Unofficial Preview Changes for next week vs @Freo

I can't see how you would expect Ziebell lining up on someone 2m tall is going to end well.

You also left out Treacy who is 195cm or might be switched out for Amiss who is taller.

If they are allowed to dominate in the middle like we have let them the last few times, you don't really want to be that short down back.
I would expect it because I expect Clarkson to persist with an undersized team defense. Ziebell will rotate between the resting ruck, a key forward & a small - as he did this week just gone.

I did miss Treacy/Amiss, however wouldn't be surprised if they go smaller given they lacked run.

We have one forced change, Xerri will come out for I assume Goldy

We have some structural changes we need to consider, Fremantle last week played with 3 KPP + Fyfe up forward.
Taberner 198cm, Jackson 199cm, Treacy 195cm and Fyfe 191cm

I think Corr needs to come in as a minimum, that would give us:
Corr 195cm, Logue 194cm

We have a quartet of 188-190cm players:
Bonar 188, Ziebell 188, McDonald 189 and Goater 190

We are also going to play with Sheezel down back, who is 185cm and a bit skinny.

My gut feel is they will drop Tracey for another runner, Walters only played 3/4 in a WAFL pre-season game so we might dodge that bullet of him returning.

I think we should take Dawson over as an emergency in case they go with a big forward line.

Logue vs Taberner, Corr vs Jackson, Ziebell vs Fyfe (Logue should have more of an idea how Taberner plays, Corr on Jackson who is new for Freo). If Tracey isn't dropped then I think we will need Dawson to cover a third tall.

FB: McDonald Corr Ziebell
HB: Goater Logue Sheezel
C: Shiels LDU Scott
HF: Zurhaar Comben Simpkin
FF: Curtis Larkey Taylor
C: Goldy Cunnington Powell
I: Greenwood Phillips Turner
S: Stephenson

E: Dawson (in case of 3rd tall forward + Fyfe: replace Goater)

This is my minimal changes take.

Out: Bonar Bergman
In: Corr Goldy

I don't think we intended for Sheezel to play a full game down back but it panned out that way. Bonar would be a good candidate to take on Fyfe but without dropping either Ziebell or McDonald options are limited. Goater is more important for defensive rebound, Bonar had 15 disposals for a total of 38m gained so we aren't going very far with his disposals.

I think Bergman is more deserving of his spot than Stephenson but we have too many half-back flankers. As much as Stevo is likely to do nothing, if we lose a mid or forward or need some run he is more likely to do some damage. If we do need to also bring Dawson in I might put Goater as the sub instead of Stevo.
Your interchange is a player short.

Sheezus, Freo have absolutely flogged us lately - 2022 102-24 (WA), 2021 99-48 (WA), 2020 99-35 (GC). We might have better structures than those years, but its quite a tall order to reverse that kind of recent history...

Also overdue to play them in VIC or TAS, this will be the 3rd year in a row that we play them in WA

One of the reasons Freo flog us is that they get hold of Goldy

Yep, they've given us a few hidings

My understanding is that one of the annual requests we make to the AFL regarding our schedule is that we don't play Fremantle in Melbourne.

We get very, very poor home crowds against them.

Clarkson will have given Turner coaches votes for the Syd Barker today. No chance he'll be dropped after his efforts today.
Turner seemed pretty good on the day. Just booting it forward to 3 Eagles in the last few minutes could've been costly though.

Chalk and cheese to see the way players like Sheezel, Powell, Phillips think through a situation quicker. Great intent from Kayne all day though.

sounds kinda reasonable, though I'd argue surely they could schedule some of the annual matches in TAS then

Talking about putting Ziebell on a key forward or resting ruckman is just nonsense though, you might as well put a cardboard cutout of McKay out there, both have the same chance of killing a high ball to someone 2m+. Unless we dominate in the middle I suggest you watch a replay of the Dogs game for an indication of the rogering we are going to receive, and we had McKay for that game.

Freo did lack run but their midfield played shit and their coach refused to put Fyfe in the middle so I think 3 key talls was only part of the problem, they didn't utilise what they had available. I think they might cut Treacy for someone smaller, but they might play Amiss who is mobile enough to play all over the park.

