Ahhhh.....the old reverse psychology Bonce. We're onto you. Can't pull one over us.

10/10 for trying though.
I wish. We've been trash apart from the odd quarter here and there and our forward line has been carried by Stringer.

The problem we have if we lose the stoppage it gets out quiet quickly, we’re actually one of the worst stoppage teams in the comp and it comes down to having to many ball players in the centre..
if you keep going with the same strategy, you’ll keep getting the same result.
So having a defence first minded person, at every stoppage becomes a must, when youve got Cunnington or Higgins in there.

Was just about to post similar. We’re getting scored against from stoppages way too easily. Shaw calls himself a defensive coach so hopefully he’s been drilling them with stoppage setups this week

I think if Atley and Pittard can become lock down defenders, we might be surprised and shock a few teams, as they can move the ball quickly if teams don’t pay any attention to them, it also means that we could free up some of the other guys skill sets.
I’m not to worried about Kyrons 1 on 1 work. He seems to get it.
Murphy is the one that I’m scared about, but as I said if he, and Hayden are both in the team at the end of the year, means they’ve proven reliable, than I’ll be a happy man.
True. I don't mind Pittard as a lockdown defender, he's shown at his best he's more than capable both 1-on-1 and floating across as a spare man, it's about whether he can produce on a consistent basis.

Atley, on the other hand, is a real enigma. He seems to have all the attributes except for a football brain. I've suggested playing him as a wing to allow him to use his wheels and just play on instinct. I've also seen suggestions about putting him down forward like we did a couple of years back to reasonable effect. And now you're proposing him as a lockdown defender. Personally I've got no idea what would work best, maybe we should just try him in all of those positions and see which one seems to suit him the most. I'm firmly in the keep Atley camp, I really think it's about nailing down a consistent position where he can use his attributes (height, speed etc.) without having to think too much.

I'm also worried about Murphy's defending, but given you've said Kyron's defensive ability shouldn't be a problem, I'm happy to trust that judgment and try them both in the team. GWS have used that sort of half-back line very effectively with Whitfield, who has next to no defensive attributes, and Williams, who offers a lot both ways. Not saying Murphy and Hayden will reach anywhere near the heights of those two, but they can be our poor man's version of the combination. Alternatively, we could go hard after Williams himself. He is the exact type of player we need right now.

Why not? He's shown he's up to it. Would much rather him as a tagger than Kyron, who actually has something to offer on the offensive end

I see lmac as purely a negater whereas Jacobs made his opponent go with him too... even got on the scoreboard etc.... happy to be proved wrong but prefer lmac out of the centre

I mean, yeah, it's risky to use a bloke as a pure negator. If LMac gets given a bath by his opponent then he turns into an offensive and defensive liability. But his job on the Bont really got me thinking. Bont's one hard man to tag, and LMac did it with aplomb. My take is use him as a negator on an opposition star, if it doesn't work and his opponent starts carving him up then turn him back into a h2h mid like normal.

You’ve pretty much nailed my sentiments, Atley is reliable, rarely beaten one on one and never injured. I think he falls in the category of people expecting to much of him. He has a position in the backline, if there’s other which are more creative types around him.
I would love a Z.Williams or anther similar running out of our backline but we simply don’t have the cattle. Maybe his brother Marley can help convince him to come across.

So Stringer is critical to your lineup eh? Our opponents can't win without their best players on the park, no?

North Melbourne: hold my beer

I'm not saying you guys aren't missing key players.

But we have a horrendous track record of a) covering key players and b) winning when (seemingly) everyone thinks we should win.

Meh wasn't thinking of anyone missing for us tbh.

But nothing says "weapons down boys" to a North side more than the opposition missing one or two key players.

Want to see some casualty ward viewing, on the updated injury list I just counted 9 of our starting team on it..
Such a strange season with every team pretty much in the same boat.

It's more that we seem to make unremarkable players look like superstars. See Josh Bruce last week.

I'm optimistic that we may surprise but not holding my breath.
