Exciting young wingman Callum Chambers is out of the West Coast side to play Carlton on Saturday at Optus Oval.
Chambers admitted himself to hospital early on Friday morning with abdominal pains, and was kept in overnight for observation.
He has been released, but doctors are conducting further tests on him in an attempt to diagnose the cause of the problem.
West Coast has included Michael Braun in the travelling party, and will decide overnight whether he or Andrew Williams will replace Chambers in the final 22.
The bad news didn’t stop there for the West Coast – “technical difficulties” caused the cancellation of their early morning flight to Melbourne, forcing them onto a later plane and costing them the opportunity to have a training run at Optus Oval, tomorrow’s venue.
Backman Rowan Jones, who finished third in West Coast’s best and fairest last year, said before the team left for Melbourne that the delay and consequent lack of a run at Optus wasn’t a problem for the team.
“Usually if we travel on a Friday before a Saturday game we will train in Melbourne because we train on Fridays, but I don’t think it will affect us that much,” Jones said.
“When we play on Sundays we travel on Saturday and don’t train, so we’ll just have a walk and a stretch and get into it.
“We’ve played a couple of practice games there (Optus Oval) this year and had a couple of wins, so I think most of the guys there and are used to it.”
West Coast is yet to break their travelling duck this season, but Jones says the team is looking to this weekend to claim their first away win of the season proper.
“We’re focussed on getting a win this game, and hopefully going into the break with a 7-5 record and having two weeks off with a win under our belt.”
AH man!!!! Why does this sort of stuff always have to happen to us!
