Does he have any forward craft though? Strikes me as a number 1 ruck only rather than a ruck forward
I'm not sure he's a deep forward marking type either but I'd like to see what he can do because of his other attributes. At the very least he would need an opposition tall to mind him and he adds balance to a team with now only has one tall forward. We're 'gifting' games to Hynes right now and I can't see that Smith would offer anything less albeit he's a different type. It is a risk/reward situation but one worth trying.

The selection of Smith could be a masterstroke. He will provide the 2nd ruck which means Lobb stays back. He is a competitive beast and will bring the ball to ground even if he doesn't mark it. He's pretty quick for a big guy and often operates as his own midfielder in the twos. Nothing to lose trialling him but quite possibly a lot to gain.
Just thinking the same thing. Smith is the main player in the twos that is looking most likely to be competitive in senior footy at this stage.

Send one of Lobb, Buku or JOD forward. Bramble might get a week so opens up an opportunity for another debut.

Hynes played most of the game so happy for him to be sub again. He’s not ready but the experience will be invaluable.

Poulter seems like a logical inclusion for a makeshift 3rd tall given it’s the exact role he’s playing.

The MC might have to go in a different direction given how tall GWS are. Hogan, Riccardi, Cadman & Stringer are all big boys. We have no matchup for Stringer unless someone like Williams goes back.

Was thinking this too.
As much as i want a Bus debut, Smith is the change i want to see

Smith struggles to take marks against state level footballers.

Marra would be shorter odds to come in and replace Darcy than Smith being part of that forward half positional shuffle.

Poulter plays a third marking target up forward.
Poulter is terrible deep but decent at HF where he can run and lead.
We can play Naughton deeper and Poulter can play more of a roaming/link role. Hopefully that gives him space on the left as he's beautiful on that side.

Hynes will probably (just) hold his spot.

Poulter HF (Davidson can also take that on with Poulter taking his wing), Khamis or JOD deep forward, Naughton CHF should work all right.

Stringer doesn’t need a tall defender given he’s never been a good overhead mark. Sure his lack of application didn’t help, but a big part of his downfall post 2015 was opposition teams realising that despite being 192cm he didn’t need a KPD (who he’d then burn if the ball hit the deck) and blokes like Rampe could completely towel him up. I’d love a Bailey Dale direct match up given the respective damage they could do.

There's a chance we got to Gardner too if only because he has the tank + ruck chop-out ability too.
Gardner isn't really a threat in front of the sticks though and I'd back Poulter to be a 1-2 goal per game player ahead of Gardner.

Yeah not sure about Smith as a forward, I haven't liked what I've seen even when he was a junior. If we were to bring him in, I think it would have to be as a primary ruck with English spending the majority of time up forward and I don't think he's ready for that. Tough call though, not a lot of options.

I think I'd lean more towards bringing in Poulter/Gardner for Darcy.

If only Croft had a decent impact in the VFL he would be the perfect player to get the call up. There’s definitely an opportunity there for him now, if he can get some form.

The other thing about Lobb in the backline is that Jones looks to be dropping off a bit, so we really need him back there.

No really good options unfortunately. Bevo is coaching for his career, so at least we know (hope) what he puts in place is the best option rather than something left field.

He looks nowhere near it as a forward at the moment sadly. Actually looked uncompetitive yesterday as he wasn't getting the ball where he wanted it and his opponent read the ball much quicker then him so he couldn't affect the contest. Similar story the previous game. Might be better for him to play up the ground a bit more.

Agreed - he may benefit from better delivery in the AFL but you can’t promote him off the back of his last few games.

Would love for Smith to get a crack. May not be ready either but is a real competitor & has been in fine form.

Pretty brave choices, however, though not likely to play Smith as a Forward ruck,it is the only way I see we can keep Lobb Back. Could live with thos

He has played very limited minutes forward at VFL level. If Smith is brought in (which is my preference) I'd say he'd contribute as much or more than Buku does forward whilst being more competent in the ruck.
I'd be looking at Smith playing 40% ruck 30% forward, English 60% ruck 30% forward.
I agree, the importance of the second ruck is overlooked. If we don't do as you say, I can't see an alternative to Buss coming in and Lobb foing forward.

I was at the game yesterday and though do agree Buss took the wrong option a few times, there were just as.many times his options and skills led directly to an inside 50.

Do you know how many marks he took?

There may be an opportunity but he hasn't even played 20 VFL matches yet and is miles off being ready later this season let alone now

Highly doubt we bring Smith in, developing nicely but nowhere near AFL ready.

Options will be either Buss debut with Lobb going forward, or Gardner in as a forward
