Blues look to forwards in bid for elusive finals victory

A CARLTON blueprint involving its players locking the ball inside their attacking 50-metre arc and maintaining their effort through four quarters has the Blues hopeful of ending 17 years of pain in Sydney in Sunday's elimination final at ANZ Stadium.

''I think when [the forwards] are up and going and locking the ball in and really presenting well, it allows our team defence to set up and things like that.

''They sort of hold the key this week I think, it will be about how well Jeff Garlett and Eddie Betts really hold that footy in there, or mark the footy in the front 50.''

The Swans obvious strengths are:
- they are great at stoppages. They lock it in, and prevent the opposition from clearing it even if they don't get first hands on the ball. Stoppage, after stoppage after stoppage. Grind down the opposition
- very well coached, and have a VERY effective, refined defensive/flooding strategy. They've used this to choke our talent and running game countless times before. The one exception was the game at the Docklands Cow-paddock last year were our talent broke free in the 2nd half, and busted the Swans ultraflood.

The way to lose to the Swans:
- REACT to their tactics. i.e. try to outplay them at their own defensive game. Unless you're already have a very good defensive ultraflooding type team (e.g. Pies) it won't work. We'll never be good at that boring defensive stuff. Big mistake to try it.

The way to win:
- Super-fast, daring, unpredictable, attacking footy. Break lines. Stuff their pre-planned defensive structures with fast, direct ball movement into the forward 50. Avoid the safe, indirect option at all costs. Don't be afraid to kick to a contest - back our talent one-out. Do that at it'll all fall in a heap for the Swans. The good news is we have a list loaded with talent, leg-speed and X-factor that can do just that.

:)

Yep :thumbsu:

They're a really hard team to play against if you let them pressure you. They practically play with 18 taggers on the field and it's hard to withstand their pressure for four quarters so you have to break the game open and take control of it or they will wear you down.

Yes, yes and yes....I like it, back our talent, kick to a contest, take it on.

I think that;s they way, take it on, like there;s no tomorrow....

There due to drop one anyway...and we;re due for a win :)

Plus, if we;re not too far behind at 3/4 time, or in front, we;ll just blow em away, we have the legs to do it.

OUT:Hampson, Carrazzo (if injured)
IN: Jacobs, Hadley,

For mine, 2 changes only :-

In: Hadley, Jacobs
Out: Hampson, Carrazzo (only if injured)
:thumbsu:.

Btw, I heard Kouta on SEN tonight say that for the Blues to win this week we need to include both Walker and Thorton in the team. I guess he's basing it in on a need for experience for the finals over actual form. If the MC start thinking this way then Davies and Robbo may get dropped.

Thornton's form in the magoos has been good however. Wouldn't be the biggest surprise.

I wouldn't mind seeing some experience returned to the side. We were the third youngest team to hit the park last weekend.

Far to young in finals-like atmosphere.

opposition team targets Judd? how odd!
Yeah, I wasn't all that keen on them bringing McLean in when they mentioned it earlier in the week because of a lack of match fitness but there be some merit to the idea now because he's the only one that can take the heat off the midfielders and do the grunt work and blocking required.

l very much doubt Mclean would be considered this week, simply has not had the preparation, Hadley would be very likely to come back to play that role this week.
Jacobs would also be a good chance to replace Hampson after his ordinary game last week, and Thornton is likely to comeback to replace Davies

I wouldn't change too much TBH.

IN Jacobs
Out Hampson

If Carrazzo is out, Walker to come in. I'd consider dropping Davies because i don't think he's ready. Still does silly stuff, which is understandable for most first year players, we may not want to carry that into a final. Thorton may be the inclusion for to add a little experience down back, sounds like he's playing some good footy in the 2's.

I really think we need to play Hadley, and I wouldn't risk Carrazzo this week unless he is 100% fine to play.

Totally agree.

No point in playing Carrazzo if he is not 100% fit in such an important game.
We could well be left with 3 on the bench again like last week.

Hadley would be very likely to come back to play that role this week.

Hadley doesn't play that role. Doesn't protect his team mates, doesn't hit the packs hard or do the blocking. He's a good handballer who can lay a few tackles but that's about it. Shouldn't get a regular game.

I think you will find the MC have the expectation for Mclean & Hadley to play similar roles, take some heat off Judd in the hard contested ball etc, Mclean has not had the preparation for a final to be considered, Hadley has had reasonable form in the last month, as if Carazzo is unavailable more than likely he will be the one to replace him.

Both have their weaknesses in their games, Hadley is match fit & reasonable form and is much more likely to play than Mclean.
