Not convinced on Bird personally. Actually surprised they didn't go Paris
Please explain the Paris one for me. Am I not mistaken he's only recently made his Shield debut?

Now for Hazelwood to break down and Australia to finally have their strongest pace attack in a very long time :D
Why stop there ;)

Marsh and Lyon out. Ahmed and Maxwell in. A complete Vic attack!!!!

:D

What's happened with Tim Paine?

Wasn't he meant to be a certainty a few years ago before injury struck? If he is injury free now, why is he so far from being mentioned for the test team?

Injuries and an inability to hit big scores.

Not exactly the first sportsman in history to do a major injury, miss large chunks of time, and never be the same player afterwards.

Tasmania dropped Paine from their Sheffield Shield side, so that might have something to do with him not being mentioned in relation to the Australian Test Team.

BOM is currently saying there is a 90% chance of rain on Saturday. Of course, they could revise their forecast, but it's not looking good.

On the plus side, plenty of rain will help the Windies make it to the third day :)

What's the over limit "cut off" at which they do or don't give refunds? Am I right in thinking it's 25 overs, or did I make that up?

Also, I haven't been to a test match in ages - do they still throw the gates open at the tea break? I'm heading to the A-League on Sunday which starts at 5, so it might be cool to go watch a bit over an hour of the cricket beforehand. (Might still go for the whole day if we get lots of rain on Saturday)

For purely selfish reasons, I am hoping it rains a little on the first two days. I have tickets to day 3 on Monday and I want to see a full day of cricket. Don't want the game to be over by lunch on day 3 ;)

This is becoming a scandal. Did Jackson Bird kill Rod Marsh's cat with an axe? Did he run over his kid?

The treatment of Bird is becoming a scandal. Boland is barely Sheffield Shield level, and bowling 1 ball at 140km/h on Sunday night doesn't meet their supposed criteria.
Give us a spell. Bolands been a consistent shield bowler for the last 2 years im all for giving him a crack and seeing what he can do. Especially against this pathetic so called competition we are up against
From what I have seen I was thinking that Boland was capable of hitting the low 140s consistently in the Shield - you've seen more of him than myself, so fair enough if I'm wrong on that assumption.

I do want Bird in the Test side and I am confused by his being overlooked consistently this summer.

Admittedly it's hard to get a lot of continuity in watching Sheld cricket, but in the sessions I've been able to watch this summer Boland has bowled the most impressive spells. I don't know how it will translate to test cricket, but he's been hitting the bat very hard on an awkward length time and time again. As was the case with the desperately unlucky NCN, I expect him to carry the drinks for these two tests anyway with the selectors unlikely to shake things up just for the sake of it.

He's had big wraps on him for a while, but yes he has only played 2 FC games. He is averaging 22, so at least could be said to be on a hot streak. I wouldn't pick him yet but can understand why people would not be surprised if was picked. Cummins and Warner (and Healy going back nearly 30 years) were picked off about the same amount of Shield games.

I'd rather see guys picked who have shown a couple of seasons of form, but that applies more to "out of season" where a proven ability to back up after a break is important.
For home games someone in a hot streak isn't a bad choice, it just has to be kept in mind that it may just be a hot streak when it comes to picking a touring side. (And there are no Shield games before the squad departs for NZ; plus I just realised no tour game before the Tests, just 3 ODIs.)

So we're just handing out baggy greens now to bowlers who don't meet the selectors own criteria to "give them a crack" against poor opposition?

As I stated previously, he has a pretty ordinary 13 wickets in the Shield so far this season; when you consider that 7 of those came in one innings, he's otherwise been shithouse.

Take your Victorian blinkers off for 5 minutes - Boland is not good enough to play for Australia.

Who should come in then? Bird?
