Setanta was certainly a cult hero in his earlier years at the club. Now he has become a little bit of a whipping boy if he has an off day.

Seems that expectations can change status. While he was an athletic fish out of water, everyone wished him well. Now that he is expected to produce consistently, he doesn't have the same warm feelings going his way.

I think the key to being a cult hero is they can't be an out-and-out champion.

They need to have an underdog or some unusual quality about them, so that they aren't popular with everyone.

From the current list, I definitely love Mitch. He's not the most talented, but he's a hard nut that gives his all. Skinny Jeffy Garlett is another one that gets the juices flowing*. Have to include Setanta too - he may just hold the all-time AFL record for bonehead plays per game, but god he gets excited when he/we kicks a goal. You can see the passion.

From recent years, my fave cult heroes were

  • Mil Hanna (top footballer, but what a weird looking dude...)
  • Harry Madden (Looked so uncoordinated, but was a champion ruckman. His ungainly run away from Shaun Rehn remains one of my favourite football memories)
  • Anthony Franchina - tough little guy who made the most of what he had. Interesting that he passed on the tough little tagger mantle to the next #45 on our list

The End.

Ah, that's the guy from the Toyota ad :)

Sad to see how much Robbo's stock has dropped 'round here:(

Vin Cattogio.

Percy Jones - Jumping up like a jack in the box in the Carlton goal square after a goal is scored by a teammate that sets up a win in a big game; even if it was an easy goal from 10 metres out directly in front. Body language and facial expressions by Percy whenever the umpire paid a free kick against him.

If looks could kill... he would have run out of places to stash the bodies

Few that come to mind;

Bruce Doull
Ang Cristou
Glenn Manton
Chris Bryan - for a short time
Simon Wiggins
Mil Hanna.

Ron De Iulio...

Home grown
On my first trip to the Tiwi Islands in 1997 it didn't take me long to understand the love that the territorians had for football.

When we arrived and headed out to the communities, one young boy charged towards me and asked if I could put him on my shoulders. I said, no problems, what's your name? He replied, I'm Ron Delulio. The boy had named himself after the Carlton half-forward who played 104 games through 1992-99.

I found that very humorous and it became very common among my handful of trips to the top end that the younger boys were named or chose to name themselves after their AFL heroes.

After Josh's first game I thought we were seeing the start of a new cult hero at the club.... sadly people have just bashed him so far this year.

Hopfully he grow that fro' back and become the cult hero we all know he can be.

No idea why but when I was young I used to love Brent Heaver...anyone remember him?

Then a little later it was another number 17 in Setanta, just loved his passion.

Right now its Kreuz...just get the feeling he will be very special.

I did love Des English when I was very young, Ang Christou when I was older and Zach is my current cult hero.

Been a dennis fan for years.

One of his first few games did a magical run just batting the ball along in front of himself to escape the opposition.

Cant remember who or if a goal was scored, or even if it got turned over.

All I know is that 'I dunno the elbow man' as mum called him was a fave of mine.

He was the elbow man as we didnt remember his name and elbow is in the field of your arm.

Rhino, Wiggins & Kouta immediately came to mind for me. I was at Rhino's 50th....it was bloody fantastic. For Kouta - I figure once the entire crowd chants your name at the end of the game instead of singing the song...you've reached cult status. I THINK it was when we played against Sydney (maybe WC) at Princes Park. Took 17 marks and absolutely dominated the game like I have rarely seen. He was definitely HOT HOT HOT that day (wasn't that just cringeworthy!)

Personally, Glenn Manton always had a bit of a cult following in my family.

Edit: Oh, and Captain Carlton is my cult hero.

a few lesser lights from myself

Loved Andy Phillips and Adrian Whitehead - both had careers cut short by injuries

Mark Majerzak (excuse the spelling) - that guy could take a mark, pity not too much else

Darren Tarczon - laid one of the biggest bumps I've ever seen, or heard, right in front of me, I'm pretty sure against West Coast on the AFL members wing at PP
