Last year, Buttler returned to England during the IPL to play in a preparation series against Pakistan ahead of last year's World T20. Predictably, the first game at Headingley was washed out. As the rain was falling, Buttler spoke with Ian Ward, Stuart Broad and Eoin Morgan in the Sky Sports pod. During this chat, Buttler, in his England kit speaking in his capacity as England captain said "International cricket should never clash with the IPL", sounding like a man who would prefer to play in the IPL than captain his country. I think he would have been sacked as captain there and then if he was Australian.

He's been an incompetent captain for a while so this is no surprise whatsoever.

His career numbers are outstanding but it’s been a fairly lean spell for a while for Buttler. Averaging 27 in the last six series (24 games, 2 years, he didn’t play any ODI cricket in 2024). Averaged 15 in the World Cup.

He’ll be 37 by the time the next World Cup comes around, it’s a long way away. I’ll be surprised if he plays any more ODI cricket after tomorrow. Think it’s time for him to go to all the T20 franchises and really cash in

I hadn't planned on going to the match but on the Friday I decided to check what tickets had become available, and got 1 for ground level, row 8 in as was then the Great Southern Stand - so directly in line with the stumps at McCullum's end to see Starc send the bail flying
