Definitely! I know we are extremely poor at clearance work- that breaks down to "pretty bloody terrible" at centre clearances and "absolutely atrocious" at the stoppages.

It'll probably be a dumb rule like whoever touches it last gives the free to their opponent. That means they'll ring the ground with 20 more boundary umpires, complete with cap-mounted cameras, to make sure those decisions are correct.

JOEL Selwood remains the undisputed king of winning head-high free kicks but his Geelong barely makes the top four on the 2015 “too high” ladder.

The top team is not West Coast, which has had the spotlight on them in recent seasons over its “dropping the knees” tactics to draw free kicks.

Richmond is the new No.1 when it comes to winning free kicks for high contact this year, a total of 90 after 12 rounds — 10 more than the next team, Brisbane, according to Champion Data.

CD have produced some interesting goal kicking stats. Interestingly, the Cats rank 18th (Dead LAST) for goals kicked by our forwards/rucks, while Motlop is the #1 goal kicking midfielder in the competition, with 17 goals. Dangerfield, equal 2nd with 13 goals, is looking a more juicy prospect every week.
(the article claims that this is up until R12, though why anyone would publish stats including split round data (where some teams have played 2 games over the 3 bye rounds, and others have played 1 game) is beyond me. Anyway, here is the article, FWIW...

TYC, do they leave players in the classification they gave them at the start of the season, eg "midfield", regardless of where they play later in the season?
I only ask because 8 of Motlop's 17 goals have actually come in the last 3 games since he moved back to spending most of his time in the forward line.

Fred, I don't follow the rankings that closely. I do see at the beginning of the year that they make a big thing about players changing ranking from the previous year but haven't seen them change rankings mid-year.

I would assume that this sort of thing would happen often- there'd be a quite a few mids that rest forward, likewise quite a few forwards that rotate through the middle.

Whenever Geelong needs someone to step up, Joel Selwood wins the next centre clearance and boots an inspirational running goal.

But the Cats' perceived over-reliance on their clearance king is part myth.

The skipper's the main man – especially for big moments - but emerging star Mark Blicavs' work at centre bounces is also crucial to the Cats' scoring power.

Geelong is the No.1 ranked team in the AFL for scoring from centre clearances, converting 28 per cent of the time when they win possession in the middle.

And it's Blicavs who makes the biggest difference (+10 centre clearance differential) when he attends the bounce, according to Champion Data.

Geelong scores nearly one-fifth of its points (17.6 per cent) directly from the middle, only behind Adelaide (17.8), which relies heavily on star combo Sam Jacobs and Patrick Dangerfield.

The Crows are +25 for clearance differential with Jacobs in the ruck directing the ball to his teammates.

If Dangerfield (39 centre clearances) were to head back home and play for the Cats, he could form a near-unstoppable combination with Blicavs (18) and Selwood (44).

I agree. You add an in-form Mitch Duncan to that group (Selwood, Paddy, & Blitz) and we have an A grade midfield again with a second string of Guthrie, Gregson, Murdoch, Lang, Bartel, Kelly, Stokes etc. We just need to get our ruck right.

I was more referring to the people that actually lack a heap of footy knowledge posting stats in isolation in a way of appearing to be knowledgeable

I have no issues with very good posters like CE and lana who use stats heavily as they have the knowledge base to dissect and use them properly

Champion Data produces a huge amount of data on every AFL player and, from that information, every team.
A lot of the data is not available to the public, though the media and the clubs are privy to the information collected by CD.

What I'd like to do here is post any articles in the media that include stats that are not readily available from the AFL website, Footywire, or AFL Tables, as well as any articles that refer to comparative data, etc., even if those stats are something that we can work out for ourselves using the data online- e.g team rankings for clearances, contested possessions, etc.

There are a few posters here who, like myself, are interested in CD stats, and we often use stats to back up or refute an argument. I thought if we could post in this thread, any articles that we found, anyone who was interested in reading the information could easily access it.

Maybe, along with the link, post the date of the article and a quick summary, so we can search for it later.
