Absolutely mad dropping Jones. Especially with Hogan coming in..
Completely agree.
Liam hasn't been in the best world beating form but i thought he was improving week on week, considering the injury and lack of pre-season.

Madness to drop him.

There's always things we don't know on the sports science side too. Maybe his top speed is really down this year and not getting to as many contests or covering the ground well enough. The science side combined with the eye test of him not intercepting well, crashing contests repeatedly and letting the ball get out the back and just not having near the impact of his previous years over the last few weeks. It's ballsy and brave but Bevo wants to win as much or more than anyone else and the match committee don't believe Jones gives us the best chance this week, so i'm happy to back him in on this big call. Plus our future blue chip full back is the one replacing him, so that makes it a lot easier to swallow.

I really like the runners and midfield balance we have this week. We look very dangerous across the ground and with guys like Freijah, Harmes, Kennedy, Sanders who were required in the middle for decent spurts early on, can now impact other areas of the ground at a high level having Bont back in the middle. And then some real runners or guys with forward nous like Davidson and Williams on the wings, Dolan, West and VDM around the forward line as well as JJ down back to support Dale with some run and carry, very strong looking side considering our injuries.

The question mark will definitely be KPP at both ends with a 1st gamer in and the 3rd tall still a mystery currently as well as who is supporting Naughton up fwd. Also if we will have enough height and structure to minimise the damage done by Taylor + Himmelberg etc intercepting.

Should be a fascinating game, can't wait.

It’s interesting that Lobb went forward if Jones was on the chopping block. Also interesting that Buku and JOD stay in the team.

Jones has not been at his best but I feel an omission is very harsh. Could they not have ‘rested’ him?

I don’t know why I’m taking this personally but I like the bloke and he gives 100% every week. It’s not like an omission is going to get him to try harder.

Lobb went forward when the game was all but already won. I'm not sure there's much to it and all of JOD, Khamis and Lobb went forward from defence (and even Kennedy played a few minutes out of the goalsquare which he hadn't done for us yet but he did do at Carlton) just so Bevo could see what might work or how the players would respond to it.

I'm also genuinely surprised that people don't think Jones has been poor. He has been, and it stretches back to the last few games of last season too.

Anyone else concerned about our defensive matchups? I just feel like we don’t match up well anywhere.

Hogan - Lobb
Cadman - Busslinger
Stringer - Buku? Cleary?
Greene - Dale? Cleary?
Riccardi floating through as well

I can see every one of those players getting off the chain. The only real option of deployment is sending Williams back to cover Stringer or Greene.

Yeah it’s been pretty clear for me as much as I don’t want it to be true. It’s not a dig at the guy either, love him but he’s pushing 35 this was always going to happen at some point

I don’t think you can look at individual match ups in isolation; that’s not how the game is played anymore.

On paper I definitely agree with you that their forward line has our defence well and truely covered.

But just as important as the match ups (or even moreso) is how they structure up and play as a defensive unit together, along with the midfield winning the ball and, when not, applying pressure on the opposition ball carrier.

If 2016 taught me anything, it is the above.

me too, ive felt like ive been on crazy pills for some time as one of the very few people who criticize Jones. In a short space of time, Lobb has gone miles past him as evidenced by the Saints game plan. with others emerging/ waiting its time to look to the future.
I concede that he's probably best suited for Hogan this week, and Hogan probably kicks 6 plus, but im happy to see how others go.

Stringer doesn’t need a tall defender given he’s never been a good overhead mark. Sure his lack of application didn’t help, but a big part of his downfall post 2015 was opposition teams realising that despite being 192cm he didn’t need a KPD (who he’d then burn if the ball hit the deck) and blokes like Rampe could completely towel him up. I’d love a Bailey Dale direct match up given the respective damage they could do.
May be striger has changes since then

We need to get the ball to ground... I think we can hurt them on the rebound. But if our pressure is off, we’ll get torn apart.

Also, Buku trained with the forwards and O'Donnell with the backs this week. I think Bevo prefers Buku as the second ruck option, so it makes sense for him to play forward and pinch-hit in the ruck.

Buss will take the deepest forward, so Hogan. Tough match up on debut.
Cleary is a good match up for Greene.
Buku is a good match up for Stringer.
Lobb will play on Cadman/Riccardi and peel off when he can.

Looks ok to me, but it will depend on the supply.

Our forward line is more of a mystery to me.

In a stroke of genius, could Bevo be sending Jones back to the VFL to learn a forward role, and have him finish his career as a pinch hitting defensive forward?
He has played there long enough in the past and been in the system long enough that I think Bevo would make the switch mid week like he did with Lobb to defence if that was his thinking.

Every time I go interstate it doesn't end too well. And it's not cheap to do it.

My only hesitation
We win some we lose some but being able to go to interstate games is one of many reasons I retired from coaching local footy

One thing GWS do very well is they persist to get Hogan the matchup they want. I guarantee that from the first centre bounce Hogan will be trying to switch onto Busslinger and we'll be forced to either allow it or to mess up our own defensive positioning.

It'll be an interesting watch.
