The midfield has been subpar for years. Too reliant on the talent of Bell, and pitch in efforts of Carr, Headland or another. We've struggled to get consistency from them as a group for over 2 years.

However, two years ago our forward line was functioning fine, even in the face of a second rate midfield. What's obvious now is that both our forward line AND midfield are playing at a second rate level.

The decision not to draft strongly at the end of 2006 and chase a trade is coming back to bite us hard. It will only compound in years to come as the loss of our more talented players (Wiz, Bell) starts to hurt us.

I will probably get laughed of the site and please this is only a suggestion out of left field and suggesting it breaks my heart but would it be too crazy to trade of the Pav for top draught picks ie natanui and rich
plus our own picks & with Palmer,Mayne etc it could set us up big time in 3-4 years time ala Hawthorn

I was not booing him, I'm just pointing out the fact that he hasn't performed anywhere near what he should. Hie recent performances warrant targeting him over others. He had 13 disposals and one goal in his first two games and thats after coming off a season where many believed that he hasn't performed at the level he should given that we sold the farm to get him over here.

H e has shown nothing to change my stubbornly negative opinion yet.

How about these names who played so much worse than Tarrant today.

Peake,B.
Carr,J.
Mundy,D.
Grover,A.
Schammer, B
Gilmore, D.
Dodd, S.

I was busy playing footy so unfortunately or appears not so i didn't see the game so this is what i think from what i have heard:

In: Foster, Obrien, Drum/Mi Johnson(heard he didnt play?), If Injuries: Hinkley/Ibbotson
Out: Peake, Thorton, Duffield, Injured: Headland/Hayden ???

Foster showed alot and was one of our best players in the 3 games he played last year bring him in, Obrien imo was ripped off of the rising star nomination in the last game and was close to best on ground in that game bring him in and play him as a tagger if needed.

Appears to me that we are a hell of a long way off the pace and its time to rebuild to be in contention next year if we go well or in 2010

Harsh on Gilmore, he tried his very best today I thought and actually looked like trying to run down some Richmond players. Players like Peake are ones that should be shipped off to the WAFL not to return unless he can use his pace to put pressure on the opposition.

Peake is the slowest player in out team when he doesnt have the ball, its disgusting. Thornton and Mundy also dogged a few chases today.

Apart from Peake (who should be dropped), they have played decent footy of late and warrant some slack taken off. Schammer played well in the derby and I have spared him. Tarrant hasn't played any decent footy of late.

Got locked in the toilet for the whole first half?
I paid particular attention to his game.

His disposal was shizen

Agree it wasnt up to par but he was genuinely trying today, did some very good chases. Its just unfortunate that I though he was one of our better players today, thats how bad the rest of the team was.

After today's game, I guess it may be more than we can ask for, but is trying really good enough? I don't think trying is going to win us any flags. I've been a Gilmore knocker for a long time, and I thought he showed today that he really doesn't have a place in the team (not a backman, not a forward, not a ruckman). His strength is his long kicking, and he just doesn't use it often enough or well enough.

On Michael Johnson, why the rush to bring him back in? When's the last time he played a good game? I certainly can't remember.

Harvs needs to see who has let him down in the past month and send them packing. If he's going to give players like Mundy or Peake another chance, they need to be put on notice, if they play like that again next week, in a month or whenever, they will spend a month in the WAFL.

He needs to look into every nook and cranny of this list and see what's worth persisting with and what needs to be removed (an awful lot I'm afraid). If he does that by the end of the season, I'll be happy.

OUT:
Thornton (if he is not willing to run to create from back half, why was he selected?)
Tarrant (better today, but still crappola, doesn't chase enough or hard enough + when he does eventually get a mark he never runs off)
Duffield (As always...plays 1 good game & is crappola for the next month. didn't want to chase or create today)
Peake (Just 9 possies - not enough for a midfielder. Was either Peake or Schammer to miss out in midfield for mine, but as it is in Adelaide & Schamemr often plays well at Aami, Schammer gets yet another chance)
Mundy (Has played 2 blinders & 2 shockers. When he chases he jogs, when he creates - he jogs. Can't tackle. Needs to learn consistency again thru the Wafl)

IN;
Johnson (self explanatory)
Black (at least adds skill...though discipline is definitely in question ATM)
O'Brien (adds pace & hardness to midfield)
Drum (simply better than Thornton)
Murphy (deserves next month to play at Full Forward & lets learn one way or another whether he is our future leading goalkicker or not)

LAST CHANCE;
Headland (started like a house on fire, but has done nothing for 2 weeks straight...was he injured today?)
Crowley (doesn't play team football..makes wrong decisions with foot skills....would Foster, Hinkley or Ibbotson be better options?)

Seriously if Harvey had any sense he would be telling Gilmore to play the same roll that Clinton Young plays, run all day getting marks and kicking long to our key forwards so that the opposition doesnt have the time to get back. Watch Hawthorn play and you will see what Gilmore should be doing.

Gilmore was one of our better players today - at least he always plays like it's his last game. Dodd has been great this season before today. Taz showed a bit.

Mundy still doesn't work hard enough but I doubt his spot is in jeopardy. Josh hasn't been great, but should get one more chance, same with Schammer. Duff was no good today but give him one more week too.

Peake is the obvious out this week, along with Thornton. Des might be out injured. Although Rhys and Nockers were pretty shizen, they should persist with the youngsters.

In: O'Brien, Drum/Johnson, Ibbo

Out: Peake, Thornton, Duffield?

Honestly think Warnock's spot is in doubt though.

Have to agree. He showed flashes of what he can do in the centre square but didn't do enough around the ground. We can't carry 2 ruckmen who do nothing around the ground or up forward - we can't rely on our midfielders to pick up the slack.

Thornton looked underdone. Showed he's no good on a decent forward again and provided no run which is what he's there for.

Drum HAS to play ahead of him.

Duffman was great last week but he's being played out of position. He's not a backman and definitely shouldn't be manning a marking forward. He never plays down back in the wafl so why put him down there at a higher level??? He looked far better and more attacking when switched onto the ball late in the game. Unfortunately I dont think he did enough there to save his bacon.

Ive bagged Peake for weeks and will do it again - Crap, no heart, won't chase his opponent, weak in the contest, can't tackle.

Schammer was poor. Was great last week but reverted back to his old ways. Cant seem to stay on his feet in a contest and always fumbles.

Dodd, Grover, Hayden, Sandi, Mundy, Josh need to lift their game. Gilmore needs to be settled in a position somewhere or given a running role.

Solly and Des get let off coz they were injured. Palmer gets let off coz he's young and can't play blinders every week.

OUT: Peake, Thornton, Duff, Warnock.
INS: O'Brien, Drum, Johnson, Ibbo.

Wouldn't surprise to see Ma Johnson, Macca or Matt Carr get selected tho

Looking at the WAFL fixtures and East Freo have the bye. If McManus, Matt Carr, Ibbo and Foster aren't selected, it's a lot of players to have not getting a hit out (you can add in Dunn and Mourish too). I'd like to see both McManus and Matt Carr string together 2 or 3 really strong performances in the WAFL before they come into the team, but wonder whether this will sway the selection committee's thoughts?

As long as Foster and Obrien come in not at the expense of Mayne or Palmer which won't occur anyway as they have been playing well (relative anyway) i'll be happy. M Carr, McManus and Ma Johnson shouldn't play again unless the are absolutely dominating the WAFL.

I think a big thing lacking in our game is the 1% - the shepherd & blocking. Also the bloody tackling I think this has beena weakness all year, and this is something I thought I would never say with Harvey, Scott and Wallis as coaches. There seems to be a real technical flaw as tackles are broken or maybe it is a desire thing I dont know. I would have to say that Tarrant is a guy who did do the blocking and shepherding, ie the McPharlin point.

So in saying this maybe a OBrien would be handy to come in and Michael Johnson. Drop Warnock (no use having 2 bean poles if you only have 1 of them in the square for 10 minutes of the game and the one they used was the wrong one) and Thornton. Give the rest another chance and they all should stay in until after the Cats game because they should all be publicly shamed by Geelong, after that performance

Today also clearly showed. You need a tagger. You can get away with not playing a tagger in away games but at Subi the gun midfielders find too much space and can be too damaging. I lost count the amount of times Nathan Foley delivered it inside50.

The only 2 players for your lot who are even close to playing this role are Brock O Brien or Mark Johnson. Johnson wouldnt have the leg speed anymore so Brock O Brien it is. Has to start every game and every minute. Some defensive aspects of your midfield (shepherds blocks) were non existant today

Too true. The problem is that we don't have an offensive tagger. M Carr is very defensive, he just doesn't hurt the opposition.
We don't have a full back either, while we're at it.

i just posted this on the WAFL Performance thread but related here as well....

went down to the south v west perth game on sat and caught the second half of the ressies game - my mate said drum had 37 touches and kicked 3 - must be a certain starter for next week..... i know its only ressies but what more does this kid need to do ?????

after this week harves has to at least give him a go to prove what hes got !
