Thoughts, everyone?

Grimes is definitely out, and Trengove is looking like he wont be able to play either.

So...
OUTs: Grimes, Trengove.
also possible: Bate, Warnock

INs:
Rivers, anyone know the status of his injury?
Martin surely deserves his spot back. Jamar is going to melt from overwork.

Very harsh on Warnock, I thought he was brilliant on the weekend.Bate should get another chance I think, he did some good things. I'd bring in Morton and Bennell if Trengove is out. I'd like to see Maric play more in the midfield as well.

apparently jamar is out as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

****

martin in is a must, and he WILL need adequate back up

gawn in to ruck against petrie? he has a good 13cm's on him

Jamar out is huge. Goldy is reaching some very good form (killed Brogan) and could be key. It does suck we're playing each other when both sides have quality players out but.

The russian is by far our most important player, with absolute no back up ruckman at all.

I really fear for the next few weeks he is out. I think we will be lucky to win any to be honest. He is just that important.

We saw against West Coast how badly no ruck can hurt you: if we'd had one of Petrie, Goldstein or HMac playing we'd have won by three goals. More if we had two.

Gawn isn't really a proposition is he?

EDIT TO CLARIFY: I mean Gawn is not a proposition in that he's not big or hardened enough to take on the likes Goldy or Petrie who have a few season (many in Dish's case) under their belt.

head up, may give the GAWN a chance, he is a huge unit

EDIT:

it would be a massive test for Gawn SLF, but i'm not sure we have any other real options, his height is a massive bonus though

True.

Pedersen stood up for us when his back was against the wall in Rd1. Then got crapped on last week and revealed himself to be the VFL player he is.

Gawn is more talented than Mr Bubbles and if you have no other options could well be worth the shot.

Really tough to tell what Bailey will do this week at the selection table. Personally, I feel we have to beat them now with pace. Bennell and Blease may get a game due to this reason, as might Morton or Nicholson.

I think it would be harsh throwing Gawn to the wolves this weekend! Martin has to come in and ruck for most of the day. There is nothing wrong with his fitness, but he will be dominated in the tapouts department. The other good thing about Martin, is he can and has played in defense, and might need to in patches against Petrie and Goldstein. Still, if our midfielders are smart enough, they will rove to Goldsteins taps. The other option we have is the third man up at the tapouts. Obviously can't do them at the centre square bounces, but around the ground, we can have Watts or Dunn come over the top. Watts seemed to do this well against Adelaide at times.

If we miraculously win on Saturday, it will be a massive effort. Our defence should be ok, and our forwards are all dangerous. It's in the midfield now with Grimes, Trengove and Jamar out that we need to break even in. We do that somehow, we are a chance...

We may well be tempted to leave Mr Bubbles in the side and try and exploit you for height on this analysis: have Petrie and Hansen forward and Goldy and Bubbles in the ruck wearing your guys down.

EDIT AGAIN - I know Blease is very highly rated but is he ready for senior footy in terms of both being over his injury and also body size? Atley, who has played well for us, got shown up for size against the likes of Bartel last week.

Now we don't have any Jimmy Bartels but Blease is even lighter than Atley on my recollection and could find the going tough no?

It's an interesting one. I will want a first choice ruck. Stef Martin and Newton are KPP come 2nd string rucks. Leigh Brown would never play as first ruck.

Really rate Max Gawn but not sure we should be throwing him in. Robbie Campbell is one week back from long term injury.

Think we will have to suck it up and play Martin.

Personally, I think you would be crazy to not have 2 ruckman in your side now that Jamar is injured. It is possible that Gawn will be selected as well as Martin as the back up. I still doubt Bailey will pick Gawn. It's literally his first season and he's fragile.

Don't underestimate Martin's fitness. He can go all day if needed. He's also gotten a lot stronger in the upper body so he can compete in the tapouts. He just lacks the football smarts, and this is where your ruckman can tear him open. Goldstein kicked 5 on us a couple of years ago, he just may do the same this weekend! But like I said, we have to empliy a third man up at the ball ups and throw ins. Watts and dunn have done this effectively in the past.

Would playing Gawn jeapordise his long term future? Last I saw he was still a stick. If he gets crunched we might lose our best prospect post Jamar. Surely long term future > beating North (just).

I'm going to work on the provisional basis of Jamar unfortunately been out and Rivers been fit:

Out: Jamar (inj), Bate, Grimes (inj), Trengove (Susp), Warnock
In: Martin, Newton, Macdonald, Bennell, Rivers

Warnock is unlucky, but Rivers was in handy form and takes Warnock's spot if fit. He wasn't bad, but he wasn't great either. Bate also a bit stiff, but we need to free up a spot for a back up ruck (more so than Dunn). To have Martin and Newton both in will at least let us rotate them through the ruck. Playing either of them one out against Goldstein is a recipe for disaster. Campbell and Gawn should play VFL seniors but neither are ready to come in yet.

