Gatto though is a gangster and a thug and everyone knows it.

GROCON has been accused of using a Hells Angels bikie to intimidate striking workers as part of a bitter dispute with a big construction union.
The Age has obtained a photo of two senior Grocon safety managers speaking to the Hells Angels bikie near a Brisbane building site in mid-March. The two managers, Peter Hewett and Daniel Van Camp, have also been central figures in the dispute that has shut down part of central Melbourne recently.
People involved in the Brisbane picket against Grocon have said that workers felt intimidated by the presence of the Hells Angel at the site in mid-March. Steel was brought on to the site on the day the bikie was present, The Age has been told.

No they didn't. One jury refused to convict Gatto of the murder or manslaughter of Andrew Veniamin (quite rightly too, never enough evidence to convict).

But Gatto also also convictions for assualt, assault police, burglary and firearm possesion.

He's moved to the "establishment" level of gangsterism now. But he's still a gangster and a thug.

Surely a shop steward has to already work for the company. I don't blame Grocon for not wanting to have someone hand picked by the CFMEU on the site. I'm guessing a site specific allowance may also be part of the dispute.

Isn't this a condition that the Vic Govt has now outlawed for any future Govt tenders?

Pretty sure this type of thing is a significant factor in the insane cost blowout at their Desal plant; something like twenty to thirty percent of staff onsite are unproductive Union officials.

And if they insist on selecting separate stewards, why don't they use some of the millions of dollars of excess funds they receive every year, to employ them themselves?

Interestingly, they have preserved the original family home in aspic. It is the unremarkable 1950s, cream brick villa which fronts onto Station St. Last I saw of it, it was the only part of the compound without a ten foot-high, brick fence around it.

I used to go to that house every night, on my way home from school, to muck about with my schoolmate Rino Grollo. It was the first yard around a house I ever saw which was almost entirely paved with concrete. It made for a great surface for playing cricket. Luigi, Daniel's grandfather, was responsible. Hardly surprising, given he started out as a concreter. The only parts not paved were a few narrow strips out the back, in which Luigi used to grow his grapes.

People forget that Unions are there for the people. We have a 40 hour or less working week because of the Unions. Children go to school not work because of unions. Since the union thugs are illegally blocking the road, motorists should be allowed to ignore the road rules and run them over without charges been pressed. Could be a major money spinner for the state government. Heck I'd pay for seats to watch the fat thugs scramble out of the way.

I also support rich people. They should be able to trample on working people to improve their investment returns and I would like to help them out. Some of their wealth may trickle down to me one day.

I do however fail to see the relevance that the achievement of a 40 hour week (or even a 35 hour week) has to do with this case.
Just because unions have done some good and still have a role to play in society does not mean that they are correct in every case.
