I'd imagine that Crowell is being considered as a makeshift FF also. May be able to sneak a couple of goals before they put someone decent on him.

Roo and Macca would be the 2 to do it with, and Brisbane wouldn't dare leave a tall on them because of the mismatch.

Man on man with space to move they would kick plenty IMO.

Time to think laterally.

What do you think??

I posted a similar idea in the carey 1-2 weeks thread and I think we have to go with this.

If we go with our current structure and gameplan, we will get absolutely flogged IMO. Brisbane's defence will zone off their opponents, spoil and create numbers at the fall of the ball. Then they'll run off their opponents downfield, creating numerous opportunities for their forwards and our defenders won't be able to cope.

We need to play a possession based game with skillful passing to free men. We need to run hard and run all day. Bombing long to a target at centre half forward or full forward just won't work against the Lions with the cattle we have in the forward lines. We need quick leading players isolated in space in our forward 50.

However, I seriously doubt Ayres would contemplate such a drastic change in playing style.

I heard John Reid on 5AA tonight and he agreed with your comments about Brisbane liking their opponents to bomb it long into their forward lines as they back their defence to get possession of the ball etc enabling them to play their game from there on.

He said that they had spent a lot of time working on their game plan against Brisbane but refused to give anything away on what it would be, other than that it would have to involve a more possession type of game, hanging onto the ball longer rather than bombing it.

Like the Einstein he is  Cornesy kept pressing Reidy to tell all, but all he got out of Reidy was that there are obviously 3 ways they could play up forward

- tall
- small
- less forwards with the rest of the forward line pushed up ground

He was asked what options we had available for talls and he discussed Hentschel and Bock. Very enthusiastic about Hentschel as a FUTURE top forward for us currently learning his trade and felt Bock would make the grade as well. But if you read between the lines, he was saying clearly that they won't be there on Saturday.

As we don't have the talls, I'm starting to think that they may well try something along the lines that we have been suggesting, ant. Nothing to lose in my book.

It will be interesting to see what this game plan they have devised will be.

Please, please don't let it involve Ben Marsh!!

Well you'd be start going then because I dont think he will be dropped.
I know he was loose against Woewoedin but he did some good things too and shows a bit of 'desperation'

Ill bet you a six pack of Coopers pale ale he plays against Brisbane!

We spent a lot of time working on our gameplan against Pork too only to come undone by Pork playing a more possession type of game.

Id rather Brisbane had beaten Sydney; because this week we are in for a hammerin'

Brisbane by 41 points

There; that shoul;d give them the kiss of death :D

I would think that Begley and Doughty are almost certainties to come in this week TJ. Does this mean that you think that Carey and Gallagher are the 2 to go??

Shirley might also be a chance as a 2nd tagger.

Yep, Carey and Gallagher out.
Not sure who to come in but Doughty must fancy his chances.
Id like to see a wildcard thrown in but the deck is spent.

I agree that Henschell could lose confidence if he got picked and has a shocker but we do need another tall goalkicker.
Dunno about Bock or even Smith becuase Im not privvy to thier last few games.

Picking Shirley shouldnt happen either - We wont win be negating

Yeah, I heard the same interview, and it was rather interesting.....Reidy doesn't give much away but at the same time he does give a few clues.....hopefully we do make a few changes to our style of play. As you said, there isn't much to lose and it may also help us later on to have something else to go to when maybe Plan A isn't working. ATM, I'm not sure we have a decent Plan B.....

And yes, kicking long to Marsh and Perrie doesn't fill me with confidence so let's hope this idea is wiped off the board quick smart.

The closer we get to the game the more the vibes are that Mattner will keep his spot.:( Personally, I don't think he deserves too but with the length of our injury list, beggers can't be choosers.

I wouldn't select Hentschel this week either but Riedy did mention that his name is on the white board. I doubt he will play but one thing that works in his favour is his mobility. Hentschel sort of plays as a medium more than a tall with the way he moves and his ability below his knees. He is mobile and is reasonably quick which MIGHT work in his favour. I am just not a big fan of giving youngsters a go in such big games.

