Yeah mate quality from you there, Jamie Elliot and Travis Varcoe two of our top five most important players don’t have a future at the club. Great commentary, hope you get a job at the pies
interesting first up post...

psst.. not sure Varcoe is a top 5 most important player though just quietly.

Varcoe's been piss poor in all but about two games this year (although he was looking pretty good on Friday before he got injured).

He's barely best 22, let alone top five most important.

Jamie? No argument there.

Yeah if Maynard is good to go this week then Appleby stiff but seems the obvious choice to make way.
Wells for Varcoe.

Considering the players we have out it's still a quality best 22

B - Langdon Dunn Sharenberg
HB - Maynard Howe Crisp
C - Phillips Pendlebury Sidebottom
HF - Wells Reid WHE
F - DeGoey Cox Stephenson
R - Grundy Adams Treloar
INT - Thomas Mayne Greenwood Daicos

Sounds from the written article the club put out regarding the injuries Maynard will come straight back in

I assume Wells will be named in the 22 and be a Sunday decision (unless something pops between now and then) but I am not sure who would make way for Maynard. Appleby and Mayne worked their way in nicely. Daicos might be the one but I'd like to see him get 5-6 games (at least) and get a good run at it

Maynard to a wing.

I would not drop Appleby either if Maynard has to come straight back in it should be on a wing,he has missed a month of football and was barely going before that.I very happy that it is looking harder and harder to fit players back in that can only be good thing.

I would drop Mayne before Appleby. I’m not trying to be a Mayne-basher. I think he’s played okay. However, I’m not a fan of Greenwood in the backline.

I rather Greenwood on the wing. Just not comfortable with Greenwood having control over the football.

Lel.
Varcoe is easily best 22.

Not sure

He has three goals for the whole season.
Lays just over 2 tackles a game.
Generally goes between 7 and 13 possessions.
Not a proper defender.
Not a forward.

He is the definition of a passenger. Adds nothing to us most games, but about once every four weeks he'll spark a couple of things by doing something really creative because he is genuinely talented. Unfortunately he doesn't do anything, anywhere near often enough.

However, he is a smooth mover and is an aesthetically pleasing player to watch, so for some reason is immune to any kind of criticism.

Why do you think he is easily best 22? Is it because he occasionally does some nice things? Occasionally isn't enough in my book.

Not every played should be judged on stats.

His defensive pressure is first rate, he is really good with his deft taps, and he makes the most of his possessions. I thought he was crucial against the Doggies before he got injured.

I actually think he is really important to our side. We have so many guys who get 25+ disposals. We are the highest disposal team in the comp. So we don't need another guy to win stacks of the ball. We need team-players like him who do a job. I agree though, it would be good to see him kick a few more goals.

Can sympathise with your position. But for mine Varcoe is the type of player you don’t judge on stats. His influence on games as compared to what the stat sheet shows is vastly different, kind of like Rioli but obviously not as good. We’re a better team with Varcoe in than out in my opinion.

Hopefully this link works for you all

If so, I think inside you'll find the reasons Varcoe is important.

He's generally average or below for most statistical measures, kicks, marks, handballs, etc.

But he is above average in all of the following:
One percenters
Tackles inside 50
Disposal efficiency
Kicking efficiency
Score Launches (involvements)

That's pretty critical to his role. More so than getting 30 touches a game. Particularly in a team that struggles going inside 50.

Varcoe is interesting. I thought he was physically cooked last year and the start of this year. Hes not. If there was a stat for making your opponents shit there pants when they have the ball then Varcoe is the league leader. He is like an angry wasp the way he flies directly at the ball carrier. Makes the other guys supposedly chasing look silly. I love that side of his game and it creates a lot of value to the team and makes him best 22 when he's doing it! Some games he just doesn't do it though.
But he is a much better player than just a chase and harrass player. It's frustrating he can't seem to get much ball anymore because he is one player I like to see with ball in hand. Wouldn't mind the coaches getting in his ear about holding back and getting more easy ball on the outside. It's robbing Peter a bit though I guess.

Feel for varcoe but better if he never plays again. Honestly wouldn't be sad if he, wells, Reid, fasolo, Elliot goldsack, never played again. Old or injury Prone players have no future in our current position in my opinion.

How do you replace their leadership?

Leadership on and off the field is an important element in success.

Thats why NM are doing well - they have SLOWLY culled their older players to ensure that enough leadership has been retained to support/guide the young guys.

Look at whats happened to St.K since Reiwolt and Montagna left.

Carl, are struggling for the same reason.

As long as the above guys are capable of competitive on field performance they stay IMO - unless their injuries are such that they are not capable of playing more than half a season, in which case I suspect they would retire.

Yep, agree. Varcoe has never been a huge possession getter but he's currently =18th league wide for goal assists and averaging just under 200 meters gained. Plays an important role. He, Stephenson and WHE are developing some nice chemistry.

Yeah incredible OP.

I feel like this is a real danger game for us like the Brisbane game was.
This game should be a lot easier than the Brisbane game.
Longer break, at home against a weakened opponent with our best 22 starting to come together.

I know it should be easier. Which is why I worry it won’t be.

My guess is selection will look like this tonight:

Out: Varcoe (hamstring)
In: Wells, Wills, Maynard, C.Brown, J. Blair

I suspect Appleby will juuuuuust hold his spot (would rather him than a rusty Maynard ghosting Walters around the park in a Toovey-like blanket role), Maynard will instead play three quarters in the VFL to blow the cobwebs out. There will be a mystery 'manage' or a typical Friday training injury to allow the in-form Wills to come in and provide some real grunt. Cal Brown to play VFL, Blair to be carry over emergency.
