Quiney deserves another go after they threw him under the bus against SA to protect Hughes.

Yeah I agree, his 9 runs and two ducks were very impressive. Was sooooooo unlucky to get caught in the deep.

Khawaja>Quiney easily.

Maxwell is not even half a spinner

True dat. But I guess the flipside is picking Usman who failed as a test cricketer before and hasn't changed anything about his game. it's hardly an ideal set of circumstances.

(actually the flipside seems to be picking all 4 seamers and lyon)

Maxwell is not even half a spinner

the problem is, he's not enough of a batsmen to justify himself as a symonds style 'batsmen who bowls a bit'

Henriques in, Watson out for mine.

The other possible change being starc in for Siddle, as he's the spearhead and this is an opportune time for an extended rest before 3 massive series'.

in terms of overall output, i'd take Lyon, Henriques and part time spin from warner and clarke over spin from lyon and what is barely more than part time spin from Maxwell and no Henriques.

Also you'd be picking Moises in top form at his home ground in a situation where the series is already won and the heat is off a bit.

So Maxwell isn't enough of a batsman with an average of 42 but Moises is with an average of 29?

In India Watson will be vital, hope he is right for those tests. We should be playing the 2 best spinners in the country in every test, and 2 quicks, plus Watto.

best 11 says Usman plays, Maxwell's bowling will be surplus. In Melbourne Lyon's bowling was surplus enough as it is...
but If maxwell is who they want to take to India as the 2nd spinner, then he should play here first.

I think maxwell is a batsmen (pretty good one as the 42 suggests) who bowls a bit.
Meanwhile I view Henriques as a genuine all round option in the Watson mould who is averaging 80 with the bat and 20 with the ball this season.

The fact that maxy is in the squad means he's a fairly likely inclusion, however i'd be picking henriques because i feel that the second spinner role could be filled by a combo of clarke and warner, giving us a balanced attack of 4 quicks, a front line spinner and 2 handy part timers.

With watson going out, why not replace him in like for like fashion?

I really dont get the Maxwell inclusion i think he is a long way off test standard at the moment, dont get me wrong i think he is a pretty good 20/20 player and a handy ODI player, his bowling or batting isnt good enough to play at test level yet.

I know some people are saying they might want to have a look at maxwell before the India tour, But surely if Aus are to take 2 spinners to india we are going to take a spinner not a guy thats a batsman who bowls part time spin.

Australia are going to want 3 pace bowlers and 2 spinners as much as possible when playing in India. Given Watson's issues, you can't rely on him to be that third paceman. Maxwell provides that flexibility and, given the series is already won and the SCG is the best deck for spinners, it's the perfect time to try Maxwell out.

Mark Waugh is that you?

I picked that Maxwell would be in the test team very soon! I love him as a player but I don't reckon he should be in team, however, I believe that the selectors thought he should be in the team. Picked earlier than I thought. He can pack his bags to India already.

If you watch him live he is exciting. You also cannot deny his averages as well. Averages 32 with the ball (which is better than Lyon, Beer and Holland) and 42 with the bat. Also took a 4/40 odd in the last match.

Not just that, with the selectors favouring all-rounders, the need for a second spinner to tour India, and I just have a feeling that the selectors tend to like the way he goes about things, I think that if he does well in the post-BBL shield matches, plus perhaps this game, then he's on a stop for the India tour.

He might have to unpack them if he doesn't make runs or take wickets.

Maxwell is a fielder who bowls and bats a bit. His batting is just T20 style, he has no ability to grind, he will just try and hit out. Against Sri Lanka that might be ok, against India and better nations he will fail. His Bowling is also very average. He doesn't turn it enough, has no other ball but the stock offspinner. Warner (and I don't even like his bowling) is a better second spin option than Maxwell.

Selectors are once again punting on potential rather than picking on proper form. Disgusting, when will they get over this youth fetish?

They have already basically said it is Maxwell for Watto, and Usman is on standby for Clarke. Still not decided on how to fit Starc in though. The Clarke haters will be happy he has said himself that he will bat at 4 if he is fit to play, and everyone else from and including Wade will shift up one in the order as well.

I've said this before - his first class bowling average is better than Australia's three first choice spinners (Lyon, Beer, Holland) - not saying he's a better bowler than them, but he is a decent bowler. Took 4/40 odd in the last first class game that he played.

He also averages over 40 with the bat in first class cricket.

Not to mention he's a excellent fielder to boot.
I do agree that his style of batting as a T20 player is a bit limited, but then again you can argue that it's the same for Warner.

He's probably not good enough to bat 6, however, his off spin as a third spinner in India could be handy. Samit Patel for England is a lower-order hard hitting batsman and a all round spinner, they're similar in that mould.

Well it seems that my suggested team is a real possibility. Clarke thinks similar to me that Johnson could play at number 7 as the replacement for Watson and thereby play 4 quicks along with Lyon. Although I suspect it's more likely that Maxwell will play.

Michael Clarke said:
Maxwell comes into the squad as the allrounder, so it is a squad of 13 and then we wait and see what the conditions are like in Sydney. I think the other allrounder sits beside me right here [Mitchell Johnson] as he showed with the bat in this game. So we've got options. If you think the wicket is going to spin you've got the option of Maxy, if you think there's enough in there to play four fast bowlers and a spinner, you've got Johnson.
