I wouldn't be making too many positional changes.

Can disrupt the gel within that line
right, but we just lost our best defensive pressure forward vs a rebounding pair of Noble and Rioli. one has serious finals experience, besides both being very good.

Dudley will not manage a 4Q job on either one, that's a fact.

some magnet movement seems inevitable

Tough selections this week for Wagner and Switta.
Choose 2 of:
  • Dudley. The most like for like (Switta) but hasn't been in the best form.
  • Johnson. Not the same as either, but form was ok before going out.
  • Noddy. Had a great game in the WAFL but a bad month in the AFL before it.
  • Walker. He looks bloody fit in training but has barely played AFL this year. Would definitely be a calculated risk.
  • Simpson. Played a couple of good games before going out with injury.
  • Draper. Out of favour.
  • Sharp. Out of favour.

- I've got a funny feeling it might actually be Simpson and Noddy - don't ask me why.

yeah, i agree. Concern is Wombat doesn't have 4Q pressure in him atm; Cooper is too young, small and inexperienced to shut them down; and Johnson and NOD play elsewhere.

Personally, given Banfield's now experience in defense, I'd think about moving him into the defensive forward position to take one of them (and for his ability to kick a banana off one step when we have the ball), and bring in Walker to replace his HB position.

So, probably not going to happen, but I would bring in Walker and Johnson. Big strong boys for finals footy.

JLo will probably select Cooper and NOD

He didn’t really touch on Walker or Simpson. Be a surprise now if 1 came in

Agree that we should play NOD and Johnson, they are by far the best two available. I wouldn't play Dudley until next season when he is fit, hopefully.

Simpson a smokey.

Ah so frustrating to lose Switta, arguably our least replaceable player.

How would noddy go as a defensive forward and rotating wing?

He strikes me as a see-ball, get-ball, kick at goal sort of player more than a tagger - at least for now. He's certainly got the size and burst speed to go with one of GC half backs though.

Walks as a defensive forward maybe, not sure he has ever played that role so probably unlikely.

I think Dudley in is suicide with the way they run off half back.
Walks as a forward reminds me of when Nyhuis played forward after coming intro the team and kicked 4 goals. Someitimes a surprise positional move catches the opposition off guard.

Some options:

1. NOD and Johnno -> rotate midfielders such as Young, Serong, O'Meara forward as the 7th forward when needed.

2. Banners forward, bring in Aish/Walker/Simpson for Switta but play in the back line, with NOD or Johnno for Wagner.

3. Dudley for Switta, NOD or Johnno for Wagner.

Any of those are possible.

I think we are going to see it at Adelaide Oval tonight so will be interesting to see how that goes.

Switta out is a massive loss. Huge for transitional ball movement.

Really hope Dudley doesn’t come back in. He’s unfit and finals would easily expose him.

Has to be Johnson for Wagner, Simpson for Switkowski. Otherwise Walker for Switkowsi, Banfield forward

Yeah could tell from the report the other night and JL’s demeanour that Switta wasn’t going to play. Ffs.

Johnson and NOD would be the most obvious ins on name value but then you run the risk of playing too many one-wood midfielders.

It’s left-field but I don’t hate the idea of Walker forward as the makeshift pressure forward. He’s really the only one with the speed to compensate for what we lose with Switta/Wagner. F50 pressure has been an issue for us already and we can’t let Noble and Rioli run it out all night. Banners forward + 3 talls makes us even more susceptible to this. I like Dudley but I don’t really want to see him in a game of this magnitude until he gets fit. Can Simpson play this role?

We’ve got options and it will be interesting to see what they do. This is a hurdle but not an insurmountable one. No premiership team has ever come without its hardships.

Yes. And?

To be fair, GC have Rioli, Noble and Powell all who can distribute off HB.

Frederick and Bolton will keep their opponents busy up the ground and in the forward line.

IF what we are after is rotatable midfielders then we play NOD and Johnson and not worry about their FWD nous, they are there to rotate in and out, be accountable on their opponent and get up and back. Don't forget we have a wing to cover as well.

Noddy made some footy IQ mistakes over this last month so I also wouldn't be giving him a brand new role in a final. Banners to the forward line and walker back would be my move. Bring in Noddy or Johnson for Wags.

Switta has been pivotal to our ‘corridor mode’ of transitioning from our d50, particularly in terms of getting on the end of possession chains and delivering inside 50.

So his absence is a big loss, undeniably.

But we still have Murphy Reid, Freddy and Bolton to play that role. It may require a slight rejigging of roles for the latter two.

In saying that, I’m expecting the match to be more of territory battle rather than a transition game, given that pressure steps up a few levels in finals and given the wet conditions.

Our contested game will be critical to winning this. So I’d expect the match committee to bring in NOD and MJ for their bigger bodies, with Bolton having more forward minutes and JOM and Erasmus having stints in the forward line (maybe Young too).

Dudley is also a chance if the MC thinks we’ll specifically need a small in the forward line to crumb or lock the ball in from high entries. But it’s a risk to carry too many low TOG players - we would risk running out of legs towards the end.