A couple of weeks ago Bock played really well but last week he hasn't been good at all.

Smith has been playing reserves, so I would say he is no chance.;)

I listened to the same interview and I was amazed hoe much of a d*ckbrain Cornesy was in that interview. He just kept pressing. Did he really think he will get anything out of Riedy as far as strategies go??????

What a d*ckbrain:rolleyes:

Damn I missed the interview, but I'm glad I have so many people reporting back on it. :) Good to hear reidy talking about needing to change the game plan due to our injuries & lack of good marking talls. So how should we structure our forward line to surprise the Lions?

I'd go the way I suggested earlier. Roo and Macca up forward and everyone else up the ground. Macca to rotate with Edwards, Bode and Ladhams. Roo to rotate with Goodwin and Crowell.

Current forecast in Brisbane for Saturday is fine, with rain clearing by Friday or so.

Given our options we should be going small and praying for rain me thinks!

Mystery illness could put Akermanis out
By Bill McDonald
May 14 2003

Brisbane Lions' livewire midfielder Jason Akermanis is in doubt for Saturday night's Gabba clash with Adelaide and said he may need a break from football if blood tests do not diagnose a mystery illness that is sapping him of energy.

The 2001 Brownlow medallist, who finished with just four possessions against the Swans last Sunday, has been complaining of low energy levels and feeling tired, even away from football.

"I don't know whether I've hit a wall physically or mentally. It just doesn't seem to be right, so I'll just get the blood tests and get to the bottom of it," Akermanis said. "Whether it's a hormone imbalance or a lack of something in my body, I've got to find out what it is and make sure my energy is back to where it should be."

He did not rule out taking a break from football, saying he "probably might at some stage".

The 26-year-old first experienced effects of the illness about a month ago and was especially affected during the humid round-five game against the Bulldogs.

Brisbane full-forward Alastair Lynch has recently missed a fortnight due to lethargy as a result of his previous battle with chronic fatigue syndrome, but Akermanis said he was convinced he had not been struck down with the same condition.

Probably be better if he played by the sounds of things!

If we start both Macca & Roo up forward, will we have enough talent on the ball to match Brisbane? It would probably leave Goodwin, Bickley, Stenglein, Edwards & Bode on the ball/wings. With Roo's form, I would prefer him to start in the middle & look for someone else to partner Macca (eg. Stiffy), as I reckon Roo is hitting good form. Also, what do you think of Goody returning to the backline given he is not 100% for running out the game in the middle & isn't much use up forward with his kicking?

I would star the Roo in the middle as he is in real good form & that's where the game will be set up from, i would start with Stenglein & Bickley along side Ricciuto in the square & have Biglands jumping straight into the Lions ruckman to get that edge that we have to have to at least give us a chance,
agree with starting Goody on a half back flank possibly on Akermanis & i would have Stiffy on a wing, as for the forward options god knows maybe Marsh ( please forgive me) & Perrie as our 2 talls with Macca, Burns, Ladhams & Bode to float around for the spills,

2 changes this week,
out, Carey & Gallagher
in, Doughty & Marsh if fit if not Begley.

Not much IMO. He's made some blunders under enormous pressure, but I think we forget he's a 20 something game player.

If I was selector I'd say:

Out: Carey and maybe Mattner

In: Doughty and maybe Begley

I think we should be going for pace so maybe Mattner should stay in.

Not sure that Mattner has done much wrong either really. He was incorrectly used on Saturday night.

Just because you drop the food doesn't mean you should blame the chopsticks!!

Not much, but i think Doughty needs to be brought back into the side & same as Napsyd i think Mattner has a bit more to offer, only other one who could miss out would be Crowell but even though he didn't set the world on fire last week he can play a number of roles in the team structure far more than Gallagher.

Crowell will be necessary (I can't believe I'm saying that) to plug holes in the forward line and possibly in defence. Can't seem him being dropped this week.

Maybe next week. :)