Macdonald and Bennell seem the logical inclusions for Grimes and Trengove. I was tempted to go with Evans ahead of Bennell but it seems Bennell did enough in the VFL to get his spot back. Jetta for his talent in playing inside mid might be another option.

FB: Macdonald Rivers Garland
HB: Tapscott Frawley Davey
C: Jones Moloney Green
HF: Dunn Watts Maric
FF: Petterd Jurrah Wonaeamirri

Fair enough. I don't know enough about Martin to comment but I have seen Melbourne types about the place being pleasantly surprised by him this season when he's had a hitout.

One thing that is obvious is the massively increased importance of ruckmen in the new sub rule environment. As I said, we'd have beaten West Coast if we had even Petrie, who is not a full time ruck but big and fit enough to go all day in the side.

Harsh luck on Jamar. Hope it is still a good game but the runes are favouring us you'd have to think and by Christ we need the win.

That said, I'm hardly confident. Jurrah has the capacity to win it off his own boot, Watts gets better with every game and you still have a decent enough onball unit even with Trengove being out.

Question: who will take Thomas. He's due to have a big one (where he kicks straight). Who would Grimes - a genuine young gun - have taken do you reckon?

I suspect Sammy Wright. Wright can hurt teams badly by popping up for a few goals but can also be ruthlessly exploited by his opponent running off him or even just finding space and using the ball well to set up attacks, which is what Grimes does for you guys.

Absolutely he might. But it could be a risk worth taking. I highly doubt he will be chosen as he missed last weekend due to concussion. But now could be as good a time as any to try him on a back flank or a wing. Speed is his asset, and we could go down that path as Bennell will come in(pace to burn) and Nicholson(pace to burn) could be elevated now there is a spot open on the senior list. Blease is slight, but hey, so is Brent Harvey and he's been a champion for over a decade!

I feel we now have nothing to lose with our losses this week. We haven't beaten you guys the last 8 times we have played, and we literally play Etihad stadium like it is on the other side of the country. I'd like to see Bailey try something different, and I feel we can exploit the Kangas with pace, so why not go down that path? Having said that, I think Bailey will go conservative and bring in Bennell(as the sub), Morton and Martin.

Gawn played in the VFL reserves last week, as did Campbell. For either of them to jump straight into the AFL squad would be pretty amazing, and highly unlikely...

Actually Boomer is very short but he's not slight in the same way Blease is. he's actually quite a nuggety little bugger (although not as much when was Blease's age.)

But your point is entirely valid. We brought Sam Wright in during 2009 when he was very light and he responded quite well ands only lost his sport due to injury.

The beating us with speed argument is an interesting one. With the addition of Atley, Speight and Harper this season, we're not actually that slow, especially given Ziebell usually contests a centre bounce or other stoppage then head forward.

I think if we go tall to try and exploit you there and you respond by going with pace, we'd have the advantage. As Captain Blood used to say, little blokes get tired but big blokes don't get any shorter.

That said, I'm by no means ticking this one off. Not by any stretch.

Out: Jamar, Grimes, Trengove
In: Martin, Bennell, Evans

Martin to ruck all day with Jurrah and Watts doing some third man up in the forward line. Maybe he goes old school and sets up a kick behind the play. Dunn can do the ruck work forward of centre.

Not going to be good anyway you look at it. Bennell could have done with another week or two in the reserves.

Martin gives a great option around the ground and as a competitor in the ruck, as a first ruck I don't think he will be effective

I agree that Grimes would have gone to Wright, now that he is out, look for Tapscott on him and being used as a re bounder

Bartram will go to Thomas, if that fails Frawley. But Bartram is without a doubt our best small defender and should accordingly go on your best small forward (unless he is used in a tagging role)

Strauss isn't on the injury list so he may get a game on the wing or off the HB line but i'm not sure if he was over the concussion he received at training

The stars seemed to have lined up nicely for you boys this week

Going to hurt bad losing 3 top 10 players...

Out: Grimes, Jamar, Trengove, Bate
In: MacDonald, Martin, Bennell, Newton / Gawn

Martin can't do it all on his own, one of Newton or Gawn also need to come in and help out... I believe it will be Newton... Will Riv be back? Given the nature of the North fwd line, I'd almost prefer Warnock's strength...
