The discussion was about defensive running, you are correct, but it really should focus of 2 way running which is more pertinent to the weakness our side has.

Hipwood and Daniher are forwards playing up - they run up as the mids run back defensively.

Mitch works in that structure

Also, we sit just shy of the centre on the lower level and have Mitch on our side of the field. Many times Mitch was in position, unmarked waving his arms likes crazy man for ball. Just because he isn’t used, doesn’t mean he isn’t playing well.

On the losing his footing when her goes for tackles. When it’s pinch situation, where the opposition is going to get the kick away, he does launch himself and lose his feet. I’m pretty sure he knows he is going to fall, but the tackle attempt is to put the player off his kick. And if does work sometimes. It’s a 1% play.

Do we think Coleman will come straight back to half back and Zorko will go back into the middle ?
I think barring mass injuries in the midfield, Zorko will be permanent on the half back flank, especially considering how well he went on the weekend, some in the media saying he could be AA backline if this form continues, DK going on about how he completely transforms our transition game. He's back there to stay.

That surprises me, IMO he hasn't played at that level, also to my eye he appears to get caught out positionally 1 v 1 defensively regularly.

No offence, but other than KPD’s, since when does AA selection ever come down to someone’s defensive capabilities.😂

I do think that come the back end of the year (finals) if we are seriously struggling in the midfield against a particular opponent he will be thrown in there to mix things up a bit for periods within games.

I do agree though, in that, if a team wanted to shut him out of a game, due to his lack of pace at the moment it would be quite easy to do.
Like Geelong did last week.
He has quite quickly become an important part of our ball movement out of our backline but I do think if teams put someone on him he would be quite easy to take of the game.
Don’t tell them that though.

But equally, when Coleman is back in they will have all three of Rich, Zorko and Coleman to deal with and tagging half backs is not a productive thing to do in footy.

Completely agree.

Unless we are getting completely smashed in the midfield I can see Zorko playing half back permanently. Firstly he still can't properly run at the moment. He or someone at the club mentioned about midfielders being played at halfback to prolong their careers - that would be worthwhile. See Luke Hodge. Zorko is a very quick decision maker, and can kick great passes off 1 step, catching defence out before they can set up. This is how we will score more off turnovers, or open up more corridor plays.

As for the defensive side. Yes it is important he does his role. But if Bulldogs can cover for Caleb Daniel back there, we can do it for Zorks.

We’re playing with one to many small/medium forwards at the moment, who aren’t impacting through the midfield enough.

Cameron
McCarthy
Rayner
Bailey
Lohman/Cockatoo

And we’re playing with three wingers.

McCluggage
Robinson
Ah Chee

This is leaving us very light on through the middle, with only three inside mids.

Neale
Lyons
Berry

We really do need to be dropping a small/medium forward or a wing to bring another mid (ahem; Robertson) in.
My thoughts are finding a spot for our inside mids forward. We seem to rest them on bench so rotate them there.
Neale (84% TOG%) , Lyons (74%) we normally do not rest forward so off the bench more
Berry (79%) (Bad shoulder) we used to rest forward although not at the moment.
Same as Robbo and Clugga seems bench or on rather then swap with a forward.

Interesting Mitch 69% and Rayner 68% are spending a bit of time on the bench.
Which for Rayner/Robbo will effect disposals stats and then people say they got X only drop them.

Not sure times in middle or wing.
Rayner/Bailey seemed more time on ball then Cameron, Linc or Lohman.

Tangentially related to the discussions about midfield balance, I found this site recently which is a good resource for looking at centre bounce attendances, if it's accurate - Centre Bounce Attendances

There's some other info on there about kick-ins and ruck contests too.

Oh man that really shows why we got Fort. We were so reliant on Oscar last year.

Also suggests why Cockatoo was dropped. We do have a lot of small/medium forwards and to do so they need to be able to rotate into the middle. Rayner and Bailey are doing a little bit Cockatoo wasnt.

Would love to see the wing numbers as well. Afl article suggests Robbo has been nearly 100% of his time on the wing. But I am curious with the split of Ah Chee, McCluggage and others

Would love to know what the coaches are looking for from Dev Rob in the twos before they give him a run.
I want to see Dev get a run as well but it's not like he's been dominant in the reserves so far, Lohman had probably been our most impactful and he got a game, Berry, Matho, Prior and Lester have probably all been better than Dev so far as well, granted Dev hasn't played as much as those guys. I get everyone wants Dev in but if he's not going to play significant midfield time he's not the best option.

Dev is currently playing the same role as Berry in my opinion. Run with player who can go through the middle and do defensive roles. I've not seen him given the license to go and be the "find your own ball" mid yet, so I have no idea what he'd look like in that capacity.

If Zorko can get fit and we have those 3 dishing it out that's lethal.

The defensive aspects of Zorko's game are to me a bit of presumption because he's always been a very smart player and he knows how defence and structures need to work. I'd wait until he was able to run properly before passing judgement on that.

I'd like to find a permanent spot for Sharp on the wing. Need to give him a bunch of games so he's ready for second half of this season. Can rebound with ease and has the tank to gut run, which everyone knows. If it means Mitch has to make way then so be it. Mitch as sub would work with Sharp taking the spot in best 22.

Good to see people starting to get around Jarrod Berry and recognising his improving form and tremendous potential. As his confidence improves, so will his performance. He is only 24 years old and I think he is only going to go from strength to strength, developing into a Jarrod Lyons type mid. He certainly doesn’t shirk the big assignments and will learn from the big names he has played on. Fagan’s faith in him is a big part of his improvement and is testament to his skill as a coach. I will always remember Berry as a 21 year old going head to head with Dustin Martin and the Richmond midfield in our clash at the MCG in Rd. 23 2019. He got brushed off a couple of times by Martin, but who hasn’t. He had a real crack and showed great character. Does have some clear improvement areas, particularly in relation to his disposal by foot and decision making, but just imagine how good he is going to be as a 27 or 28 year old. He’s already a vital part of the team, but he will be pulling midfields apart in three or four years.

Changes v Suns? More midfield minutes for Jarrod Berry.

Looks like Chol will be out you would think?

Adams on Casboult will be a clash of the titans, two big brutes going at it :p

But it will be our small defenders who will have their hands full. Starc on Rankine? Gardiner on Rosas and Answerth on Ainsworth? (tbh probably switch starc and answerth)

Berry could run with Miller maybe.

They like to perform against us, but they fall off and we get stronger as the game goes on.

Should be a QClash to remember!
