Strategy Changes: Elimination Final v Gold Coast

We want to see Frederick kick two in the first and we will know GC are playing too loose to contain Freo.
I thought Frederick was poor enough v the bulldogs actually. He definitely has an issue with the physical contested side of the game and is never going to be a guy that puts his head over the ball in the same manner that the likes of Treacy and Switta do.

But it was even noticed by the media - Kane Cornes highlighted it on agenda setters last week and rightly said if you are pulling out of contests finals footy won’t come easy for you.

However for me Frederick is dangerous enough on the lead and in broken play, and accurate enough from set shots that you just carry that contested ball weakness and hope it’s the kind of game that he can get on the end of 2 or 3 and punish the opposition.

As we saw last night though tight finals are just brutal in terms of opposition pressure and usually the toughest and hardest team at the contest wins.

I thought Degoey gave the prototype midfield finals display last night. Not a single fumble all night. Ferocious attack on the ball. Clean and decisive with every possession. I’m no fan of the guy at all but he was outstanding.

If we can get something like that from Andy Brayshaw and Caleb Serong tomorrow I don’t think we are losing.

Dudley’s last game at Peel was average but that was an outlier - he just couldn’t get into the game at all for whatever reason. His previous game he kicked 3 goals and was running around possessed sharking the ball of contests and snapping goals (16 possessions, 3 goals 2 behinds vs Subi). Perhaps he was under the weather a bit (vs Swans) I’m not too sure but he didn’t look his normal energetic self.

We are tall in the f50 and need crumbing small forward. Replacing Switta with Johnson is not a L4L. From what the coach was saying Johnson isn’t 100% recovered from his ankle injury.
Agreed and also Fyfe had a great game just a few weeks ago too, notably in the wet when things slowed down and all the mere mortals got fumbly and slippery. He was superb below his knees, if its wet he may have quite a valuable role. The Wombat is a good in, as long as our bigs bring it to ground and he is front and centre we can win this.

I tend to agree re Freddy, though sometimes I think he is trying to hold his position to be the outside line breaker , which is fine, but he doesn’t have the game sense to know when not to. On the other hand maybe his lack of real defensive intent is the reason he went so late in the draft. Either way we are a better team with him in it for the foreseeable future.

They'd get far more money out of Freo advancing than Gold Coast?
Reckon more Freo fans would travel to QLD than GC fans that are already there?

+ the build and hype over there would be a huge lifter for the state

Bloody hope we roll the suns tomorrow, I don't think they will intentionally screw us, I just think umpiring has every chance to be shit lol

I’ve already thrown a sneaky eye on flights to the sunshine state next weekend but don’t want to tempt fate…

This is gonna be a very tough final, Gold Coast are good now.

The best we could hope for is they suffer under the pressure a bit at the start and we manage to put our foot down early, not really a strength of ours though.

100% I agree. I never trust the dockers fully in games like this.
This kind of shit doesn’t help us either.

It’s like the reverse of the bulldogs v freo build up in Melbourne media 2 weeks ago.

Thats gonna be plastered in the GC changerooms now

Disrespectful as ****

This has the makings of "Tomorrows fish and chip paper"
This is a deliberate pump up so can pour a deluge of shit on us if we lose. Bunch of w***ers.

What's with all the conspiracy theory crap? Absolutely no benefit to what you're saying.
Conspiracy cuts both ways though. You could also say: With a Perth NRL team announced and the reports of DAZN being unhappy with the Foxtel AFL deal they'll want a strong viewership in the WA demographic as well. And with their go to WA guys at historically inept levels, it's time to revert to the B squad for as long as possible this finals series. If you were a conspiracy theorist it actually makes far more logical sense for the AFL to want Fremantle through next week than Gold Coast. If you were to think along those lines that is.

Or, and hear me out here, Umpiring is inconsistent and we all have a negativity bias in how we perceive things depending on how much we want to believe them.

Edit: And I'm fully aware I'm one of those. Sometimes I just need to cope during a game like many people. I have some self awareness of this (though could be better). But I also think that once the dust settles so do the irrational thoughts......mostly.....

Couldn’t agree more about DeGoey, he was brilliant.
Unfortunately I think Rowell & Anderson have more in common with DeGoey in terms of size, strength & skills than any of our lot. Going to be brutal at the coalface.
Could be time for Erasmus to come of age with his size and getting his hands on it inside.
Interestingly Rowell & Serong were often compared in junior football with Rowell the highest profile due to size and explosive athleticism but Serong’s coach said every time Matt went up a level Caleb was right there with him.
This’ll be the biggest head to head they’ve ever had.
