Champions Trophy squad

Picking JFM lol are they serious? He's barely in the top 50 cricketers in the country what a joke. Rest of the squad is ok given our lack of options.
I really don't see it with him at all. I've seen him bat for years now and he's a slogger with a very poor technique but a decent eye. It's come off occasionally but he's going to be gone from even State/BBL level within 4-5 years unless he changes his game completely.

Announced by Cricket .com.au
Australia Champions Trophy squad: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa. Travelling reserve: Cooper Connolly.

Probably wasn't much belief in the next guys up before the Sri Lanka series, there'd be a lot less trust now.

Not sure what the answer is. Think Inglis will have to open with Head. Probably Smith, Carey, Marnus, Maxwell and Hardie after that. There will be a lot of pressure on the two at the start to get off to fliers because there isn't a heap of firepower in the middle and could get stuck

Just anyone but Short and JFM really

At least the rest of the squad play proper cricket I guess.

Pitches are likely to be very flat and I can see them talking themselves into opening with one of them.

Don't think it would be the right call. Pretty decent sample size now suggesting that they are not at the level of international cricket

I'd have something like this. The bowlers are a bit interchangeable but the top 6 is the way I'd go.

Head
Carey
Smith
Inglis
Marnus
Maxwell
Hardie
Abbott
Ellis
Zampa
 Johnson

Not Picked
Short
JFM
Dwarshuis
Sangha
Connolly (emergency)

No one is a bigger fan of Matt Short than me but he is running out of chances.

I think that is the 11 that has to play. I don't think any of the reserves belong in that side. Might be a chance for Sangha if the pitch suits. I'd prefer Inglis to open and Carey in the middle order but that's the team

we haven't won a Champions Trophy match since 2009! crazy but true! (although a few games rained out)

I loved that tournament - it helped me convert a $100 free bet I won via Sportsbet fantasy footy comp into $1,700 when I put it all on Ponting to be the highest run scorer of the tournament

Couldn't tell you much else about it other than that

Such a yuck squad. The all rounder obsession is doing my head in.

I might be a bit old school but this is how I would like to structure the team

Bat
Bat
Bat
Bat
Bat - Break glass bowler if the A/R stinks
Bat (w/k - can bat anywhere in the lineup)
All-Rounder (Who you can get 10 out of most of this time)
Bowl
Bowl
Bowl
Bowl

However if you have Abbott/Hardie as a bowl 10 over bowl you have to play more all-rounders unfortunately

I'm struggling to pick an 11 because there's so many duds

Head
Inglis (poor record but maybe opening can reinvigorate him and there's no one else)
Marnus (can't hold the bat but there's no one else)
Smith (been average in ODIs for two years)
Maxwell (needs some runs too just quietly)
Carey
Dwarshuis
Ellis
Zampa

These are my locks

Hardie probably sneaks in there and then there's one spot left

It's pretty dire

To be fair... We've played 6 games, 3 NR and 3 losses in that time because it's been 8 years since the last.
