I'm yet to meet a union member who I felt could negotiate my pay & conditions better than me.

I'd prefer to spend my $500 year elsewhere and let the sheep pay the wages of illiterate loud mouths.

Unfortunately for you, unless you're in a highly unionised workforce or a highly skilled one with a union just by another name (like a doctor or lawyer) your feelings are just plain wrong.

40 hour week, holidays etc are completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.

Actually 40 hour week, Sick and Annual Leave, Penalty Rates etc. etc. etc. and all the other myriad things that Unions have done for the worker are irrelevant to this issue. At least you may actually learn something about proper safety routines and how to complete jobs in the safest possible way.

Do it for a builder and the only thing you will learn is how to do the job in a way that makes them enough money and cut corners to save time which puts workers at risk of injury.

You should preface all your statements with IMHO as they are opinions and a long way from facts. You seem to disregard anyone with a degree and anyone that's studied o&s principles. Why? Was you mother run over by a group of stampeding OH&S reps while pregnant with you?

No but every one i have encountered has stared at me blankly when i ask them, as 1 example, how to justify to a client they need to spend $25k in repairs because some safety bloke says i cant work off a ladder. If i used the ladder the client would only have to spend $1k.

Of course when these situations pop up, we all agree to secretly break the rules and ignore the guy who has never used a ladder telling the guy who can balance on the apex on one foot while reaching and lifting, to use a more cumbersome ladder and rip an entire ceiling down.

All your "working at heights" course did for me was take away my insurance coverage and put me at fault if SHTF.

So these days instead of using a light and adaptable aluminium ladder, i have to carry around 4 different height heavy fibro platform ladders. Dont worry, you possibly have saved me from a fall. But you have also guaranteed me to do a back injury.

Enjoy sitting in your office. Dont forget to keep your hard hat clean and hi vis vest iron pressed.

I haven't been a Union Member for a long time. The only time I have has been in a closed-shop environment. I marched alongside Unionists against Howard's "Fair Work" (anything but) campaign. I"m skilled enough to negotiate my own deals and when left up to a Union I will usually do much worse.
I hate to disappoint you but I am not a safety officer. I don't even work in that industry.

So i guess you are just ignorant by choice then.

1. They are a laughing stock because they are hypocrits when confronted with a real dilemma that their very presence as created. Safety should be taught by a tradie to an apprentice. Not by someone who sat in a classroom and read a book.

It is not "my view". It is the same view held by most people forced to sit in a classroom and be spoken to like we are children.

We know more about how to do our job safely than the "teacher" does.

2. Theres nothing wrong with doing a job safely and i never inferred anything like that. The problem is, who is defining what is deemed safe? I gave an example just before where a safety bureaucrat has actually made my job MORE dangerous. I could give more, but you are too heavily brainwashed to believe this is whats happening.

3. I am going to get hurt because apparently a little card or a piece of paper is going to protect me from all things dangerous. No longer am i allowed to rely on common sense and logical experience. I have the dweeb with the shiny new hard hat to protect me now.