Our issue is the lack of run from our half back flankers, players like Bonar, Ziebell and McDonald don't rebound. They will kick the ball out of the defensive 50 but they don't run. Goater does. Sheezel does. Bonar had zero R50s, had 38m gained, he plays like the most immobile key defender but he can't restrict key forwards. I think he has a lot of potential, but he needs to learn the role and I think atm he is too worried about making mistakes and exploring that role is hard to do at AFL level. The reason Sheezel had 34 disposals is he puts himself into a position to receive the ball and still managed to lead the pressure acts, ground ball gets and was really high up in contested possessions and intercept possessions. He is a first gamer, extremely talented but he knows where he needs to be and what he has to do. He has the smarts that a lot of our players lack.

Our ideal defensive setup... with what we have available is:
FB: McDonald McKay Corr
HB: Goater Logue Sheezel

But, we are not going to drop Ziebell. Unless he goes forward to replace someone who might get injured, we have to suck it up this year.

Is it nonsense if it's a fairly high chance of actually happening? McKay isn't available...

Our back 6 this week will be (or close to):
FB - LMac - Logue - Bonar
HB - Goater - Ziebell - Sheezel
+ Bergman/Corr

I don't see them playing Dawson.
Logue will get their best forward (Tabener) & even then, he's playing off intercepting, expecting Ziebell/Bonar/LMac to cover for him.

Who else is playing on the resting ruck? It's either Bonar or Ziebell for the majority, in a team defense.

Interesting to set expectations for this week.

Freo were up and running last year but St Kilda showed a method of beating them with an 'inferior' group in round 1. While the WA home advantage can be immense, Clarkson's Hawthorn teams never shirked from taking it up to an opponent interstate.

It might be too early to expect that but everything coming out from this regime is that we are setting very clear expectations around wanting to win and competing for the win every single game. Seems obvious but maybe playing groups need to have these simple focuses brought to their attention to really grasp them.

Apart from a win these would be good outcomes:

  • Stay in the game for the full period. If we get blown away let it be by superior talent and experience, not intent
  • +1 game of experience for Bergman, Goater, Comben
  • Incremental development from Bonar, Stephenson, Taylor respective to their careers
  • Teammates to support Sheezel if he draws close attention in game #2
  • LDU to set his Round 1 as a baseline level with another strong performance
  • Forward movement to show adaptability in dealing with quality intercepting defenders
  • No injuries

Jackson is playing a hybrid unicorn Ruck/quasi midfielder and his forward prowess has always been fairly questionable.

I'd comfortably back in a Bonar or JZ to take Fyfe, a sad indictment of where Fyfe is at with his footy.

Tbh this is not a tall forward line that is overly threatening, but they do get a lot of goals from Schulz and Switkowski. Playing small is the way to go.
Jackson didn’t take a single mark on the weekend. Freo played a chip kick around the back style that would have been shit for him. Saints didn’t allow any other style. Lyon out coached Longmuir, so if our boys can do what Clarko wants we should be right in this.

one of the issues is playing them during day light saving. Its the equivalent of a 10pm start for our boys body clocks, and it makes a difference.

Is it a high chance? McKay and Corr weren't available. Corr should be available. Dawson was an emergency last week but Eagles only went in with Oscar Allen and Darling (who is only 191cm). I am sure the club felt it could cover the Eagles... a point i made on the Eagles board and they thought it was funny...

I'm not as convinced about Fremantle though, they are a lot bigger and more of them.

I just think it is delusional to expect Bonar, Ziebell, etc to spoil players almost 2m tall, there is like a zero body of evidence of them being remotely capable of doing it with any kind of expectation.

You might as well put Sheezel and Goater on their key forwards, they have almost as much chance of effecting a spoil but at least those two can rebound.

If we do not pick key defenders to play against key forwards it is footy suicide, our only hope would be to completely dominate in the middle so the ball doesn't go into our defensive 50.

I think we there is a significant chance that Clarkson will be committing what you define as footy suicide this weekend.

Bonar's performance against McKay was pretty good. He can play on bigger players but it isn't ideal.

I guess we will have to wait and see, why bother keeping Corr or trying to re-sign McKay if you think some high 180cm defenders are good enough?

I would bring TT in for Stephenson. That’s a big upgrade even if TT is at 80%.

With Freos season ended last Sunday it will be interesting to see how they bounce back. If they can’t beat a VFL saints side they gave zero chance against the better sides.
0% chance of that change mate
