We wanted to keep Shaun.
True but there were issues and one big one was his knee. We didnt want to give him the length and value he wanted for his contract because our medical teams concern over the stability of his knee. So that adding to his other concerns, he went looking around. His first 2 years at the hawks he wasnt great as his knee caused him some problems. But after that Andrew Russell and the Hawks medical team have done a magnificent job.

Even so. He's no Boak/Gray/Wingard/Wines.

His bloated reputation and inconsistent performances epitomised everything wrong with the late Williams-era.

So he is a bit inconsistent - big deal he is no stranger there - but the last 4 or 5 years he has delivered in plenty of big moments when it has counted in September and plenty of times in home and away games. You cant always drive a Ferrari at 300km/hr but sometimes its nice to know the power is there, despite them being a bit temperamental for how much they bloody cost.

For a player who was considered to be our best player or thereabouts his overall output was woeful.

When was he considered to be our best player? Maybe our most skillful the last 3-4 years but I never thought he was our best. He had a great 2006 - the year Tredders did his last knee reco, but I always rated Chad our best player after Tredders went down in 2006. And I rated Lade a more important/valuable player than Shaun. It was Lade who usually feed him.

2009 when he left, wider perception was that we were losing our last remaining jewel and that it was a crying shame to lose him.

His role at Hawthorn suits him. Coasting about while genuine stars do the heavy lifting.

The fact that he has been able to do that has probably helped his knee issue no end, but he can certainly shine in the big games.

Lade/Burgoyne, there's no more consistent commentary than this.

Yeah I guess that's fair enough after the 2009 season finished. Chad was to turn 30 a couple of months after the season, Tredders knee issues, Lade and Peter had just retired, Kane winning all those B&F's and top 3's was a great team player rather than a great star player, Boak, Gray, Hoff, Hartlett and Jacko were years away from their peak, Krak had stagnated, Motlop and Pearce were up and down like yo-yo's, Sal was regularly injured, Ebo and Dom not in his class etc.

I was like 13 at this time so my judgement wasn't exactly tip top but what a massive underrating of Shaun. Even now, he is one of those stars at Hawthorn, not a guy letting the rest carry him.

I regard Shaun Burgoyne very highly , he's a utility a bit like Hamish Hartlett , super talented but doesn't dominate very often but plays his role beautifully .

Shaun was touring clubs like Essendon and Melbourne when he quit, so he definitely did have some value.

The problem was that we really blew the draft picks that we got for him.

On another note, I don't really know why the club so badly wanted Jay Nash. We were rumoured to have pursued him for like 4 years in a row and when we finally got him, we delisted him after 1 season.

We can't judge Shaun on his output now vs. his output towards the end of his time here. He was flakey at best in the last moments of his career at Port. He is a much better player at Hawthorn with a much better supporting cast.

We blew 9 - Moore, but the upgrade from 24 to 16 to get Jasper I dont think is a blown pick

Maybe because he was built like Geoff Parker. ;)

At the end of his career, will this Chad end up better than the other Chad?
He wont be as versatile but after 4 years on an AFL list this one is a long way in front at a comparable stage. but Chad being a KPP/Utility it took 6 years before he hit his straps at 23 and then had a big 5 or 6 years before he got that spiral bone break to his finger that has undone many other players over the years.

Shaun suits Hawthorn to a tee because he doesn't get tagged and isn't relied upon to do any heavy lifting.

He was simply at his best for us in the wrong era. He was an absolutely brilliant role player in 2004 and did a very good defensive job for us. He clearly has the talent to be an elite midfielder, but too often he was taken out of games by average taggers. Boak occasionally cops shit because his output is reduced by a tagger, but it's like chalk and cheese. Boaky never drops his head and works himself into games and has an impact. Shaun didn't quite have the workrate.

Still, I hope we see a bit of him around the club once he retires.

Barring a career destroying injury, Wingard will be considered better than Cornes, and quite easily. That's taking nothing away from Cornes who was a champion, but sometimes I think we don't appreciate just how special a player we have in Wingard.

He's already matched his number of All Australian guernseys with another decade of footy at least to play, still nowhere near his prime.
