Summer Ch7 wins Olympic rights

https://au.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/24630853/seven-wins-olympic-boradcast-deal/

"The Olympics are returning to the Seven Network for the first time since 2008.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded Channel Seven the Australian broadcast rights for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020.

Kerry Stokes' network will also broadcast the Winter Games in PyeongChang in 2018 and the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014.

Seven has acquired broadcast rights on all media platforms."

can't be worse than ch10 (or can it?)

Foxtel. Only choice for the Olympics. I'll buy it again - it was pretty good in 2012.

I suppose Ch 7 could use all 3 channels they have (and possibly put on a few more), but then where would they show the repeats of 1980's British sit-coms?

The IOC put a price on the rights ($US 200 million for next 3 games) that put 9 and 10 out of the market right off the bat because of the sunk costs and Foxtel weren't happy with the price also and were happy to wait to form a joint bid from 9 or 10 so that never came. That left 7 and they just low balled the IOC and got it on the cheap.

Would expect it over all 3 of their channels plus digital apps and maybe even get SBS and their channels involved again like last time. Also keep in mind that legislation has changed regarding multi channels since the London Olympics, yet alone Beijing.

It is understood talks are already underway with several potential partners in the delivery of the games, including Foxtel. The pay-TV platform has previously partnered with Nine and set a high benchmark with its multi-channel and app-based coverage of the winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2012 summer Olympics from London.

The last time Seven partnered on multi-channel coverage of the games was with the public broadcaster SBS, for the 2008 Beijing Games.

Seven CEO Tim Worner told Fairfax Media that Seven's "screen real estate" during the lifetime of the Olympic deal meant they may not need a co-broadcasting partner, but that "around 150 hours of content on any given day [means] there will be many more opportunities than ever before".

Worner confirmed Seven was talking "prospective partnerships" with a number of potential partners. He said Foxtel, "with whom we have a great partnership on AFL, will be the first people we speak to".

So they are looking to talk to Foxtel and other channels such as SBS. Smart move

Should mean a good mix of coverage if that is pulled off

In 2008 it was Ch 7 for swimming and Aussie stuff - SBS for team sports where they showed a team game in full, eg a handball match or volleyball match or hockey match was shown in full without switching to another sport. SBS mainly were only allowed to show non Aussie teams games.

Stokes somehow got involved in 50% ownership of Fox Sports via Packers Consolidated Media Holdings around the time of Beijing but in late 2012 the ACCC, shareholders and the federal court all approved News Corp taking over completely CMH's 50% share in Fox Sports over Sevens and Stokes bid for it. I suspect Seven wont use Foxtel's 8 channels for Rio but might change after that.

9 and Foxtel's 8 channel arrangement for London was great with i think Foxtel not being allowed to show the opening and closing ceremonies live being the only restriction on Foxtel.

Can see 7 + 7mate having 24/7 coverage, SBS2 having 24/7 coverage and SBS1 having some coverage + internet pay streaming service being rolled out.

Thanks I thought they won them about 6 weeks ago, but that must have been the deadline for the bids.

Don't know about this comment. There is not a lot of love between 7 and Foxtel.

They don't waste time do they? They've already bunged the Olympic logo on the bottom of the 7 logo.

.... the Olympics .... are home .... on SEVEN ....

Argo f*** yourself

Was flicking thru the channels and watched the X factor for a minute saw the Olympic rings under the 7 logo and thought of this thread.

Bruce McAvaney would already be locked in as host/caller of Seven's Olympic Games team, but who else would join McAvaney as either hosts or commentators?

However if there is two people who I think would be ideal to call the Olympic soccer tournament for 7, it would be Simon Hill, and the best in the business, Martin Tyler.

He'll double up and do Swimming and Athletics. Never has been the host of the coverage when 7 last had and was always their athletics caller before taking on swimming as well in Athens when Dennis Cometti moved to Channel 9 and stayed for Beijing when Dennis was left behind to call the AFL by himself which would be likely to happen again in 2016. He also did the Swimming world feed for the IOC in London.

Basil will do the Rowing/Canoe events. Hosting is an issue as they have lost Sandy Roberts to Fox Footy and Matt White to Channel 10

If Foxtel in 2012 used the World Feed, then that isn't going to happen.

It will be the normal Freelancers and Channel 7 staff plus whatever of the World Feed they decide to use

Well you can lock in Johanna Griggs and Hamish McLaughlan for starters and you can bet they're grooming Luke Darcy for a shot as well.

Bruce was a daytime or primetime host for week 1 of Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney before the athletics started. Then for Athens and Beijing he got the swimming gig + athletics and dropped hosting duties as per the above post..

For Rio the live coverage will be between approx 9pm EST and 12noon so their main hosts will be between thise hours and the "plebs" in the other hours. to do the puff pieces and interviews and host the replays.

It would be nice if they found some new talent. A bit like 7 Adelaide did in 1980 when a young Bruce in the Adelaide studio left the network hosts from Moscow for dead. Only Adelaide viewers got to see him but he was brilliant.

He moved to 10 in Melbourne in 1983 and 10 then owned by Murdoch had the rights for 1984 LA games. Bruce only did the athletics - no hosting - but the hosting was so bad - Kerry Anne Kennerly, her breakfast collegue big guy with the glasses Gordon ???? John Newcombe etc that they were roundly bagged and Murdoch was pissed off. When the athletics started, Bruce showed them all up and Murdoch doubled his pay and locked him in for the 1988 Olympics straight away as 10 had the rights for Seoul.

If 7 have half a brain they will get Peter Doneghan involved - maybe even hosting.

He was brilliant doing the athletics for 9 in London. I didnt miss Bruce one bit as he did such a great job. Did the same great job for 10 at the Comm Games last week. Like Bruce he does his homework and knows his stuff and more importantly knows about the athletes competing both main contenders and outside chances.

He must have covered about 8 different sports for 7 back in 2008 In Beijing.

My gut feeling is that Bruce McAvaney, Johanna Griggs, Hamish McLachlan, David Koch and quite possibly either Peter Mitchell or Jennifer Keyte will be the on-air hosts. But what about getting either Tim Webster or Garry Wilkinson away from Foxtel's Sky News service to join Seven's 2016 Olympic Games coverage?

Donegan is Freelance so he'll get a gig doing something at the games. Bruce should do the Swimming and let Donegan do the Athletics but I doubt Bruce will give up the Athletics. I think Donegan called the Diving in Beijing so maybe get him to do the Swimming. You also know Dave Colbert will be involved in the athletics.

Griggs will do a Hosting role, while Hamish and co will be left behind for the AFL coverage. Can see them only sending over Bruce and Basil from the AFL side of things. As for the "Sunrise" hosts doing any host of the coverage, I doubt it. They haven't before other than to send Sunrise as a show over there which would be the extent of things again.

Say that the showpiece event of the 2016 Rio Olympic athletics, the men's 100m final, will be at 8:30pm Brazil time, what time would it be shown in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth on the Seven Network?

Approx 10-30am est but you can check at www.timeanddate.com

Its why Sunrise hosts wont get a big gig in Rio as the timezone is wrong. It worked well for Beijing as Beijing was sleeping and no events when Sunrise was on.
