Ch 7 Commentary - is it intervention time?

And? He's passionate and calls the game well. These guys on channel 7 are a joke.
Yelling about things isn’t calling the game well
Trying to hype ordinary pieces of play isn’t calling the game well

Watch a game called by a man called Joe Buck in the states and you’ll see a game called well, the closest we currently have to him in the AFL is Jason Bennett

Has Bruce retired?
Still recovering from watching Winx last weekend!
One can only hope that they start to phase Bruce out over the next year or 2.
Goes way over the top with his commentary and some of the things he says are cringworthy.
As already mentioned in this thread the rhetorical questions he asks are just appalling to listen to. "He might kick it from here. Can he? Can he? Does he? Does he?

The point people are missing is that it's not entirely their fault. The C7 execs want them to be this way. They want them to build stories around the game. They want hype.

It's just an extension of the tabloid nature of media in Australia. There's not a hint of depth or authenticity in any corner of the media these days and the AFL media train is just part of it. Pretty sad really.

Are you sure on this? They're all s**t dribblers away from ch7.

We know how bad they can be, but watching tonight they put me to sleep. Monotone, sparse, disinterested commentary.

Darcy, Brayshaw, and Richo....

It was a possible top 4 clash between the Cats and Power... and there was plenty of drama during the game. The Power were in the contest until the last 7 minutes.

Said it before and I'll say it again:

Turn the damn sound on the tv down! Listen to the radio or some records or cds or Spotify.

Seriously, give it a try. So much better.

Had been going downhill for a long time now.
Luke Darcy is shocking. Don't you just love the way he goes about it? How he has a media career is beyond me.

He has a media career because he is completely inoffensive*, uncontroversial and doesn't interfere with product placement.

* Actually, he's incredibly offensive at an intellectual level, but when did that ever concern the tabloid media?

I'm still fine with Fox. Have lived in NSW/QLD virtually all decade, so seen a lot of Fox games for the Giants and Suns, and the commentators suit that week-to-week constructive commentary.

The tipping point with 7 was the implementation of the Saturday night bros as of 2012. Brian Taylor, Darcy and Richo together was cringe-inducing from the get go. I've hardly listened to C7 commentary in the last few years, typically on mute with music or radio. Every single syllable on that channel has to be optimised and charged with superlative, controversy or beat-up to align itself as fully as possible with the advertising dollar. The dumbing down condescension at work there is entirely repellent, and infects the sports broadcasting product. A show like AFL Gameday is virtually unwatchable nowadays, fully converted to C7 brand content. C7 has got increasingly tough and rigorous, to the point where even MKR hardly bothers to show food in its commercials anymore.

Is that a yellow highlighter or a cigarette lighter?

One thing I love about watching soccer on SBS is the football pundits such as Craig Foster analyse the damn match, you can actually learn more about tactics and the game. People reckon that guy is a flog but his passion for talking tactics in intricate detail is always nice to watch IMO. They don’t spend much time joking about.

With AFL it’s all about the boys club banter, we don’t have “football pundits”. The problem is that the commentators get way too much airtime pre-game (and post-game), and they try to present their shows in a funny/bantering/entertaining way. They feel like they need to put their personalities forward, which transposes and continues on into the commentary of the match. It’s often hard to see any difference in their discourse with each other before the game where it’s light-hearted and during the game. It’s all bullshit self-absorbed back and forth tripe. The same s**t every week.

Why did we hardly ever see Commetti on the pre-game panel? Because he was a pure commentator who was there to commentate. Also, the whole structure of commentating has changed (for the bad) in the last 40 years. Channel 10 did a better job.

They hired Carey as a commentator, a man no one likes that has no charisma, intelligence or integrity purely because he could play footy. Channel 7 just don't have a clue. How do you regularly have commentators people absolutely hate and keep them for years? To some extent I get Taylor but a guy like Darcy?

At least Duck can offer an opinion. Unlike Mr Nice guy Richo who could never say a bad word about anyone.

I don't need to hear about people's back stories every single week. Darcy spent most of the game tonight talking about how brave someone is well or how awesome the umpires were communicating than actually calling the game

Darcy says the same s**t every time he commentates on a team. And repeats it at least twice during the game when a particular player gets the ball. So for Geelong it's

Menzel, he's had four knee reconstructions. Amazing how he's still playing the game.
Tom Stewart. Matty Scarlett found him while he was playing at South Barwon.
Blicavs, could have been an Olympic runner but elected to play football.
Zac Thuoey, he's Irish. Amazing how the Irish boys have learnt to play the game.

They might as well just replay his comments from the last time he commentated on that club.

James Brayshaw:
"Lindsay is a s**t c***t on the field but is the nicest man, a family man, you will ever meet".
"The Scott Brothers were pieces of s**t on the field, but two of the nicest people off field".

He just had to take every opportunity, even though he didn't need to, in order to defend anyone with a link to North.
