Interesting to set expectations for this week.

Freo were up and running last year but St Kilda showed a method of beating them with an 'inferior' group in round 1. While the WA home advantage can be immense, Clarkson's Hawthorn teams never shirked from taking it up to an opponent interstate
I don't know about inferior group (season as always will determine that) but I have thought for a while early this year is about the best time to get Fremantle. They've been developing really well over the last few years but lost a handful of players in those real prime years last year (not least Logue amongst them) which will reasonably take some time to sort out and cover.

My understanding is that one of the annual requests we make to the AFL regarding our schedule is that we don't play Fremantle in Melbourne.

We get very, very poor home crowds against them.
How many requests do you think we get to make? After the Good Friday request, I doubt that we waste the limited number of allowable requests beyond that on please not Fremantle at home.

I think anyone who watched Freo play would fancy their chances, especially nmfc with a pumped up skill level and quicker more aggressive squad

The psychology of just dropping players like pawns on a board is deeply flawed It is much more likely to be ‘ winning team are winners’ and any changes minimal

The Bonar debate will continue but he has attributes that Corr doesn’t
Corr is 195 and sort of gangly
Bones is 190 and built
JZ is 32, he looks good , kicking was excellent and having some talent nearby Sheez and Goat and Bergs surely helps
But those 3 have played 5 games

I would drop Stepho/ Taylor bring Corr in for the talls
Try the Goat in different spots, still think wing could suit
mate spot on.

Talking about putting Ziebell on a key forward or resting ruckman is just nonsense though, you might as well put a cardboard cutout of McKay out there, both have the same chance of killing a high ball to someone 2m+. Unless we dominate in the middle I suggest you watch a replay of the Dogs game for an indication of the rogering we are going to receive, and we had McKay for that game.

Freo did lack run but their midfield played s**t and their coach refused to put Fyfe in the middle so I think 3 key talls was only part of the problem, they didn't utilise what they had available. I think they might cut Treacy for someone smaller, but they might play Amiss who is mobile enough to play all over the park.

Our issue is the lack of run from our half back flankers, players like Bonar, Ziebell and McDonald don't rebound. They will kick the ball out of the defensive 50 but they don't run. Goater does. Sheezel does. Bonar had zero R50s, had 38m gained, he plays like the most immobile key defender but he can't restrict key forwards. I think he has a lot of potential, but he needs to learn the role and I think atm he is too worried about making mistakes and exploring that role is hard to do at AFL level. The reason Sheezel had 34 disposals is he puts himself into a position to receive the ball and still managed to lead the pressure acts, ground ball gets and was really high up in contested possessions and intercept possessions. He is a first gamer, extremely talented but he knows where he needs to be and what he has to do. He has the smarts that a lot of our players lack.

Our ideal defensive setup... with what we have available is:
FB: McDonald McKay Corr
HB: Goater Logue Sheezel

But, we are not going to drop Ziebell. Unless he goes forward to replace someone who might get injured, we have to suck it up this year.
I agree with the above ideal set up and I have bonar as the 7th defender rotating off the bench

With McKay not available it probably allows the below of ziebell to stay in as the 7th defender

FB: McDonald Corr Bonar
HB: Goater Logue Sheezel
I: Ziebell

berg out for corr

then eventually mckay in for ziebell, and bonar comes off the bench to play any role in defence (tall, medium or small)

People need stop judging Bonar until he gets the opportunity to play on someone his own size. The poor bloke has to play as the 2nd key back and we kept the two of them to what 3 goals?

Give him a break ffs

i think we.need to.persist with Bergman because of.his run and kicking. I would prefer Taylor.out for Corr. While im not a fan of Turner, i think Clarko is due to the pressure he applies defensively in our forward half. I think Turner may play on Young this week

Nah CT is important for linking up through the wings and half forward and being a threat around goals

The only definite change is Goldie in for X.

I think Corr will come in but at who's expense I am not sure.

There are pros and cons for each of the following (in no particular order) to remain in the team and generally the pros outweigh the cons.

Bonar
Scott
Stepho
Berg
Goat
PC
WilPhil

Having genuine competition for spots is a very nice dilemma to have.

Apart from Clarko does anyone know who else is on the match committee?
it would be todd viney and the coaching group

It might be too early to expect that but everything coming out from this regime is that we are setting very clear expectations around wanting to win and competing for the win every single game. Seems obvious but maybe playing groups need to have these simple focuses brought to their attention to really grasp them.

Apart from a win these would be good outcomes:

  • Stay in the game for the full period. If we get blown away let it be by superior talent and experience, not intent
  • +1 game of experience for Bergman, Goater, Comben
  • Incremental development from Bonar, Stephenson, Taylor respective to their careers
  • Teammates to support Sheezel if he draws close attention in game #2
  • LDU to set his Round 1 as a baseline level with another strong performance
  • Forward movement to show adaptability in dealing with quality intercepting defenders
  • No injuries
My expectation is a hard fought loss but I won't rule out a win.

My biggest concern in this match isn't the defensive matchups that everyone is arguing about. Big forwards don't worry me as much as small forwards. If Walters is out then I feel pretty good.

My biggest concern is that we will loft it up into the forward 50 all day and the Freo backmen will have marking practice for a 2nd week in a row.

I wouldn't rule out Sheezel moving forward in the 2nd half and breaking the game open.

Freo were very underwhelming on the weekend. They might look better at home against us but poorly they played gives me more hope than how well we played.

The only change might be Goldy for Xerri, plus whoever doesn't recover well enough.

Out of the box... Corr for Xerri and stick with no ruck (jk).

Have a look at the last quarter again. Turner was remarkably valuable. Made some wonderful tackles.

It's lucky they put this out though. Otherwise we would have definitely expected Fyfe not to try this week.

Sheezel first kick went straight to them. Haters gunna hate. He will stay in. Get over it.
Agreed. There's plenty of time this season for others to stake their claim on his spot if they have the drive, body and dedication.

I did comment to myself at the time, similar to the great Tommy Powell iirc. Tommy trying to hit CHB while Harry hit his to around the HBF. Just a skinny 1st kick, new ball and all.
