Changes For Next Week

You tit. Four injuries means that the oldies are less likely to have an impact, not more likely. Has the trend of increased interchanges over the last few seasons completely bypassed you? How?

We have some obvious problems no doubt. But we lost to Melbourne because of injuries.

Agree that five is too many. Doughty must go for mine.

Listen nipple, does his age and the lack of rotations actually mean he is excused from going hard at the ball or laying an effective tackle? If injuries mean he becomes more of a liability then surely we cant afford to keep this icing on the cake.

good news is that Stiffy, VB and Stevens are likely to be availabe for selection next week and you would think SMACK may come into contention

you'll flog us this week, we'll virtually be fielding a SANFL side

sanfl side

today's side was a strong side

yes, Danger, Bock, Hentchel and Tippett are likely to miss however Stiffy, VB and Stevens should come back in

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that for the rest of our entire history, we will lose every game where we lose our entire bench to game-ending injuries. No matter what we do, or who we play, or how old our players are, or who our coach is.

I know that's a long time but I'm pretty confident.

Knights has a game under his belt

Burton and Porps have two

they will all be better next week

In defence - Johncock is what we have most missed IMO - his skill, attack on the footy, run and KICK INS are crucial to our game plan

Carlton do not appear to have a forward line - Stevo to CHB (on Setanta)

Tippett might come back, it looked like a twisted/sprained ankle. Then again, he's been nearly useless all season due to knee tendinitis, so a week or two off might do him the world of good.

Very hard to see any of the others being ready to go next week.

Hard to know at this stage, you'd say Bock would be a couple of weeks with a hamstring, Tippett with his ankle could make it up for next week, but I'd give him a couple, at least he'll get a bit of time to rest that knee. Hentschel and Dangerfield are still very much up in the air, the extent of their injuries are a real unknown, they could both potentially get up for next week, but then could miss some serious time. We'll know soon enough, at least Dangerfield appears to be okay.

How do you figure that? Especially with Tippett going down. Now's the time for Taylor to play FF and be 1 out in the square and on the lead. He could have a huge week next week vs the Blues, we just don't know.

Agree, Walker needs to head to full forward, he seemed to work his way into the match as the game wore on. We then need to bring Davis and McKernan in to play that higher CHF role, with McKernan doubling as the 2nd ruck/tall defender in the stevens swing role. Our forward line tactics need to be seriously reworked however, needs to be based on hard leading, not big bombs to the goal square all the time.

Anyway, here are my changes:

Stevens for Bock
Davis for Hentschel
McKernan for Tippett
van Berlo for Dangerfield
Stiffy for Doughty

We were already low on talls, with Stevens dropping out, we went into that match with 2 KPFs(Walker, Tippett), 1 ruckman and 3 KPD's (Rutten, Bock and Hentschel). That's why I think we've got to bring in the three talls in Davis, McKernan and Stevens. Young's also a consideration, but I think Davis would give us a better forward option to cover Tippett and McKernan has more versatility.

Doughty misses out because I think its time for our senior players to get a bit of a kick up the rear end and Doughty's the example. Has really struggled to maintain the high standard he's set in the past couple of years and Schmidt showed that he was more than capable of playing a similar role.

I'm going out on a limb that you for our entire history if Mcleod doesnt play another decent game, lay an effective tackle or put his body on the line you will be happy for him to remain in the side.

I do not believe Mcleod and Edwards should have played on. Todays loss is not the reason I think this, I thought it last year. We have too many oldies and we can only have so much icing in our team, we need players to go in hard, to be desperate not accept at a certain age they dont need to contribute in this way. The game is too fast to carry players.

I dont know where you got this "carrying players" (McLeod & Edwards) thing from: in McLeod's case, he was in our POTY top 6 in each of the first 2 games.

But we were shit in those first 2 games, thats hardly saying anything.

If we drop Edwards than we definately have to drop McLeod.

Bullshit. Edwards cannot hit the side of a barn thats 15 metres in front of him. Macca has provided great run. Today was not his best, but he has been more than handy in the 1st 2 games. Edwards certainly deserves to be dropped, but won't due to injuries. Macca does not. Get your hand off it.

Nice to see some sense from somebody

He's still in our best though. Doesn't that mean the youngsters need to pull their thumb out of their arses and get into the games. Don't leave it to the Macca's, Doughty's and Goody's, where are the Vince's, Thompson's etc that should be leading the way

No-one will be dropped due to form. Injured players will be replaced. That is all.

Hentschell out, Davis in (or Young)
Tippett out, McKernan in
Dangerfield out, Jaensch in
Bock out, Stevens in
Edwards out, Johncock in

For those criticising Doughty, you obviously didn't get to see what was going on off Tv screen. Honestly he would have individiaully saved about 8 goals today with his gut busting chasing and hard at the ball and body attacks. I know he burnt the ball a bit (as did everyone, the wind was very swirly and difficult to judge), but he was in our best.

Edwards still doesn't man up and now is so hopeless with the ball, he can't do any damage. It won't happen, but he should be out.

The team then:
Johncock Rutten Davis
Schmidt Stevens Goodwin
Mackay Thompson Cook
Knights Burton Petrenko
McLeod Walker McKernan

Maric Vince Doughty

Reilly Jaensch Porplyzia Douglas

Still an OK team, if they put the effort in.

Taylor Walker should be the first one gone. Closely followed by Edwards.

Considering that we can pretty much write this season off, making Burton our number one focus and not investing game time into Walker would be the worst thing that we could possibly do

Carlton do not appear to have a forward line - Stevo to CHB (on Setanta)
And we do?

Carlton have outscored us by 105 points in the first 3 rounds (283 to 178). Only Richmond have scored less than Adelaide (168 points). For us to say that another team doesn't have a forward line is laughable.

I know it isnt in the future, but werent we down to 17 fit players when we beat Port in the showdown in 2008 ??

So you are saying that we have four players in our side that we shouldnt be relying on ??? Those 4 players make up 50% of our midfield and half back positions yet you are saying that we shouldnt be relying on any of them to put in a match winning performance anymore  If we are going into a game with a structure like that we arent going to be winning too many games this year.

Maybe if you include players who copped knocks but kept playing.

Not really going out on a limb Carl. You are absolutely spot on and common sense to anyone with half a brain.

looks that way doesn't it?

not sure what happened to this deep list we were building.
The list is deep on talent but a lot of that talent is not ready to carry the team.

For example, someone like Cook is talented (although, I am not convinced he is going to be more than just a solid AFL player. His disposal is horrible) and he would be able to hold a lesser role in the side if everyone is up and firing, or you miss a 15-25 player from your team. However, if you lose a 1-10 player on your team to injury, Cook is not ready to carry the load.

Similar thing can be said about a lot of our youngsters. They need to be played in a role where they are contributing but they are not THE key players for us. Because of injuries we are asking these players to have greater roles for which they are just not ready yet.
