Stole my thunder

Shirley and Doughty gone....Delist ASAP

Maric and Massie in.

Tippett can then play Permanent FF.

If Reilly is injured, Bring in Jericho. Play him on the wing and just let him run run run

At the end of the day we are playing the Weagles. We cant beat the anyway;). So may as well try a few things.

I'm with you but I'd bring in Campbell and leave Doughty in. :thumbsu:

Whilst I too was thinking of dropping Vince, IMO he needs to be given a few games to prove his worth. You can't judge youngsters after a game & dropping them straight away doesn't help with the confidence. We can't afford a yo-yo selection policy.

BTW, IMO Vince will be a better player than Campbell, as he has an X-factor, which Campbell doesn't. Campbell will get his chance sooner rather than later though if he continues BOG performances.

Exactly, we need to give these young ones confidence. It's not going to be a premiership season. It should be all about learning. You can't do that if your not in the side.

In: Maric

Out: Reilly (wrist)

I would make plenty of changes (Shirley and Doughty) but I suspect the match committee will only make the one change this week. Ivan Maric should come in for the injured Brent Reilly. Ivan Maric will play as that second ruckman and allow Kurt Tippett to move to the forward line.

Hopefully the match committee give David MacKay another go as in his limited game time he looked good. If someone is dropped it may be him for Bryce Campbell.

I agree but I also hope Neil Craig finds the confidence in theses young player to give them more playing time. They are not going to get better by sitting on the bench.

Their has to be a mix of older and younger players. He is 28 but obviously that is the new 35. I am all for injecting fresh blood into the team, and that has been my major gripe for the last few seasons but players have to be ready.

For the record here are Doughty's stats from yesterday.

16 possessions ( 11 other players saw less of the ball)
7 contested possessions
4 tackles
3 frees for
0 against
1 inside 50
1 clearance
3 marks

Keep in mind spent most of the day in defence.

Now here is the stat you have all been waiting for

2 clangers

Other players who had 2 or more clangers. Goodwin, Porplyzia, Thompson, Van Berlo, Griffin, Vince, Shirley, Symes.

I didn't think Van Berlo had two touches, so am surprised to hear he had two clangers.

I like Van Berlos guts and his stamina, his skills are pretty sharp too, but he does not get enough of the pill, IMO.

I'd drop Vince over Mackay if one of them had to be dropped. But I think your suggested change should be all that is made.

One change this week for mine!

IN: Maric
OUT: Reilly (inj)

I think Cox is going to cause us MAJOR, MAJOR problems so I would like to have the flexibility of throwing a few different things at him and with Griffin, Maric and Tippett we have a chance to attack him with different styles if nothing else.

Now that Reilly is officially out we need the likes of Shirley in the side. I would be really tempted to bring in Massie though!

This week would've been perfect for young Bradley Moran to line up on the big shaft (Cox) and tag him out of existence :(

OUT: Reilly

IN: Maric

I really wanna see Massie break into the side in the next couple of weeks. Provides us with a fair bit of flexibility and means against shorter sides we can nudge Stevo up the ground.

OUT: Reilly (inj), Shirley

IN: Maric, Campbell (or Massie)

regardless of whether it was a mismatch or not for 10 minutes, Shirley played poorly and has done so for the whole pre-season as well as lots of last season - its time his gold pass expired - i'ld try Campbell for at least 3 consecutive games

This week is a MUST WIN game for us because we need to get over our WC hoodoo if we are to go forward as a side.
I like the following ins and outs:
IN:
Maric, Campbell, Massie
OUT:
Reilly (inj), Mackay, Shirley

Tough call on Mackay I know but it would be like throwing him to the wolves by playing him against the big bodies of WC.

Shirley can barely run atm so he needs a week or two off to recover.

They won't drop Mackay on that effort ......whilst his possessions weren't high he has the great ability to run and carry ....making him a 100mtr player.

If you notice his natural inclination is to turn inwards and run through the corridor kicking deep.

There's not many 1st year players I have seen that can at the last minute change the angle of their kick 45 degrees to where their body is running ......no he'll be perservered with maybe getting 3-4 game blocks depending on injuries.

Maric will come in and probably Massie ......although if Campbell doesn't get picked you would have to query his role at the club.

Now lets review how many of our list there is to choose from:

40 on main list ......+ 4 rookies

Biglands, Hentschell, Reilly ....long term injuries
Dangerfield ........year 12
Gill, Gallman, Knights, Moran .....short term injuries
Walker, Kite, Armstrong, Cook ......just plain not ready

That's 12 from a 40 strong list ....giving us 28 to choose from

If we have many injuries at all this year ....we may yet play Dangerfield on basis last man standing.

