The problem is we have recruited for Ross's game style and not for the evolution of the game

The trouble with Grey is that his strengths and weaknesses are the 180 degree opposite of Duffield's.
He's hard as a cats head and will provide a fierce contest, but his disposal in transition out of defence is atrocious.
would it be a better idea to put him up a forward flank?

Ballas out for deboer. At least deboer might get his hands on it and be more effective with defensive pressure. Play deboer as a pocket not a flanker.
I'm not worried about losing I just want to see us develop the kids where we have holes

Christ on a crutch

I'm not sure about his kicking and disposal there, to honest. With the quick rebound from defence all the good teams have, we might get punished too. And I don't know whether he would be an offensive weapon.

Out:
Barlow
C. Pearce
(D. Pearce, N.Suban, L Neale, and Mayne are all on thin ice I reckon for various reasons butchering in front of goal main one for a couple of them)
In:
M. de Boer (will out least be able to fire out clean handballs under pressure something Barlow no longer can in close)
Griffin (need A.Pearce to play genuine backline role - 3 talls required) - sandi needs a chop out and we need a resting ruckman up fwd to help our structure.

Myself I disagree. Ross created a game style that suited the talent he had at St Kilda, which also worked well at Freo -= both teams were short of top end talent when he took them on, so they had similar problems.

He was an assistant coach at Sydney for the 2005 Grand Final win, they were a pretty attacking side from memory.

Increased emphasis on defensive play is not just a Ross Lyon thing - IIRC it's been a similar trend in many team ball sports over the last few years including Soccer, Hockey and Basketball (granted that's just from my own observation)

Neale is not on thin ice, although he's not as good or performing as well as most on here seem to think. De Boer for Barlow .... don't know about that. Not much of an upgrade and both done at end of the year. Barlow hasn't been successful as a high half forward, I think he's more suited in the guts getting those quick handballs out. Being against the Eagles, I'd give him one more week as he hates them so much .... three Ross G medals to prove it. Can you ever imagine a De Boer, Clancee, Suban or D Pearce getting close to one of those.

Josh Hill has a Rosco. They hand them out to anyone these days and they've lost all meaning.

Got a whole list of players I'd prefer to see in the side but aren't available due to injury/game time so I'll say for now

In: Silvagni, De Boer, Mzungu
Out: Sutcliffe, C. Pearce, Mayne

This to start with - I like a lot about Sutty but he's just unable to cover the small/mediums like Duffield could. SNOS is bigger and slower but I feel he'll provide a great deal more structure and poise to the defensive setup. I know De Boer isn't the answer to pandemic of the plodders but he'll provide more pressure and consistency than Suban/C. Pearce. I offer up C. Pearce as he's a much greater liability than even Suban at the present. Finally Mzungu comes in for Mayne as he's better mark, kick for goal and everything else than Mayne is at the moment.

Once Bennell, Morabito, Yarran, Apeness, Blakey are available than they replace all the plodders just mentioned. Same goes for Crozier when he gets his (inevitable) form back.

We seem to have this uncanny ability to get burned by opposition small forwards.

In: Grey

Out: C.Pearce

Push Sutty into Pearce's role and have Grey shutdown a small forward.
Lee spurr?

I think we are reading from the same page.

Anchor A. Pearce down back, and leave him to develop his game.

Clancee, sorry but we need you back at the Black Ducks next season. Depth player now.

At present I rate De Boer over Micky Barlow.

Bring in a genuine 2nd ruck.

Pav gave his all last night, why have we not continued with Tabs ?. He was improving ............ at the rate of 1% a week.

I'm one who is staying positive, it is only the 2nd week, it is a long season, lots can change.

OK so my changes from the Sunday couch... As nice as it would be to know there were two dedicated rucks in the team I'm suggesting another defender and tall forward so would leave Sandi with part-time help for another week.

Out: Clancee, Suban (maybe not our worst, at this point I'm conceding a bias against him), Barlow/Mayne

In: Taberner, Tucker, Silvagni - would love to see Collins instead but having not watched WAFL this year lets just say our next best tall defender option.

Silvagni to bolster our tall defense, three tall forwards in Pavlich, Taberner and Pearce to try and stretch the eagles defense (with Pearce the option to switch back if needed) and Tucker because we'll he's all new and shiny.

I'd play him on the other dangerous small forward (this is assuming the opposition has 2 dangerous forwards). Both Spurr and Grey set the standard for hardness at the ball, which is something we have been lacking and something Hawthorn has in abundance.

Have WC got a small forward? Cripps is below par and Le Cras is slow as after his knee.

If you give Le Cras, Bennell and Cripps time and space they will burn you. We can't afford to be giving up Joe the Goose type goals.

The small forwards feed on the bad ball use up the ground, they quickly find space and get on the end of the pass inside fifty. It is unfair to punish their defender like it is a one on one defense when the middle let them down so much, like we saw last night.

We need more skill in the middle and to assert dominance in the stoppages, both combined for most of their score last night.

We need better MIDs.

Sutty can't defend. He let Tory Dickson rip us last year, and he is a liability on any talented small forward. It is not his natural position.

As for the midfield, well they have just been under performing. I did however say at the end of last year that Barlow was cooked, and he hasn't really done anything to tell me that I am wrong.
