then I can give an opinion" option?

But in a broad sense, both are generic average depth players, so not fazed.

Yeah I agree it is probably better to trade him for currency. But if he stays on a ludicrously low contract, it's not so bad

I think with Thommo in the 2's and being replaced with an outside player, Lyons will average 26-27 touches with half Thommo's midfield time being added to his 2016 minutes. I'm not sure what Gibbs would do to that, I reckon he'd he ok in Mackay's half brute strength inside and half elite pace, run and carry outside role. Tough one really.

They seemed neck and neck during the preseason and it looked like CEY was heading towards first crack. But I don't think he went all that well and Lyons got the nod. He then grasped the opportunity and was unlucky to be the guy that made way for the returning B Crouch. But good sides have unlucky players. Anyway, rightfully returned when Crouch was sent to find more match conditioning in the 2's and held his spot through sheer good football.

Some posters were a bit peeved that Lyons was restored to the 1's, preferring lesser performed and overrated youth. It may not have been your intent, but your post could lead the un-learned to think that Lyons was perhaps afforded opportunities that he didn't deserve. I know that you don't think that, but some could read it that way.

CEY apparently wants to stay. Lyons apparently wants to stay.

Can we really keep both? Do we need both? Although different players, can you see them playing in the same team on a regular basis?

If not who do you prefer to keep. For mine it is CEY. Big bodied midfielders are hard to find. I am hoping that Thommo becomes a depth player to truly allow CEY to develop.

Of course this thread may be NULL and VOID by weeks end.....because they could be both gone. Who knows!!
Couldn't keep both when gibbs and rocky come

Hmm, the guy who said he was Jaenschy liked this...

man we've done just about everything to get rid of lyons, yet he keeps sticking around. I like the guy, hope he continues to make it - but he's crazy.

I agree! The kid is a real nice bloke and I love to see him succeed. He is obviously head over heals and I hope it really works out for him. He had some genuine interest from other clubs, especially Melbourne with a 3 year deal a couple of years back but has decided to stay. One of the main reasons being that the girlfriend doesn't want to leave Adelaide.

If he does stay and plays a lot of games for us, I kinda hope we give him a massive bonus on his next contract