Interestingly apart from those listed above and those 22 who played against the Bulldogs .......there are only 5 other listed players considered smalls or midfielders:
Jacky, Jericho, Campbell, Otten & Massie ......not exactly a great backup support team ATS if we keep losing midfielders .....hence the Dangerfield cheeky comment ;)

In: Maric, Campbell
Out: Reilly (inj), Vince (omit)

He might be in ordinary form but I can't believe Maric was dropped. He MUST play as it enables Tippett to play permanently up forward.

Campbell was an emergency against the Dogs and he was BOG for Norwood on Thursday. Given Reilly's injury, he comes in. Vince is dropped because he's not an AFL standard player. Thanks for coming Bernie.

Doughty made some costly errors but I thought he did some good work. Shirley is rubbish but we all know how much he is valued by the coaching staff.

Agree on first paragraph
Campbell in for Shirley ok
Vince comment your a tosser:rolleyes: see if this comment holds weight at yrs end
Agree on last paragraph

I agree with everything you have said Stiffy - we need options agains Cox/Seaby.

Probably just the 1 change you mention, but if Shirley isn't convincing on the track then Massie would be my 2nd change, as he has the flexibility to do a run-with role on say an Embley or play in defence. Would have been handy last week!

If you watched DMac play against Freo then you wouldn't have any issues in throwing him into big bodied players. He did some very nice things in that match in close. Give him a few games together and you'll see why he must play!

Whether we make the finals this year was always going to come down to injuries as we no longer have the depth until the younger players develop.

We need to start getting back more players than losing them to injuries or we will be in strife.

This is the thing....Shirley may have been saved by Reilly's injury.

I would still make the Shirley / Massie swap - but Craig will go with the one forced change.

...and for all those suggesting Vince to be dropped for Campbell...

----> :rolleyes: <----

Campbell is a good honest footballer - but that's about it.

My thoughts on Massie too, he offers us that little bit more flexibility than a shirley in that he can play a run with role in the midfield as well as being able to play that bit taller in defence if required.

Also agree re bringing Maric back in to combat the Cox/Seaby combo and I think we'll need Tippet up forward, even if not to kick heaps of goals, but just to provide that contest and take a tall, eg Glass or Hunter away from a Mcgregor, Burton or Goodwin etc. Either that or expose the fact that he doesn't have to play on them because the others are.

Shirley definite to miss, Stevens probably 70-30 after coming off second best in a contest, Symes with a couple of sore spots but right to play.

Out: Reilly, Shirley

In: Maric, Campbell/Massie

Aye. Assuming Shirely doesn't come up,

Maric in for Reilly
Massie in for Shirley.

Tippett up forward, Massie to defence, or tagging role if required. Two midfielders for a ruckman and a utility might seem like we're going in too tall, but we've got no shortage of midfielders in the side at the moment. Goodwin/Edwards/McLeod/Symes/Porps/Doughty/VB/Massie/Thommo/Vince/Douglas/Mackay provide us with enough in the midfield/flanks, and we probably played a tall or two less than usual against the smalldogs. We'll need one extra to cover their forwardline, which is a fair bit bigger than Footscray's. Massie is probably our best match for Embley, given that Bassett collapsed at 3/4 time on Johnson, and Stevens, whilst in awesome form, is both sore and too slow. I'd like to see Kris in the side even if Shirely comes up - perhaps at the expense of Fred, who needs to get on the bikes.

B: Johncock Rutten Bassett
HB: Stevens Bock Massie
C: Douglas Thompson Symes
HF: Edwards Burton Porplyzia
F: McLeod McGregor Tippett
R: Griffin Goodwin van Berlo
I: Maric Mackay Vince Doughty

E: Campbell Otten Jericho

We'll need to use Goodwin and Edwards through the middle more than we'd have hoped, with the loss of Reilly and Knights, but I'd also hope to see Mackay, Douglas, Vince and Porplyzia spend more time in there too, but not so much that we're uncompetitive. We want them to learn, but not at the expense of matches. It's a delicate balance, and they will take some time.

One final thought: It's a big week for van Berlo. Had his worst game for a while last week, although some of that was thanks to a knock to the eye in the second, and an off the ball hit by Minson in the 4th. Couldn't find the ball, and went missing a bit. With Shirley gone, we need him to play a big game on Kerr, and also step up with some attacking flair, with Knights and Reilly gone. His performance this week is pivotal to victory. Thompson also needs to step up after last week.

Just had a look at his stats from the weekend, his 16 possessions came from 94% game time, only Burton had less possessions (1) from more game time and he kicked 5 goals.

could it be more obvious?

a player getting 94% game time is plainly doing what is asked of him by the coaching staff.

The 2 maych up's yhay concern me are

1. Kerr, IMO VB is the obvious choice

2. Embly, if Embly plays in the midfield, I am happy for our midfield to take him on head to head, however, if he pushes forward we need to find the right match up.

For this reason I would maybe look at a Massie before Campbell, however Campbell may get a call up if NC has Steven's in mind for Embly

agree with all that.....:thumbsu:
