Hello all,

thought this was important enough to not allow it to be buried in another thread: Champion Data are looking for people in SA to attend SANFL matches for stats.

https://www.sportspeople.com.au/sp/position/PositionDisplay.asp?ID=41008

Position Title SANFL - Casual / Part-Time Crew - 2017 Season

Work Type

Casual
Salary Not stated
Location Adelaide, SA, Australia
Detailed Description

We now require highly motivated people to join our casual crew in SA for the 2017 SANFL season. The roles include:

  • AT-GROUND CALLER (call player statistics to at-ground capture operator)
  • AT-GROUND CALLER SUPPORT (assist Ground Caller with call)
  • AT-GROUND CAPTURE (capture all statistics called by the at-ground caller)

Reporting to the AFL Department:

The At-Ground Caller will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of AFL is essential
  • Clear and concise communication skills

The At-Ground Support will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of AFL is essential
  • Clear and concise communication skills

The At-Ground Capture will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules of AFL is essential
  • High IT skills including internet connectivity, basic networking and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with Windows environments
  • Clear and concise communication skills

I see that thorough knowledge of the rules of AFL is essential, which rules out most of you ;) and also clear and concise communication skills, which probably rules out the other half.

Mods, if not appropriate, merge with another thread, and go to hell

If they need someone with an understanding of the game, how the hell do they record stats in the NEAFL then?

To see a bit what it's like -

We need a BF plant to get access to the main CD database. I'd do some terrible things to get my hands on that stuff :p

You and me both. I was actually reading on reddit that apparently in baseball the collection of data became a undertaking by fans who wanted it for various fantasy leagues etc. I was actually half considering if it was possible to start a similar effort in the AFL, if we'd have enough people interested and willing to take the time to collect the data we could. Of course baseball has a lot less to record than AFL

It's easy to do in a stop start game like baseball. Much more difficult in a game like AFL, especially when there's things that come down to interpretation, rather than having everything be a clear cut call. I might call something a tackle, you might not, I might say that disposal was ineffective, you might say etc.

After seeing that video, I'd hate to be a Champion Data caller or capturer. Watching a footy game (which is supposed to be recreational rather than frenetic desk work) having to enter all those stats so quickly, with your job on the line if you make just a little mistake? Bugger that! I guess my opinion reflects my general disinterest in maths and numbers.

You'd have to do it via replays, no other way to do it as a fan. You wouldn't be able to collect a lot of the positional or matchup data though.

I've done some stat collecting for my local footy club (just basics like kicks, marks, handballs etc). even doing that is insanely difficult

in saying that, I would love to do that for a living

What is the difference between a disposal and a possession? Please provide an example of each stat and don't use the words disposal or possession in your answer.

What a terribly worded question. How does one answer it without using the words.

"one is getting the ball, the other is getting rid of it.

Example1: Player gets the ball after it was handballed to them
Example2: Player kicks the ball

Which one is which? I AM NOT ALLOWED TO TELL YOU!"

Why can't you use the word in your answer? it would make the answer a lot less ambiguous.

quite clearly it isn't the job for you then, you need to be able to think on your feet without questioning

If you're interested have a read of Moneyball. It's a brilliant book that details this, the movie is okay, the book is amazing.

It's on my to read list. I am trying to move into data science so would be quite interesting I think.

I'd just reply with this link.

I possessed the ball when I marked it, then disposed of it with a kick to a team mate.
