Then stop gifting games to 30 year olds, try and find which young blokes have potential at least.
The way the system is now, 30 is the new 20. You aren't going to see many young players debut in the future IMO.

Depends. But it will be the mid 20s guys who get selected young (like Mitch Marsh) and have really bad career averages because of it

Then we won't ever reach South Africa's level. I have no issue with 30 year olds IF they have a 48+ FC average....there is my problem....these are 30 year olds barely (if at all) averaging 40.

System is broke - I personally don't see it changing, the lower levels are weak and getting weaker - my advice is get used to it.

There are three players with the kind of Sheffield Shield career average you want - Rogers, Khawaja and Smith

So there is something wrong with the system. That doesn't mean picking more 30 year olds in a failing system. Let's stick with what we have until such time the averages improve. Picking blokes with mid 30 Shield averages won't work.

Its Test cricket. EveryTest is important. You pick the best available, and make people force their way in. Gifting games to 20 year olds on "potential" doesn't help, and just increases the weaknesses in the current system. Make people earn their spots. If those earning the places are 30, so be it.

For the limited over games (20 and 50), sure, you can build for the next World Cup. Every Test is a grand final. Every Test must have the best available, regardless of age.

It is a little strange people are pointing to this last test as a big reason we need watto, lets face it watson has been giving us very little overs or impact with the ball for several years now.

Must add though i still can't see who we dump him for, as sad as it is he is actually the best performed number 3 since ponting and he is one of the few aussies to have a decent record vs england in england.

Watto is not a consistent allrounder but he really doesn't need to be to hold a spot in our top 6 right now.

I see you your point, but I think the reason he's bowled very little is they've been too scared to bowl him, with so many injuries. It's clear he's always been an all rounder. He doesn't justify a spot in the side as a batsman, so he either bowls and bowls well (which he's very capable of) or we give blokes like Marsh a crack at it. I'd keep bowling Watto until he breaks down.

I hope he comes out and makes a Boxing Day ton. Still won't please some people.

Hope you brought a jumper, a tad chilly in old Melbourne town this morning :$
Nope: just a long sleeved shirt. But I'm sure the cricket will warm things up!!!

Yes, the player development system so far as quality Test players was torn apart years ago by CA's insatiable hunger for $$$$. Like you, I don't ever see it changing whilst we adopt the need for quick dollars rather than long term planning. We are putting our eggs in one basket hoping for some more David Warners to evolve from T20 like a phoenix from the ashes. The selection of Glenn Maxwell to bat 3 illustrates this point.

Ian Chappell said last season that even if CA was to get back on track right now, it would still take a number of years before the benefits start to show. He added that he can't see it happening either. I genuinely fear Test cricket is headed for a very lean period in so far as quality of cricket. Let's hope someone in authority realises before we destroy it completely.

They don't care, they think they can identify talent and retro fit technique - you cannot. Rogers, Hussey were the last of the old system. Clarke and Warner are freaks to an extent.

Burns was OK to the extent that he hit them well (so he warmed up) but his footwork was all over the shop and he was like a cat on a hot tin roof. I reckon nerves got to him a bit but the raw material is there and he is worth a go in Sydney and keeping an eye on the future.

His skittishness early has always been a bit of an issue so I am told. That why they pushed him up to open.

Who the hell knows? I suppose that one more time out is the end for Watson they figure there is no point stuffing Watson around so the newbie can have the easier no 6 gig. I just hope on tele it wasn't a Quiney like situation where Tubby crapped on about it being the best 13 when really he is just starting out and has a bit of ground to cover. Good luck to him thou reckon if he settles a bit and controls the tempo a bit more he has the game.

What should happen

1. Warner
2. Burns (Rogers is cooked, he can be called up for the English Ashes if required)
3. S. Marsh (give him at least one more test)
4.Smith
5. Voges (drop Watson he's gone, has been just awful this series)
6. M. Marsh (if he can't bowl we may have to keep Watson)
7. Whiteman (Haddin is a complete spud
8. Johnson
9.Harris (Harris should be fine and Starc is soft)
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood
:D
