Finlayson was a defender. A crap defender they threw forward thinking maybe it's something he could be good at.
No one is as crap as Jonas, having said that if you were ever gonna swing him down there you'd train him at least a little bit with the defenders pre-season for that possibility. It's why forwards usually look garbage when thrown back out of circumstance.

Can we throw Finlayson down back and keep Lord in? Didn’t Finlayson used to play down back?l
He was playing half back flank in his rookie year. Not what we need and he is our highest scoring forward.

In short, I don't think we can turn our performance around this week

thus I would go in with the same stupid selection and focus on preserving the confidence of the squad

Another couple yesterday...
He has been in the wrong place, wrong time half a dozen times this year and paid a brutal price each time. Sometimes you get away with it, but this year he has copped full force knees in the back which wouldn't be allowing the original injury from the McGovern pre season game to heal to 100%. I'm saying that this is the main reason for an ordinary year output wise. I also believe he has runs on the board and shouldn't be required to throw in the towel yet...I can't see how Burgoyne / Mead / Sinn have passed him by just yet.

In a game where a large number of our players seemed to want to cruise around a few here want to have a go at a player who at the very least was willing to put his body on the line.

At some stage he needs to be getting less game time but right now he’s still in our best 22. As per above there is no one that is screaming out to replace him.

I think we are being extremely harsh on Lord ... yes he missed shots BUT he took some great marks and contested well.
Had he kicked straight we would still lost but 5goals to Lord and we would cheering loud for him.
He took 3 marks last night. Two of them were very good. That is the best that can be said of his performance.

He got one free kick that should have gone the other way. Of5 shots at goal, 2 he couldn't even direct within the points posts. Currently he has had 18 shots at goal. 7 points, 6 goals, 5 out on the full or didn't make the distance from less than 50 metres out. The hypothetical 'if he kicked 5 goals' would have required such a massive improvement in his kicking that it is a joke to even suggest it.

Burton should point blank be in the team every week.. He should be playing forward even if he doesn't play as a defender. However the disarray of our back 6 last night shows that he needs to be in our back 6. We rely on our defenders playing as a unit and too often last night they looked like 6 individuals struggling against an avalanche. Injury, unwarranted changes, and an uncharacteristically bad game by Bergmann led to a Carlton attack, without McKay, making us look second rate.

As bad as Jonas was, he was lucky. If McKay had played out the game he only would have been shown up further.

The selections, and the gameday performance, smacked of a team that were looking two games ahead and they got shown up for it.

Out: Jonas, Mead, Burgoyne, McEntee (to sub)
In: Burton, Rioli, Narkle, Fantasia

Dixon in for Lord if available. If JHF available, Narkle shifts to sub and McEntee out entirely. I'd also love Hayes back in for Lycett but calling for Sam Hayes to come in when the coaching staff have literally any other option is a waste of time.

Junior Rioli will return after he missed the loss to the Blues following his trip home to mark the anniversary of the passing of his father.

Charlie Dixon and Jason Horne-Francis will be looking to return from an ankle injury and back soreness while Trent McKenzie could even be in the mix despite previously being considered to be two to three weeks with the ankle sprain he suffered against Gold Coast.
